    11General information

The following Technical Terms of Delivery contain essential information and stipulate the technical

and commercial processing of customer orders for the colofer® product of voestalpine Stahl GmbH.

Compliance with these terms is a prerequisite to the granting of guarantees. For this reason it is

imperative that customers read through these terms carefully. The most recent version of these terms

applies as published on the voestalpine homepage.

Organic-coated colofer® strip is a composite material that consists of a metallic substrate material

and an organic paint coating. colofer® combines the extraordinary properties of both materials, such

as decorative appearance, corrosion resistance, forming properties and strength. Depending on the

specific requirements, substrate materials can be delivered with various types of organic coatings.

    Manufacturing process

The strip entering the strip coating mill is cleaned in a continuous process, chemically pretreated in

an environmentally friendly manner (without chromates) and is coated with baked paint either on

one or both sides, depending on the requirements of the customer. A removable protective film can

be applied to the baked paint surface on the top side.

    Substrates

Selection may be made from among the following substrate materials:

p Cold-rolled steel strip (only upon request)

    p Hot-dip galvanized steel strip

p Hot-dip galvanized steel strip corrender coated (with zinc-magnesium layer)

p Electrolytically galvanized steel strip (only upon request)

The mechanical and technological properties of the desired steel grade, the manufacturable

dimensions (limit curves) and the deliverable zinc coatings are found in the Product Configurator.

It is important to note that the mechanical and technological properties of the base material can

fluctuate as a result of strip coating processes.

    Organic coating

The functional properties of colofer®, such as adhesion, formability, hardness, resistance to weather

conditions, corrosion resistance, temperature stress, foamability, etc., must be taken into account

during processing and use. colofer® is available in several different color shades, degrees of gloss

    and surface qualities.

    Standards

The European Norms EN 10169 and EN 13523 apply in full to these Technical Terms of Delivery.

Other international recommendations, such as the European Coil Coating Association (ECCA) in

Brussels and the National Coil Coaters Association (NCCA) in Philadelphia, USA, may apply upon

    request.

    11Detailed information

    Coating systems

Coating functions and appearance preferences depend on the application, type of processing and

place of application. Our coating systems have been optimized according to application in order to

most effectively meet the respective requirements. A grouping according to property profiles addi-

tionally simplifies selection of a coating that optimally corresponds to customer requirements. The

following table provides an overview of the three groups of colofer® products.

    High End

High-quality coatings with diverse exceptional properties and highest

    demands on function and design

Special care must be taken when selecting a suitable coating system because the colofer® range of

products is optimized based on specific applications. The following factors are of special significance

with respect to the selection of outdoor products:

    p Specific application

    p Geographical and local conditions

    p Influences on color

A dry environment without any chemical or bacterial stress is assumed for coating materials used for

indoor applications. A coating expert should be consulted in cases of deviating conditions.

    Specific application

It is important to know the exact conditions of the application in order to select the proper coating

system. You will find a small amount of important information in the inquiry checklist features in the

chapter named Inquiry and order process. Please note that certain criteria must be met before colofer®

reverse is used in any application. Special requirements (foamability, adhesiveness, corrosion resistance,

    etc.) must be indicated.

    Geographical and local conditions

The geographical location and local conditions (industrial atmosphere, urban or rural environments)

also have an effect on coatings and must be taken into consideration when selecting a suitable product.

Table 1 below provides information on recommended RC and RUV classes and provides helpful infor-

mation to be used in selecting a suitable coating system.

The UV exposure of coatings increases with the elevation above sea level of the structure. The above

mentioned recommendations are for elevations of up to 900 meters above sea level. A coating expert

should be consulted in cases of higher elevations.

Influence of color on selection of coating system

Certain durability criteria must be met and the use of some paint materials is restricted by particular

applications. This means that not all colors can be used in every outdoor application. Table 7 in the

Appendix indicates which RAL colors can be used for which RUV classes indicated in the data sheets.

A binding warranty cannot be assumed based on any of the data contained in the table. Deviations

are possible in individual cases. This discrepancy is explained by the differing UV resistance of

various pigments. This stability is counterproductive to the achievability of desired colors. Achievable

RUV classes for each coating can be determined upon request in collaboration with a voestalpine

    coating expert.

Documentation of achievability of desired colors (with reference to the RAL Color Chart 840

commonly used in Europe) is facilitated by Table 8 in the Appendix, in which those color deviations

are listed that are expected for each RAL color on color-coated steel strip. The differences stem from

various pigments that are used in the creation of RAL color charts and paints for color coatings. The

total color difference values indicated in Table 8 are a benchmark value for the colofer® classic 25

coating. Increasing demand for UV resistance, such as that in colofer® uv 25 applications, may lead

to significantly greater divergence from the RAL color chart. For this reason, binding agreements

made between the customer and voestalpine Stahl GmbH with respect to color are always based on

coated samples and are referenced by a system number. New developments or changes to legally

applicable standards (such as prohibited pigments) may also lead to changes in the future and make it

impossible to achieve certain RAL colors.

