INTRODUCTION This report covers a 21 days guided trip to Colombia by Gilles DELFORGE, Benoît FORGET, Frédéric VANHOVE and Gilles WILLEM, all from Brussels, BELGIUM. We all had previous experiences with Neotropical birding in Ecuador (all of us) and Venezuela, Panama, Costa Rica or Peru for some of us. Our target was to see as many endemics or near-endemics as possible. We recorded 644 species (24 heard-only) of wich 41 endemics (growing to 52 if following a more progressive taxonomy!) and many threatened or restricted range species. All in all it was a very successful trip, with no logistical problems and fantastic birding! ITINERARY

Overview

With only 20,5 days of birding, and endemics spread all over the country, we had to make some choices, as it was impossible to do Santa Marta, the Western, Central and Eastern Andes in a single trip. With around 20 endemics, the Santa Marta Mountains were our n° 1 target. The choice between Eastern Andes and Magdalena valley on one side, and the Western Andes on the other side was a tougher one. We finally opted for the Western Andes, the Choco birding and Yellow-eared Parrot making the difference! Finally we had, in total (geographical, not chronological order) 1 day in the Eastern Andes (½ day Laguna Pedropalo, ½ day Guasca) 1 day Magdalena valley (1 day Mana Dulce) 6 days Central Andes (1 day Juntas, 1h Navarco, 1 day Otun Quimbaya, 1 day Rio Blanco, ½ day Nevado del Ruiz, 2,5 days Anori) 5 days Western Andes (2, 5 days Pueblo Rico (Montezuma road), 0,5 day Jardin, 1,5 day Urrao) 5 days Santa Marta and Guajira ( 0,5 day Minca, 2 days Cuchilla San Lorenzo, 0,5 day Camarones, 2h Isla de Salamanca).

In retrospect, it was a really good itinerary. In comparison with the rest of our itinerary, the stay at Anori was quite long, but it was not a problem. One alternative could have been to leave from Anori 1 day earlier for Santa Marta, and have 1 more day around Bogota, for Cundinamarca Antpitta for example. A 4 weeks trip will probably add: Lago Fuquene or La Florida (for Apolinar’s Wren); Soata (for Chestnut-bellied Hummingbird, Niceforo’s Wren, Mountain Grackle); the Cerulean Warbler reserve (for Gorgeted Wood-Quail, Upper Magdalena Tapaculo, Recurve-billed Bushbird and Turquoise Dacnis); El Paujil (for Blue-billed Curassow, Beautiful Woodpecker, Sooty Ant-Tanager, Antioquia Bristle-Tyrant, Northern Screamer,…); Chinganza NP (for Brown-breasted Parakeet); Monterredondo (for Cundinamarca Antpitta).

PRACTICALITIES Flights We flew from Brussels to Bogotá via Madrid with IBERIA for 1143 €. We took also 2 locals flights while in Colombia (booked by Trogon Trips):

- between Medellin and Santa Marta with AVIANCA (via Bogotá because there was no direct flight in the late afternoon);

- between Baranquilla and Bogotá with AIRES. Both flights were relatively cheap (around 100.000 COP or 40 €) and efficient ( both companies let us take an earlier flight while at the airport with no surcharge). Money Colombia’s official currency is the Colombian Pesos (COP). At the time of our trip, the mid-market rate was 2375 COP to 1 € and 1870 COP to 1 $. ATM’s are readily available in most cities and accept Maestro and Visa cards. Debits limit vary from 300.000 to 720.000 COP per debit (you can debit the maximum amount at least 2 times in a row on a single day, we didn’t try more). Highest limit was DAVIDIENDA. You can also change $ or € at exchange bureaus, but exchanges rates were poor, particularly for €, so we only used ATM’s. Tour services Despite previous experiences of self-organized and self-driven trips in South America ( and our preference for self-guided trips), we decided to opt for a guided trip, for 2 mains reasons: our tight schedule ( 20,5 days in Colombia) and the difficulties of access of many sites, making a self-driven trip quite difficult. We contacted 3 companies: Trogon Trips http://home.scarlet.be/~tse98017/index.html Ecoturs http://www.ecoturs.org/ Colombia Birding http://www.colombiabirding.com/ Our demand was:

