WHY YOU SHOULD AERATE YOUR LAWN THIS FALL(StatePoint) Fall is a great time to aerate the lawn. Whether you do it yourself or hire a lawn care professional to do it for you, aeration at least once per year provides a number of benefits to your lawn, say experts.
The main benefit is to relieve compaction and increase pore space, which promotes gas ex-change and microbial activity in the soil and creates a better, more supportive environment for lawn health and vitality. Aeration also promotes better soil drainage, which helps keep disease at bay and allows more water to percolate into the soil from rain or irrigation, mean-ing less runoff and more water getting where it needs to go.
Ideal aeration timing depends on turf type and geography, says Lloyd Von Scheliha of Ex-mark Manufacturing, a manufacturer of turf care equipment. But annual aeration provides valuable agronomic benefits to virtually any turfgrass.
With that in mind, here are some tips from the experts at Exmark to get the most benefits
from aeration:
Timing: Ideally, aeration should take place during times of active growth to help with recovery. Avoid aeration during times of heat stress or times preced-ing dormancy. Its typically best to aerate cool season grasses in the spring or fall, while with warm season grasses, its best to aerate in late spring or early fall.
Proper equipment: Use gear that meets the needs of your lawn. For example, Ex-mark offers a 30-inch Stand-On aerator that makes quick work of even large proper-ties with the ability to easily maneuver around landscape features.
Follow-up: After aeration, its a good idea to water the lawn, as well as a good time to apply fertilizer or over-seed if needed. Be careful not to apply a pre-emergent if you plan to overseed, how-ever, as it will prevent the new seed from growing.
Dont let this important, but often overlooked lawn care task escape your attention this season. At the ideal time for your lawn, either take it upon yourself or hire a pro-fessional to give your grass a better chance at thriving.
DOING AWAY WITH DINING ROOMS
Formal dining rooms are no longer as coveted as they once were. Family dinners, if they manage to be at home, are now just as likely to be served in the kitchen or in another space, such as on the patio or in the living room while watching televi-sion, as they are in formal dining rooms. Trendy home-owners have begun to ditch dining rooms in favor of us-ing the space for other pur-
poses. Homeowners with a passion for literature can outfit the room with floor-to-ceiling bookcases to turn one-time dining rooms into the ultimate library. Those who need a bit more family space can use a dining room as a family room, outfitting the room with all storage nooks, a flat screen TV and a comfortable couch to make it more inviting. Because dining rooms are often located next to the kitchen, the re-moval of walls can make expanding the kitchen even easier. If their kitchens are cramped, homeowners can look into ways to spread out into the space allotted for the dining area. There are many ways to repurpose dining rooms so they are functional to homeowners specific needs, especially if those needs do not include formal dining areas.

Cohoes, NYCREATIVE WAYS TO RECYCLE LEAVESLeaves cascading down from trees indicate the arrival of au-tumn. However, colorful and awe-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long.
Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees roots and prevent competing plants from growing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But wet leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the lawn through the winter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a cou-ple of reasons why so much eff ort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall. The following are some creative ways to recycle leaves that fall from your trees in the weeks to come.
Mulch: Shredded leaves can make for a great amendment to fertilizer for garden beds and even the lawn. Leaves lying on the grass can be mulched into small pieces with a mulching mower so they dont choke the blades of grass. Leaves also can be broken down with a string trimmer, a leaf blower that has a vacuum function or a commercial shredder/chipper. Add the shredded leaves to a compost pile or use them to fi ll container plants before adding regular potting soil.
Insulation: Collect leaves to mound over delicate perennial plants and shrubs. The leaves will add more warmth to the soil and may help plants make it through harsh winters. Just remove the leaves slowly when spring arrives so that the soil underneath can get the sunlight and water it needs to thrive. Leave some leaves in the yard so that animals can use them as nesting material and line their dens for the winter.
Stu ng: Create whimsical scarecrows as part of your au-
tumn decoration scheme. Gather older clothes that you no longer use and stuff the sleeves of shirts and the legs of pants with leaves, which are less expensive and easier to come by than straw. Use a few pieces of straw around the neck and hand areas of the scarecrow for vi-sual eff ect. Tie off with twine and display your scarecrow.
Bedding: Chicken owners can use fallen leaves as bed-ding in their chicken coops. Dry leaves also may create more comfortable and drier conditions for goats and other livestock. Goats may look to recently fallen leaves as a nutritious food source. Gather the leaves and let the goats munch before you fur-ther rake and compost the leaves.
Decorations: Natural leaves can be used as decorations both inside and outside a home. String freshly fallen leaves together and wrap them around a grapevine wreath for a rustic door decoration. Leaves can be placed in clear vases and put on display for a cheap way to showcase some autumn col-or. Preserve favorite leaves with a lamination machine or by sealing them between heated sheets of waxed pa-per. Cut out the leaf shapes and use for hanging window decorations.
Recreation: Leaves have long been favorite toys for children, who eagerly await jumping into large piles of fallen leaves. Fill paper bags with leaves and draw a tar-get on the front. Let kids test their skill aiming for the targets. Children can cam-oufl age their clothing with leaves and masking tape and have a more intense session of hide and seek.