    Coating system properties in detail

The properties shown below are generally based on requirements stipulated by EN 10169. This also

includes tolerance limits for coating thicknesses, gloss and classification of the coating systems pur-

suant to the RC, RUV and CPI classes. Properties are usually tested in accordance with the accord-

ance with the standard method described in EN 13523. Property details for each colofer® coating and

information on testing methods are found in the respective data sheets. Table 2 summarizes the most

    important coating properties.

    11Permits

Because colofer® is delivered as a steel strip and not as a structural component, and permit

applications are generally submitted for defined components, usually such applications must

be submitted by our customers. voestalpine Stahl GmbH, however, is committed to supporting

customers in submitting applications. colofer® products manufactured in large quantities are

inspected annually by an outside agency with respect to their corrosion protection (pursuant

to DIN 55928-8 or the subsequent standard DIN 55634) and are classified with respect to their

fire behavior in building material classes (in accordance with DIN 4102-1 and EN13501-1). The

achieved corrosion protection classes and assigned building material classes are found in the

respective data sheets. A sufficient number of different samples from the same system is required

for new coating systems to be included in the annual inspection. Testing of systems with respect to

fire behavior was based on requirements for building material class B2 in accordance with

DIN 4102-1 and EN 13501-1. This classification corresponds to regular fire protection and

    resistance.

    11Guarantees

    General provisions

voestalpine Stahl GmbH grants claims to customers independently of legal guarantee claims, without

limitation to such and subject to the following conditions. A guarantee period is granted in the respec-

tive product data sheets and is subject to proper use of the respective colofer® product. Guarantees

take into account the substantial differences in stress between roof and wall applications.

Commencement and duration of the guarantee

Each guarantee period begins on the agreed delivery date of the product. Prolongation of the warranty

obligation of voestalpine Stahl GmbH has no effect on the agreed guarantee period.

    Warranty claims

p Guarantee against rusting: A claim can be exerted when rust holes occur prior to expiry of the

guarantee period listed in the respective product data sheet for the colofer® product delivered by

voestalpine Stahl GmbH. Such a claim is valid when said rust is caused by corrosion in spite of

compliance with guarantee requirements and despite avoidance of guarantee-limiting conditions.

p Adhesion guarantee: A claim can be exerted when more than 5% of the coating of an installed

surface loses adhesiveness prior to expiry of the guarantee period listed in the respective product

data sheet for the colofer® product delivered by voestalpine Stahl GmbH. Such a claim is valid

when adhesion is lost in spite of compliance with guarantee requirements and despite avoidance of

    guarantee-limiting conditions.

p Appearance guarantee: A claim can be exerted when the limit values defined in EN 10169 for color

and gloss deviation are exceeded in spite of compliance with guarantee requirements and despite

avoidance of guarantee-limiting conditions. The surface is inspected in areas carefully cleaned

with conventional cleaning agents. If necessary, inspections are carried out jointly by the customer,

voestalpine Stahl GmbH and the supplier. Claim validity is judged in the case of dispute through a

(laboratory) test of compliance with UV resistance requirements as set forth in EN 10169.

    Conditions of guarantee

voestalpine Stahl GmbH guarantees the quality of colofer® when the following

    guarantee conditions are met:

p The coating selected is suitable to the geographical location with respect to RC and RUV class.

    See Table 1.

p Storage, packaging and transport (including handling) of colofer® is properly carried out exclusively

under dry conditions. The processing conditions (temperature, split geometry, forming radius), as-

sembly and maintenance are adapted to the respective properties of colofer® and comply with the

    recognized industrial standards.

p The respective range of application is indicated by the customer in the order placed with voestalpine

Stahl GmbH, and the applied coating system corresponds to the respective range of application.

p colofer® may not be exposed to any aggressive environment that would accelerate corrosive proc-

esses or that would produce a change in the corrosive resistance of the material (such as atmospheric

chlorine, sulfur and fluorine containing compounds, erosive stress, continuous contact with water,

acidic substances and organic acids, silicons that release acetic acid, smoke, vapors, condensation,

ash, concrete dust or solutions containing the same, organic growth or similar conditions).

p The use of colofer® in coastal regions (< 5 km from the coast) or in elevations higher than 900 meters

is only possible upon special request.

p colofer® must be inspected annually by a specialist for irregularities such as dirt deposits, damage

(such as delamination of the coating layer or commencement of corrosion) or functional inhibitions.