- 3 weeks itinerary including Santa Marta mountains and endemics rich areas ( we had a rough proposed itinerary);

- a local guide;

- a “budget” trip ( so were “open-minded” concerning accommodation and public transport);

- No other clients in the group (being a group of friends and hardcore birders, + have you ever try to see an antpitta or tapaculo with a group of 10?).

All of them responded, but we rapidly choose for Trogon Trips, wich seemed the most able to fulfill our needs, and also the cheaper. Jurgen Beckers ( Trogon Trips) proposed us a formula wich consisted in a daily fee paid in advance for guiding and organization of the trip, and we paid the accommodations, transport and food during the trip ( with the exception of the local flights and some accommodations wich had to be booked well in advance, like in the PROAVES reserves). It has the advantage of being cheaper than their all-in rate, and also more flexible. It worked perfectly. The total cost of the trip p.p (excluding international flights) was 2400 $. Guides We had Pablo Florez Valencia [paflorez13@hotmail.com] as a guide for the first 2 weeks (from Bogotá to Anori) and Walberto Naranja for the Santa Marta – Caribbean part of the trip. Pablo is in his mid-30th ( like us) and was very good company. Pablo is a good birdwatcher, but, more importantly, knows where to find the birds, is very good in planning the logistic (we never had any delay or accommodation problem) and is always enthusiast (despite the fact that we never wanted to stop birdwatching !). Walberto also knows where to find the birds, and is a safe driver ( but is sometimes less safe in terms of identification !) He was also good company. Both of them have MP3 player with most of the target species. Pablo has also recording material. Pablo was carrying a small scope of low quality, but we nearly never used it. Accommodations The price range of the accommodation varied between 10 $ pp without breakfast (for ex hotel La Casona in Jardin ) and 55 $ pp with 3 meals ( the Proaves reserves accommodations). A few of them were booked in advance by Jurgen Beckers ( first and last night in Bogota, the night in Santa Marta, the Proaves reserves accommodations and the San Lorenzo research station). The other accommodations were booked a few days in advance by Pablo. It’s advisable to book the accommodations in the Proaves reserves and Cuchilla San Lorenzo well in advance, as there are few places available and more and more birdwatchers visiting them. Bogota: Platypus hostal http://www.platypusbogota.com/ Mana Dulce: Mana Dulce ecoturismo cabins http://www.manadulceecoturismo.com/ Juntas: hotel in Juntas (I don’t remember the name but it’s the only one !). It was much better than sleeping in Ibague, avoiding 1 h on a bad road each way. Pueblo Rico: Finca Montezuma. Quite basic but very friendly. Rio Blanco : reserve accommodation http://www.fundegar.com/ Jardin: hotel la Casona Urrao: hotel in Urrao (I don’t remember the name). There were 2-3 differents hotels, this was de second we tried. Urrao Colibri del Sol reserve: reserve accommodation Chestnut-capped Piha reserve: reserve accommodation Santa Marta: Aluna hotel http://alunahotel.com/ Cuchilla San Lorenzo: Cuchilla San Lorenzo research station Minca: Sans Soucis hostal. Quite rundown, disappointing. Rioacha: hotel (I don’t remember the name) but there are quite a few possibilities. It was the third hotel we tried, the others were full. Transports Colombia is a huge country, and the distance between sites is sometimes important. We used a mix of private transport (most of the time) and public transport. As in most of South America, public transport is quite efficient, with all type of transport available at bus stations (from classic bus with conventional schedules to 6 seats mini-bus that depart as soon as they are full). Transport isn’t cheap in Colombia, as the petrol prices are much higher than in other countries (Venezuela or Ecuador for example). Expect to pay around 300.000 COP a day for a six-seater van + driver. Whe took sometimes as many as 4 differents transports types in a day, never waiting more than 15 min between them, thanks to the efficiency of Pablo. We used private transport with driver for the first 2,5 days ( six-seaters van) between Bogotá and Armenia, for 4 days between Rio Blanco and Anori ( 4x4 Isuzu Trooper) and for our 5 days around Santa Marta (4x4 Toyota Land Cruiser driven by our guide Walberto). The rest of the time we used public transport ( bus, microbus, local 4x4). Note that a 4x4 is mandatory to access quite a few sites (sometimes a high clearance one): Pueblo Rico, Rio Blanco, the reserve above Jardin, the reserve above Urrao, Anori (when raining at least ) and Cuchilla San Lorenzo ! Equipment We took only 1 telescope for the 4 of us, but used it only at Camarones wetlands and for the rest never took it in the field ! Despite the fact that our guides had MP3 players, we took 3 I-pod + radioshack. It proved useful when searching for different species at the same time. It was also important to have so many, because some of our cables and radioshack died because of the humidity ! Rubber boots were mandatory only at Urrao.

