– Slaves were forced to work in horrible conditions with little to no freedom
– Runaways were severley punished! (Tortured, even killed)
– Slaves were not treated like humans. They were sold, and families were split up.
7) Colonies in the southern United States produced cotton and tobacco in places called plantations. Here the climate was muggy and humid.
8) What was a colonial city like? Describe it:
A colonial city was busy with cobblestone streets. Shoemakers, blacksmiths, and thatch-roofed homes lined waterways. Waste was in the streets, and animals roamed freely.
9) What was most shocking to you about crime and punishment in the colonial United States?
People were put to death for cursing their parents or speaking against religious texts!
(Punishments were driven by religion.)
10)What made Benjamin Franklin a remarkable person?
• He ran away from home at 12 years old and created his own newspaper.
• His experiments proved that electricity does exist!
• He helped work on a draft of the Declaration of Independence.
• He was a free thinking, risk taker
• He was an inventor
11) Religion played a major role in the daily lives of colonies. For example, the Puritans, a strict religious group, created laws based on the teachings of the Bible. They asked people not to go out or work on Sundays, as they were days of rest and devotion!