Inspection results are documented. The sheet is cleaned to remove all dirt deposits, and other irregu-

    larities are reported immediately.

p A defect is reported by the customer to voestalpine Stahl GmbH in written form (by registered letter

or e-mail with confirmed receipt) within fourteen days after recognition of the defect. Otherwise all

claims are null and void. The claim includes an exact description of the defect (photograph if pos-

sible), address of the object, affected surface, delivery chain, coil number and order number, relevant

documents (invoice, order confirmation, delivery note) and a detailed listing of the expected costs (in

    compliance with the claim conditions).

p The colofer® material for which a claim has been submitted must have been delivered by

voestalpine Stahl GmbH (indication of coil number required). In the event of doubt, the customer

provides samples of the material in question to voestalpine Stahl GmbH.

    Table 4: Guarantee periods

Content and scope of the guarantee

For the guarantee period indicated in the respective product data sheet and depending on the applica-

tion (roof or wall), voestalpine Stahl GmbH guarantees the colofer® product complies with the proper-

ties indicated in the data sheet and is free of defects in accordance with the guarantee provisions.

p The guarantee applies to areas with undamaged organic coating. Cut edges are covered

    where necessary.

p The guarantee obligation of voestalpine Stahl GmbH includes the entire delivered quantity.

p The guarantee includes neither the bottom side of the sheet nor the overpainted and/or

    surfaces with repair coatings.

p In order to maintain validity of the guarantee, defects occurring within the guarantee period are rem-

edied exclusively by voestalpine Stahl GmbH or an authorized agent by way of repair, overpainting

or replacement delivery of the defective material. The customer reserves the right to a price reduc-

tion in the event of inordinate costs required to remedy the defect. Replaced material is only return-

able as a coil to voestalpine Stahl GmbH. The delivery of replacement material is free of charge to

the extent that the costs do not supersede the invoice value of the claimed material.

p Remedy of the defects is carried out by voestalpine Stahl GmbH at the most economic cost and with-

in an appropriate amount of time, or a third-party company is commissioned by voestalpine Stahl

GmbH to remedy the defect. The agreed guarantee period is not impeded, interrupted or precluded

by remedy of a defect. The remedy of a defect ensures usability of the affected component, however

    11Inquiry and order process

The data-entry form for customer inquiries is used for customer inquiries. This date-entry form is used

for testing and recommendation of the following:

p Technical feasibility with respect to the substrate (steel grade, dimensions, tolerances, etc.)

p Delivery details (coil weights, freight routes, etc…)

p Suitable coating system (assigned a specific system code - SKZ).

In order to be able to assign the correct system code, it is important to know the exact application

parameters. This information is necessary for the issue of guarantees. All coating requirements are

documented in the data-entry form. This especially applies to new colors are requested for otherwise

known delivery specifications or known material approved for the customer is processed in a new or

different production line or is changed into a new component or product.

The use of colofer® material for applications not included or recommended in the respective data sheet

is directly requested in the data-entry form.

    Information for ordering colofer®

    Initial orders

The technical feasibility must first be determined before an initial order is placed. The system code

and color tone must also be specifically determined. An initial order may not be placed until the

color has been approved and documented. The following information is provided after approval has

been given based on existing deliveries and recurring delivery items. Some of this information will

depend on whether it is an initial (i) or subsequent order (s).

    11Available dimensions

colofer® is available in the following dimensions and coil diameters:

p Standard thicknesses range from 0.45 mm to 2 mm. Thicknesses below 0.45 mm and above 2.00 mm

    may be available upon request

p Standard widths range from 900 mm to 1,600 mm. Widths below 900 mm and above 1,600 mm may

    be available upon request

p Standard inner diameter is 600 mm. An inner diameter of 500 mm is available upon request.

The desired coating system may limit the coil size. The ordered thickness and respective tolerances

always refer to the substrate material without consideration of the organic coating.

Substrate production capacities are found in the Product Configurator.

    Order units

The minimum order quantity per production unit is one coil production unit (20-21 kg/mm) or a

multiple thereof. The coil weight, particularly when the requirement is no weld seam, can be only one

production unit or a divisible unit thereof. Our Product Configurator will provide you with the optimum

order unit. Coil weight requirements (minimum/maximum) with respect to the order quantity, outer

diameter or desired coil weight must show a minimum difference of 2 kg/mm strip width. The attempt

will be to fulfill customer requests with regard to maximum coil weight; however, the actual weight

may fall below the requested weight by 30%. For technical reasons we reserve the right to overdeliver

or underdeliver materials depending on ordered quantities:

    order quantity order quantity deviation

    < 1 rolling unit (< 18 t) ........................................................................................u.r.

    1 rolling unit (18 t to 32 t) ....................................................................... up to 20%

    2 rolling units and above (> 32 t) ............................................................ up to 10%

    Tolerances

Our Product Configurator will provide you with the reference standards and standard tolerances.

Possible deviations of tolerances from the standard are available upon request.