Food and drinks Meals were generally fine and inexpensive ( between 10.000 and 20.000 COP) and generally consisted first of a soup, then meat with rice, plantain and beans or lentils. Bottled water was readily available, but we drank also boiled water at some places. Excellent fresh fruit juice was served with every meal. Beer was also available at most places. Hygiene was good as we had no stomach problems ! Weather July is normally a drier period in many areas of the country, but during our visit, Colombia experienced much rainier weather than usual due to La Nina phenomenon, with floodings in some regions etc. Despite that, we were very lucky with the weather, with showers nearly every day, but very little birding time lost because of the rain (probably 2-3 hours in total). The generally overcast conditions were also probably better for birdwatching. Electricity Electricity in Colombia is 110 Volts, 60 cycles alternating current, using American-styled two-flat plugs. Safety Despite the very bad reputation of Colombia, this was a non-issue. We always felt save everywhere we went (even more than in other south-american countries) and met only friendly people. Police or army check-points are numerous everywhere, but we where stopped only 3 times, and always with courteous manners. Anyway, as the security issues can change quickly, it’s probably wiser to seek local advice before traveling.

REFERENCES Books Hilty & Brown, Birds of Colombia, Princeton University Press (1986) Mata, Erize & Rumboll, A field guide to the birds of South America (non-passerines), Collins (2006) Restall, Rodner & Lentino, Birds of Northern South America an identification guide, volume 2, Helm (2006) Ridgely & Tudor, Birds of South America (passerines), Helm (2009) As we were 4, we took the 4 books. All have advantages and inconvenients. Hilty & Brown has the most detailed text and maps, and most of the plates (those painted by Tudor at least) are very good (but not as good as in Ridgely & Tudor). However, quite a few species are not depicted on the plates (with no indication of that in the text facing the plates !) and quite a few species are not covered at all because