MINIMIZING THE MESS: HOW TO KEEP A CLEAN HOME
WITH KIDS (NewsUSA) - No doubt about it, Americans like their stuff
We like to accumulate and surround ourselves with ma-terial things.
The late George Carlin summed it up when he quipped, A house is just a place to keep your stuff while you go out and get more stuff.
The problem is that stuff creates a mess, and most people also like to be neat and organized. Unfortu-nately, the two concepts do not necessarily align, which is why companies like The Container Store boast close to billion-dollar bottom lines.
And when you have kids? Fugehdaboutit. The poten-tial for messiness multiplies tenfold.
For those wannabe orga-nized families who would like to declutter (or at least keep the detritus at bay), look no further than the tips below:
* Buy bins. These plastic tubs can be a godsend for parents whose kids either refuse to throw (or give) anything away, or who want to try and teach their kids to organize their things at an early age. It keeps the mess to a mini-mum and makes cleaning simple for both parents and children.
* Cue the cubbies. These three-drawer organizers can be stored in the closet, don't take up much room and al-low kids to store odds and ends that might otherwise be everywhere but their bedroom.
* Have an in box. A parent of any school-age child knows the amount of paperwork that comes home is obscene and overwhelming. To that end, having one place for all incoming papers is para-mount.
* Use hangers and hooks. These minimally priced in-ventions that hang on the backs of doors helps keep towels, scarves, coats and other items off the floor. Similarly, a shoe rack that hangs in the closet can also be a great organization tool for little ones.
* Consider a portable spit-toon. For smokeless tobacco users, a portable spittoon can mean the difference be-tween a permanent, albeit
accidental, stain and keep-ing a potential mess con-tained.
To that end, companies like FLASR, creators of smokeless tobacco accessory products, can help. FLASR's portable spittoons are an easy-to-use solution that prevents unwanted spills and leaks that often accompany spit cups and bottles. The FLASR flask, for instance, has an advanced closing mecha-nism, ensuring that it stays securely closed when not in use, even if curious little hands get a hold of it. In addition, the new 4-ounce FLASR pocket-sized spittoon is designed to allow users to open and shut it with just one hand, making it an ideal solution for everyday use.

GREAT WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR
BATHROOM(StatePoint) A bathroom can and should be much more than a utilitarian space. In the best circumstances, it will be a place to gather your wits for the day ahead and unwind before bed.
But building a better bath-room is necessary before you can truly relax in this space. To create the perfect at-home oasis, consider these ideas.
Coordinate
If you have ever replaced an appliance or fixture in your bathroom by necessity, you may have unintentionally created an uncoordinated look. If youre tired of being mismatched, particularly in a space where you seek seren-
ity, consider upgrading all your fixtures at once within one suite collection. Such coordination can provide a striking combination of style and performance.
Suite collections are easy ways to create a unified look. For example, collections from Mansfield Plumbing in-clude the Enso Suite, a con-temporary look with sleek lines, and the Waverly Suite, offering a traditional Eng-lish-inspired design. Suites include the essential toilets, sinks and bathtubs, and in some cases, whirlpools or air massage tubs; and are also customizable for variables like size and optional fix-tures. Whats more, this route makes good financial sense, as a suite collection offers less hassle and better value over a la carte purchases.
New Windows
Whats the point of beau-tiful expansive windows when you only plan to cover them with boring blinds or shades? To solve the age-old bathroom conundrum of needing natural light but wanting solitude and pri-vacy, think differently about your windows. Decorative privacy windows make for an ideal solution, with adornments and finishes that keep away prying eyes.
To match a privacy window to your interior design needs, consider those options from a brand like Hy-Lite, which offers vinyl-framed windows with silk-screened design styles inspired by a range of architectural schools of thought. Within their Home Designer Collection are di-verse styles, including the Metro window, inspired by modern architecture, and
the Prairie window with a transitional design versatile enough to accommodate many aesthetics.
Icing on the Cake
Decorative millwork can of-fer your bathroom elegance and luxury. Remember, bathrooms are humid, so look for moisture-resistant polyurethane moulding and accent pieces, such as those from Fypon. These quick do-it-yourself ideas can be completed in an afternoon when using pieces that are pre-primed and ready for in-stallation.
Install a set of pilasters on both sides of your shower stall and a door crosshead overhead.
Surround mirrors with lightweight polyurethane mouldings. Paint, faux fin-ish or stain the mouldings to complement the bathroom.
Install a small wall niche in a focal point of the room to display a flower arrange-ment or artwork.
Add distinction to the room with crown mouldings.
Give cabinets and shelving dimension and visual appeal
with brackets or corbels.
Theres no place like home. And within your home, theres no place like the bathroom. Give this impor-tant room your full atten-tion when making home upgrades.

ENSURE A MORE ENJOYABLE WINTER INDOORS WITH SIMPLE SOUNDPROOFING SOLUTIONS
(MS) As the weather gets colder, Americans inevitably spend more time indoors. If youre sharing a space with an excitable toddler, an aspiring rock musician or a TV enthusiast with a penchant for loud volumes, peace and quiet may seem increasingly elusive.
Try these simple soundproofing tips to restore or create a more tranquil atmosphere in your home:
1. Hush noisy appliances. Make sure your appliances are working smoothly. Unusual rattles, clanks or vibrations may mean its time for a repair. When a replacement is needed, seek out a quieter machine. New technologies have allowed manufacturers to lower the sound output of many models.
2. Seal sound leaks. Holes and cracks around windows and doors let outside noise into the home. Weather-stripping and/or caulking can help to eliminate the intrusion of exterior noise. Adhesive soundproofing tape can also help seal any problem areas.
3. Anticipate centers of noise when renovating. When designing a new room or renovating an existing one, consider its intended use and potential for generating noise. Playrooms, music studios or home theaters, for example, can be quieted with insulation. Look for a product such as Roxul SafenSound that is specifically designed to provide superior sound absorption and
can be applied to the interior walls of a noisy room to effectively reduce disruptive sounds.
4. Use sound-absorbent materials. Carpets and window drapes prevent sound from echoing around a room. If your home has hardwood, laminate flooring or tile, consider investing in a throw rug to reduce ambient noise and add some character to your space.