    Protective film

As an optional service, most colofer® materials can be ordered with a protective film that protects the

surface of the product during transport, storage and processing at the customer until the product is in-

stalled. Film possibilities are dependent on the selected coating system. Basically there are two possi-

ble types of protective films for colofer® thicknesses from 0.50 to 1.50 mm and in widths up to 1500 mm

maximum. The material is delivered with a hot-laminated protective film made of polyethylene and

with a thickness of approximately 120 µm. The standard is a full-cover film up to 5 mm from both edg-

es. The width of uncovered material at the edges can be widened upon request. The maximum weight

of coils covered with a protective film is 16 tons. colofer® is also available with thinner self-adhesive

film upon request from voestalpine Stahl Service Center GmbH.

The thicker hot-laminated protective film is preferred in places where a higher level of protection is

required. This film has the advantage that no adhesive remains on the coated surface during UV stress

after the protective film has been removed. The paint must be adjusted for the application of protective

film, and unfortunately this is not possible for all coating systems.

Self-adhesive protective coatings are usually thinner and can be used in a broader spectrum of coating

    systems.

In both cases, however, the entire coating layer structure and film must be adjusted to meet specific

customer requirements. Environmental conditions such as temperature and UV stress, etc., influence

the adhesiveness of the protective film. For this reason, colofer® products must be processed/installed

within six months following the designated delivery date. The protective film is to be removed within

    this time frame.

    Labeling

As a standard rule, only one tag is attached to each packing unit and indicates the following:

Clarification of special requirements or other packing types available upon request.

    Transport

A crane with a coil tong, a C hook or a stacker equipped with either a mandrel or a fork are permit-

ted as means of transport. Load-handling attachments are adjusted to the inner diameter of the coil.

Chains, ropes and belts are not permitted as slinging equipment. All load securing devices are subject

to compliance with applicable technical safety regulations. Coil damage caused by fastening devices

and/or relative movement of the coil during transport must be avoided (VDI Guideline 2700 to 2702).

    Storage

colofer® material must be protected from damage, impurities, moisture (rain, splashing, groundwater

and condensation) during storage and transportation. The base layer must be made of plastic, steel or

wood. Steel supports must be clad with rubber or plastic. The design of the support base must corre-

spond to the coil geometry. Coils must not be stacked unless damage (indentations) to the material is

    excluded without any doubt.

Protective films do not provide sufficient protection against moisture and dampness and are only

intended to protect the painted surface against mechanical damage during processing, storage and

transport. Protective films made of polyethylene do not provide any resistance to water diffusion.

colofer® material, even when covered with a protective film, must not be exposed to moisture. The

protective film must be immediately removed from any coil that comes into contact with moisture so

the coil can dry and be processed as quickly as possible.

    11Processing of claims and complaints

p In order to ensure their validity, claims must be submitted within five days after the subject of the claim

    is discovered

Apparent transport damage is noted directly on the shipping note at the time the material is accepted

during unloading. This damage is also immediately reported to the contact person in sales.

If an immediate response is required by voestalpine Stahl GmbH (danger of delay, necessity of

immediate commercial decision or approval), it will be additionally necessary to establish telephone

contact. As a general rule, voestalpine Stahl GmbH must be given the opportunity to repair the

material or make a replacement delivery without incurring any sequential costs. All measures to be

taken are also to be coordinated with voestalpine Stahl GmbH.

Precise documentation of the case of damage will include a description of the defect, photographs

or samples and is required for technical processing of the claim. Technical processing includes

risk analysis, investigation of cause, definition of suitable remedial measures and of course either

technical recognition or technical rejection of the claim.

The following claim form indicates which information must be submitted. At least the following

    information must be provided:

    p Customer, recipient

p Affected coil number, respective rolling order number (delivery note/coil sticker)

p Weight or surface area of affected material (canceled coils, stock list)

    p Level of urgency

p Customer request (amount of damage, replacement delivery, reimbursement of additional costs,

    depreciation, action plan, etc.)

    p Description of the problem

p Translated original customer letter of claim

p Contact person at the customer, telephone number

voestalpine Stahl GmbH uses adequate cause analysis methods and determines the cost as they

relate to the claims to damages. Should the customer request that more expensive methods be used,

voestalpine Stahl GmbH reserves the right to invoice the customer for additional analysis expenses to

the extent the result of the analysis confirms that voestalpine Stahl GmbH is not accountable.

voestalpine Stahl GmbH reserves the right to inspect the claimed damages on site and to employ the

services of an insurer. In the event that the insurer deems it necessary to have the damage inspected by

a technical expert, this inspection must be granted. The processing time will be extended whenever it

becomes necessary to employ the services of the voestalpine product liability insurance agency. Remedy

measures must not be undertaken without prior approval by the insurer until the material inspection has

    been completed.