discovered after the publication of the book (for example Parker’s Antbird, Chestnut-capped Piha, Tapaculos, Cundinamarca Antpitta, etc). Conclusion: very frustrating to use in the field ! Mata, Erize & Lentino and Ridgely & Tudor have the advantage of being up to date, with good (Mata) to very good (Ridgely and Tudor) plates, but as they cover all of South America, it’s sometimes difficult to find his way between the thousands of species ! Also, Ridgely & Tudor don’t depict all species, but it’s not really a problem as you have references about that in the text facing the plates. Restall, Rodner & Lentino is also up to date, and less overwhelming than Mata and Ridgely, covering only northern South America. It has also the advantage of illustrating all species, and most of the subspecies. However, the plates are of poor quality, and can be confusing for difficult groups (Tyrannulets, Flycachers, etc). Despite this very important plates problem, we mostly took Restall in the field, using Ridgely (more rarely Mata) for the most difficult identifications. We nearly never used Hilty. Note that there is now a new field guide published for Colombia (we saw one of the first out off the press while in Santa Marta): McMullan, Donegan & Quevedo, Field Guide to the Birds of Colombia, 2010. It depict all the birds of Colombia ( and is of course up to date) , in a very compact pocket format. The plates are of a better quality than Restall, but not of the same level as Mata or Ridgely. Because of the format, the text is minimal ( within the plates). The maps look precise and up to date. It looks like the perfect book to carry in the field, but it’s probably safer to have Restall and/or Mata and Ridgely in the car or in the hotel room ! With a few exceptions, the “specialties” covers only the endemics or range-restricted species found at each sites. For a complete view, see the trip list at the end of this report. Juntas (3h30 min drive from Mana Dulce) Subtropical forest patches between 2000 and 2600 m alt in the Central Andes. Time invested: 1 afternoon + 1 early morning. Specialties seen: Blossomcrown (E), Yellow-headed Brush-Finch (E), Indigo-capped Hummingbird, Golden-faced Redstart Specialties not seen: Tolima Dove (E) Navarco (2h drive from Juntas) Temperate forest between 3000 – 3200 m alt.

Time invested: 1 hour (midday) Specialties seen: Golden-faced Redstart Specialties not seen: Indigo-winged Parrot (E) Pueblo Rico (Montezuma road) (5h 30 min drive from Navarco) Very good subtropical forest between 1500 and 1900 m alt in the Western Andes, 45 min drive from Pueblo Rico (Risaralda) in Tatama NP. Also a few pastures around accommodation. Most people seem to go to El Cairo (more to the south) for Western Andes birding. The only difference between the 2 sites is that Fulvous-dotted Treerunner and Indigo Flowerpiercer are easier at El Cairo (but we saw the Treerunner in Pueblo Rico and we saw the Flowerpiercer at Anori). The advantage of Pueblo Rico (but I’ve never been to El Cairo) is that you can bird directly from the accommodation (wich is basic) along a well maintained footpath. In El Cairo, the birding area is apparently 1 hour drive from the hotel, and you also bird along the road. There’s also the brand new Las Tangaras Proaves reserve, but I didn’t find much information about access to this place before our trip (Choco Vireo seems easier there). Anyway, Pueblo Rico was a fantastic place, and despite basic, this was the friendlier place we stayed in, with the best food! Time invested: 2 days + 1 early morning. Specialties seen: Chestnut Wood-Quail (E), Parker’s Antbird (E), Alto Pisones Tapaculo (E), Munchique Wood-Wren (E), Crested Ant-Tanager (E), Black-and-gold Tanager (E), Gold-ringed Tanager (E), Empress Brilliant,Velvet-purple Coronet, Toucan Barbet, Fulvous-dotted Treerunner, Uniform Treehunter, Bar-crested Antshrike, Bicolored Antvireo, Yellow-breasted Antpitta (HO), Narino Tapaculo, Orange-breasted Fruiteater, Club-winged Manakin (HO), Beautiful Jay, Black Solitaire, Black-chinned Mountain-Tanager, Purplish-mantled Tanager, Glistening-green Tanager, Tanager Finch, Yellow-collared Chlorophonia. Specialties not seen: Choco Vireo, Scarlet-and-white Tanager, Indigo Flowerpiercer Otun Quimbaya ( 4h 30 min drive from Pueblo Rico) Good subtropical forest (with some introduced trees) between 1700 and 2800 m in the Central Andes, 45 min drive from Pereira. We birded between 1800-1900 m only (where most of the specialties are) along the road to El Cedral ( very little traffic). Time invested: 1 afternoon + 1 morning. Specialties seen: Cauca Guan (E), Chestnut Wood-Quail (E) HO, Stile’s Tapaculo (E), Crested Ant-Tanager (E), Multicolored Tanager (E), Colombian Screech-Owl, Moustached Antpitta, Red-ruffed Fruitcrow, Chestnut-breasted Wren, Rufous-naped Greenlet. Rio Blanco (3h drive from Otun Quimbaya) Nice subtropical forest between 2200-3000 m alt in the Central Andes, 30 min drive from the city of Manizales. We birded from the accommodation (2300 m) to a few kms higher (2500 m). Time invested: 1 late afternoon + 1 full day. Specialties seen: Chestnut Wood-Quail (E) HO, Brown-banded Antpitta (E), White-throated Screech-Owl, Black-billed Mountain-Toucan, Bicolored Antpitta, Black-collared Jay, Masked Saltator, Golden-faced Redstart. Specialties not seen: Rusty-faced Parrot. Note that Rufous-fronted Parakeet (E) is possible a few hours walking from the accommodation, much higher. We didn’t try (Nevado del Ruiz is much more accessible by car). Nevado del Ruiz (Las Letras) (2h drive from Rio Blanco) Temperate forest and paramo between 3000m -4200 m alt in the Central Andes, 1,5 h drive from Manizales. Time invested: 1 morning. Specialties seen: Rufous-fronted Parakeet (E), Bearded Helmetcrest, Rainbow-bearded Thornbill, Black-thighed Puffleg, Crescent-faced Antpitta (first observation for the area !) Specialties not seen: Black-backed Bush-Tanager. Jardin (Loro Orejiamarillo bird reserve) (5h30 min drive from Nevado del Ruiz)

