BOOK REVTEWS 87 40-page review entitled ‘AIDS and the Spectrum of HTLV-I 1 l/LAV Infection’, which includes six pages of topical rcferences. The article on pcriphcral airways inflammation by Hogg, from the University of British Columbia, analyses the histological, microbiological and immunological aspccts of the small airways in many com- mon lung disorders. To my mind, the pitce de resistance is Profcssor Garncr’s chapter on ocular angiogcnesis ~ esscntial reading for anyone involved in ocular or vascular pathology. Every teaching hospital or research institute with a strong pathological bias should subscribe to this series. Beware though, this is not thc pathologist’s Scient$c American, thc articles are all heavy reading- you will need at least a long weckend to get through them all. P. J. GALLAGHER University qf Southampton Post lnjbctious Glomerulonephritis. Subtypes, Clinico- puthological Correlations, and Fo~~ow-u~ Studies. K. SORGER. Gustave Fischer Verlag, Stuttgart, 1986. No. of pages: xivf 110. Price: DM 89.00 (soft cover). ISBN : 3 437 1 I046 2. This monograph is an expansion of a previously pub- lished paper (Clinical Nephrology 1982; 17: 114128) with more cascs, greater detail, and longer follow-up and reports the author’s observations on ‘post-infectious glomcrulonephritis’ -mainly the diffuse, proliferative cndocapillary glomerulonephritis which has followed streptococcal infection. It is basically a thesis in the Euro- pean style rather than a ‘Recent Advances’ rcview-type book, original work taking precedence over the review of thc literature, though many rcferences are cited. The core of the thesis is the series of observations on renal biopsies correlatcd to the clinical findings. The special interest lies in the claim that immunofluorescence permits subdivision of these cascs on the basis three patterns (‘starry sky’, ‘mesangial’, ‘garland’), onc of which (gar- land) is associated with persistent heavy proteinuria and possibly a worse prognosis. It is a thorough detailed piece of work and its valuc is that of an original papcr and a source of raw data rather than that or a work of medical journalism. Thc general pathologist will find the main message already incorporated into such renal text books as Heptinstall’s, whcre it is more acccssiblc than herc. D. R. ISBN: 0 89640 110 3. Prcsentcd in two parts, this book is aimcd at laboratory workers in haematology and attempts to bridge thc gaps between a technical manual, a textbook, and an atlas. Part one includes a brief resume of hacmatopoiesis, short descriptions of the haematological features in a wide range of blood disorders, and tcchnical dctails of methods of collcction and staining of blood and bone marrow samples. More experienced readers may find thc information limited, but each chapter is fully referenccd to facilitate further reading. Unfortunately, some of thc paragraphs relating to rapidly changing fields are already outdated. Part two comprises colour plates and descriptions con- fined to blood and bone marrow. The outstanding quality of the photography suffers in places from ovcrcrowding of too many plates on a single page. Nevertheless, the des- criptions are comprehensive and the layout is easy to follow. This atlas will provc extrcmely useful at the bench and is competitively priced when compared to similar haematological atlases, some of which provide lcss tech- nical information. An additional point in its favour is that it is an enjoyable book for general browsing. SUSAN WHITEHEAD John Radcliffe Hospital Oxfiird
