● There is usually homework, if none assigned - time for review
● Don’t just do the work...it counts once you hand it in
● The Student Success Program is available to support students who need assistance, Room 218
● Peer Tutors are available to help in various departments and in the Opportunity Room (OR)
● Link Leaders are here to support the Grade 9 learners

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
● CB is a “BYOD” school
● Students may bring their own tablets/laptops/netbooks to school to support their learning
● The school is not responsible for the security/safe keeping of the device; parents/guardians are encouraged to confirm personal insurance coverage in the event of loss/damage
● Students using personal devices at school are accountable to teachers during instructional time, as well as under the Acceptable Use policy for their conduct online /using Wifi
School Fees● Voluntary student activity fee ($35) includes activities

Reporting Periods / Communication
● Non-semestered school
● Four reporting periods throughout the year: ● First Report Card - November 21, 2019
● Second Report Card – February 5, 2020
● Term 3 Marks Update – April 16, 2020
● Final Report Card – Early July 2020 (mailed home)
● Parent-Teacher Interviews (November 28 & February 13)
● Parents/Guardians should contact teachers with questions regarding student progress at any time
Assessment and Evaluation● Course Outlines and Assessment Plans
● Student Evidence Records can be requested of teachers at any time
● First Report Card reflects first weeks of school, students’ marks may reflect a smaller body of evidence and select curriculum expectations
● Best plan is to keep up-to-date with tasks, assignments and tests. Missed evaluations may be supported by Student Success teachers, Mr. Shea and Ms. Waddell

Final Evaluations
● Final Evaluations are culminating tasks held near the end of the year and are designed to reflect what the student has learned throughout the course
● Usually posted on teacher’s webpage / Managebac

● Student Success Room – every day during regular school hours
● Opportunity Room (aka O.R.) - every day at lunch, access to student-tutors
● Kickstart– Student Assistance Program – held Thursday mornings before classes begin
● Peer Tutors/On-line Tutors/Math Online/French learning support online
● Teachers (email contact information is on website under “Faculty” tab)
● Time management and Study Skills Workshops – throughout the school year at lunch in O.R. and with Student Success
● Ask for help as soon as difficulties arise → Guidance Counsellor, Student Success Teacher, Learning Support Teacher, Link Leader, and many more!
Community Involvement
● Completion of 40 hours of community involvement/volunteers hours required to graduate for Ontario Secondary School Diploma
● Encourage your student to complete the 40 hours in first year● LOTS of volunteer opportunities at CB … Food Drive, Relay
for Life are just two of many options!
● Visit Student Services to learn more.
Clean-Air Campus▪ Tobacco, cannabis and vaping: not permitted
on school property or in personal vehicles parked on school property.
▪ Use of tobacco, cannabis and vaping is only permitted on the city sidewalk beyond school property by those persons legally permitted.
▪ Bylaw officers visit regularly – fines are enforced by the City of Ottawa.
▪ Students under influence of alcohol or drugs are subject to suspension.
Cougars are Caring
● Over $100,000 raised per year for numerous charities by Colonel By students in past years
● Fundraisers are opportunities for volunteer hours
● Relay for Life in May 2019: passed the $1 Million mark in funds raised for cancer research