Forest and pastures between 2400 – 3000 m alt in the Western Andes, 3 hours drive from Medellin. Note that the reserve is 45 min drive from the town of Jardin (4x4 needed). Time invested: 1 morning (our only real target was Yellow-eared Parrot). Specialties seen: Yellow-eared Parrot (E), Red-bellied Grackle (E). Specialties not seen: Munchique Wood-Wren (E), Tanager Finch, Chestnut-crested Cotinga. Urrao (Colibri del Sol) (6 h drive from Jardin) Pastures, temperate forest and paramo between 2600 – 3600 m alt in the Western Andes, 5 hours drive from Medellin. The start of the trail to the reserve is 40 min drive from Urrao (4x4 needed). It’s 1h 45min walk from the start of the trail to the accommodation (the antpitta feeding area is nearby) and the same time to go from the accommodation up to the paramo. Time invested: 1 full day + 1 early morning. Specialties seen: Dusky Starfrontlet (E), Urrao Antpitta (E), Paramillo Tapaculo (E), Chestnut-bellied Flowerpiercer (E), Noble Snipe, Rusty-faced Parrot, Black-throated Flowerpiercer, Golden-faced Redstart.

Specialties not seen: - Anori (Chestnut-capped Piha reserve) (7h drive from Urrao) Pastures and forest at 1400 - 1800 m alt at northern end of Central Andes. Time invested: 2 full days + 1 early morning. Specialties seen: Chestnut Wood-Quail (E) HO, White-mantled Barbet (E), Parker’s Antbird (E), Stile’s Tapaculo (E), Chestnut-capped Piha (E), Black-and-gold Tanager (E), Red-bellied Grackle (E), Blue-fronted Parrotlet, Bar-crested Antshrike, Rufous-naped Greenlet, Purplish-mantled Tanager, Indigo Flowerpiercer. Specialties not seen: Multicolored Tanager (E), Black Tinamou, Cinnamon Screech-Owl. Minca (45 min drive from Santa Marta) Secondary forest patches between 600-800 m around the town of Minca, at base of Cuchilla San Lorenzo, Santa Marta mountains. Time invested: 2 early mornings. Specialties seen: Santa-Marta Foliage-Gleaner (E), Black-backed Antshrike, Rosy Thrush-Tanager, Golden-winged Sparrow. Specialties not seen: Santa Marta Sabrewing (E) (?), Military Macaw, Scaled Piculet, Venezuelan Tyrannulet, Black-billed Flycatcher, Royal Flycatcher. Cuchilla San Lorenzo Forest patches and forest from 1000 m to 2700 m alt, from above Minca to above San Lorenzo research station (El Dorado lodge lies between, closer to the research station) in the Santa Marta mountains. Time invested: 1 afternoon + 2 full days. Specialties seen: Santa Marta Parakeet (E), Santa Marta Screech-Owl (E), White-tailed Starfrontlet (E), Black-backed Thornbill (E), Santa Marta Woodstar (E), Rusty-headed Spinetail (E), Streak-capped Spinetail (E), Santa Marta Antpitta (E), Santa Marta Tapaculo (E), Santa Marta Bush-Tyrant (E), Yellow-crowned Redstart (E), White-lored Warbler (E), Santa Marta Warbler (E), Black-cheeked Mountain-Tanager (E), Santa Marta Brush-Finch (E), Black-fronted Wood-Quail (HO), Coppery Emerald, White-tipped Quetzal, Brown-rumped Tapaculo. Specialties not seen: Blossomcrown (E), Fulvous-headed Tanager. Camarones (Los Flamencos sanctuary) Dry forest and coastal wetlands, 10 km south of Rioacha (Guajira). Time invested: 1 late afternoon + 1 morning. Specialties seen: Rufous-vented Chachalaca, Bare-eyed Pigeon, Buffy Hummingbird, Russet-throated Puffbird, Chestnut Piculet, White-whiskered Spinetail, Slender-billed Tyrannulet (Inezia), Orinocan Saltator, Tocuyo Sparrow, Vermilion Cardinal. Specialties not seen: -

Isla de Salamanca NP (1 h drive from Santa Marta)

Mangroves, coastal scrub and coastal lagoons on the Caribbean coast. Time invested: 2 hours. Specialties seen: Bare-eyed Pigeon, Russet-throated Puffbird Specialties not seen: Chestnut-winged Chachalaca (E), Sapphire-bellied Hummingbird (E), Chestnut Piculet Chingaza NP access road (45 min drive from Bogotá)

Temperate forest – Paramo, 3000 – 3600 m alt in the Eastern Andes. Time invested: 2 hours. Specialties seen: Silvery-throated Spinetail (E), Golden-bellied Starfrontlet, Coppery-bellied Puffleg, Matorral Tapaculo (HO), Rufous-browed Conebill. Specialties not seen: Brown-breasted Parakeet (E), Blue-throated Starfrontlet, Bronze-tailed Thornbill. Guasca (45 min drive from Bogotá)

Small marshy area and pastures. Time invested: 2 hours. Specialties seen: Bogotá Rail (E), Spot-flanked Gallinule, Noble Snipe. Specialties not seen: -

ENDEMICS (seen and not seen) The target of the trip was to see as many new species as possible, particularly endemics and near-endemics. According to the last version of Clements (December 2009), there are 67 endemics in Colombia. A few more were described afterwards or are in the process of being described (Santa Marta Screech-Owl, Urrao Antpitta, Paramillo Tapaculo and Alto Pisones Tapaculo), bringing the total to 71. There’s sadly another recent endemic: Yellow-eared Parrot (now extinct in Ecuador) Of those 72, we had a theoric chance (sometimes very slim) to see 53 on our itinerary. We saw 41 of them. I’ve included in this section short notes on these 53 species (including the ones we missed). Note that a few other species that we saw are frequently presented as endemics in other lists or trip reports (most of these species are in fact near-endemics) for example: Coppery Emerald, Indigo-capped Hummingbird, Brown-rumped Tapaculo, Matorral Tapaculo, Flame-rumped Tanager, Rufous-browed Conebill, Golden-fronted Redstart.

Some more are also split, for example: Speckled Chachalaca ssp colombiana (Colombian Chachalaca), Emerald Toucanet ssp lautus (Santa-Marta Toucanet). In conclusion, a more “open-minded” listing would bring our endemics total to 52! Species not seen are between [ ]. [Chestnut-winged Chachalaca Ortalis garrula] We didn’t had the time to try the site south of Santa Marta airport. We had a slim chance to see it along the road between Santa-Marta and Baranquilla (Isla Salamanca NP), but the birds are probably easier to see early morning or in the evening (we were there in the afternoon). Cauca Guan Penelope perspicax Endangered (EN) Surprisingly common at the classic site, Otun Quimbaya. [Blue-knobbed Curassow Crax Alberti Critically endangered (CR)] We had a very theoric chance to see it in the Santa Marta (in the numerous trip reports, I found only one observation). El Paujil was not on our itinerary. Chestnut Wood-Quail Odontophorus hyperythrus Near-threatened (NT) Surprisingly common… by voice ! Seen by only one of us (GW) at Montezuma road (Pueblo Rico). Heard regularly at Montezuma road (Pueblo Rico), Otun Qimbaya, Rio Blanco, Colibri del Sol reserve (Urrao) and Chestnut-capped Piha reserve (Anori) Bogotá Rail Rallus semiplumbeus Endangered (EN) 5-6 birds seen very well at Guasca (it seems that this site is more reliable than La Florida) [Tolima Dove Leptotila conoveri Endangered (EN)] We had no time to try Clarito Botero near Ibague and tried with no luck around Juntas as we had also to find Blossomcrown (it seems that there are very few observations around Juntas). Santa Marta Parakeet Pyrrhura viridicata Endangered (EN) 2 groups (6 and 7, one of them perched very close) seen on the day we went above San Lorenzo research station, in the radio stations area. This bird is only possible on the highest part of Cuchilla San Lorenzo. [Brown-breasted Parakeet Pyrrhura calliptera Vulnerable (VU)] Our chances were again very theoric, as we had only 2 hours on our last morning at the very beginning of the road to Chinganza. The birds are always seen much higher, in the reserve itself.

Yellow-eared Parrot Ognorhynchus icterotis Critically endangered (CR) 110 + seen in different groups (flight only) in the reserve area above Jardin. There was no reliable roosting place at the moment of our visit. Rufous-fronted Parakeet Bolborhynchus ferrugineifrons Vulnerable (VU) 10 birds seen in flight at Nevado del Ruiz. Another group heard. [Indigo-winged Parrot Hapalopsittaca fuertesi Critically endangered (CR)] Our only chance was to be lucky enough to see a flyby at Navarco, where we stayed only 1 hour. We weren’t. [Santa Marta Sabrewing Campylopterus phainopeplus Endangered (EN)] There was a claim of a female by our guide around Minca, but it was a White-vented Plumeleteer. There a very few reports from Cuchilla San Lorenzo. This bird seems also to stay at higher altitudes in this period of the year. [Sapphire-bellied Hummingbird Lepidopyga lilliae Critically endangered (CR)] Our only chance was at the Coco park headquarter of Isla Salamanca NP, where we stopped for half an hour. There are very few (if any) definite recents observations of this controversial species. Some ongoing researchs would indicate that it is only a plumage variant of Sapphire-throated Hummingbird (Walberto Naranja pers.com.) Blossomcrown Anthocephala floriceps Vulnerable (VU) 1 bird was briefly seen by GD and FV a few kms above the hotel in Juntas. Despite searching for it, not seen in Santa Marta. Black Inca Coeligena prunellei Vulnerable (VU) 3-4 birds were seen at Laguna Pedropalo. White-tailed Starfrontlet Coeligena phalerata A few males and a female were regularly seen at the feeders at El Dorado Lodge. 2 birds also seen above San Lorenzo research station. Dusky Starfrontlet Coeligena orina Critically endangered (CR) 10+ (males and females) seen at feeders 1h30 walking above accomodation at Urrao (Colibri del Sol reserve). Black-backed Thornbill Ramphomicron dorsale 1 female was regularly visiting the feeders at El Dorado Lodge.

Santa Marta Woodstar Chaetocercus astreans Only 1 female seen, around the first antennae, above San Lorenzo research station. White-mantled Barbet Capito hypoleucus Endangered (EN) 4 birds seen in fruiting trees along main road, 1 km down the lodge in Anori. [Grayish Piculet Picumnus granadensi] We tried 2 times at Pablo’s site on the way to Jardin with no luck. Not seen at Otun Quimbaya, were possible on the way down the reserve. Silvery-throated Spinetail Synallaxis subpudica 2 birds seen at Chinganza NP access road. Rusty-headed Spinetail Synallaxis fuscorufa Vulnerable (VU)

A few seen around and above San Lorenzo research station. Streak-capped Spinetail Cranioleuca hellmayri A few seen between Minca and San Lorenzo research station, and also above research station. Santa Marta Foliage-gleaner Automolus rufipectus 2 birds (taped in) seen around Minca. Parker's Antbird Cercomacra parkeri 1 male seen at Montezuma road. A few birds seen every days at Anori. Urrao Antpitta Grallaria fenwickorum 2 birds at feeders on our first morning in Urrao (Colibri del Sol reserve). Santa Marta Antpitta Grallaria bangsi Vulnerable (VU) Regularly heard, and seen 4-5 times above research station and between research station and El Dorado lodge. Brown-banded Antpitta Grallaria milleri Endangered (EN) A few seen at and around feeding areas at Rio Blanco.

Alto Pisones Tapaculo Scytalopus sp.nov This new species (waiting formal description) was seen and heard at middle elevation at Montezuma road. Santa Marta Tapaculo Scytalopus sanctaemartae Heard and seen between Minca and El Dorado lodge Stiles's Tapaculo Scytalopus stilesi Heard and seen at Otun Quimbaya and Anori. Paramillo Tapaculo Scytalopus canus 1 seen and a few heard at Colibri del Sol reserve. [Antioquia Bristle-Tyrant Phylloscartes lanyoni Endangered (EN)] Following the advice of Pablo, we tried (without him) the old road from Anori on our return trip to Medellin, but it seems that all the remnant forest had recently been cut because of the construction of a new dam… Santa Marta Bush-Tyrant Myiotheretes pernix Endangered (EN) 1 couple seen above research station (just before last accessible antennae). Apical Flycatcher Myiarchus apicalis 3 + 1 birds seen at Mana Dulce. Chestnut-capped Piha Lipaugus weberi Endangered (EN) 1 seen at the ridge trail and 1 seen along the main road 1 km above the lodge in Anori. Munchique Wood-Wren Henicorhina negreti Critically endangered (CR) 1 bird taped in and seen at very close range at highest part of Montezuma road. Not tried for at Jardin. [Santa Marta Wren Troglodytes monticola Vulnerable (VU)] Not really a dip as this is the only Santa Marta endemic not occuring on Cuchilla San Lorenzo (wich is too low) Yellow-crowned Redstart Myioborus flavivertex Regularly seen around and above San Lorenzo research station. Black-cheeked Mountain-Tanager Anisognathus melanogenys Regularly seen between El Dorado lodge and San Lorenzo research station, and particularly common above research station. Multicolored Tanager Chlorochrysa nitidissima Vulnerable (VU) 1 female and 1 male in mixed species feeding flocks on 2 dates at Otun Quimabaya. [Turquoise Dacnis Dacnis hartlaubi Vulnerable (VU)] Our only chance was at Laguna Pedropalo on our first morning, where we didn’t find it. Chestnut-bellied Flowerpiercer Diglossa gloriosissima Endangered (EN) 2-3 birds in real paramo at highest point, 2h walking up accommodation at Urrao (Colibri del Sol reserve). Santa Marta Brush-Finch Atlapetes melanocephalus Commonest Santa Marta endemic. Regularly seen between Minca and San Lorenzo research station. Also above research station.

Yellow-headed Brush-Finch Atlapetes flaviceps Endangered (EN) A few birds seen on each day at Juntas. Red-bellied Grackle Hypopyrrhus pyrohypogaster Endangered (EN) Small groups (6-10 birds) seen once between yellow-eared parrot reserve and Jardin and twice at Anori.
