Plate 1. 10-year-old child with septic shock and minimal purpura that progressed to
purpura fulminans over a 7-day period. Histologic evidence of microvascular thrombosis.

Plate 2. Histologic examination of catheter-related mural thrombus in the common iliac vein
5 days after catheter placement. This specimen was obtained on autopsy in a 4-year-old child
who did not survive septic shock. In the lower right corner of the slide, a cross-section of the
catheter is noted. Surrounding the catheter there is an organized laminated fibrin layer,
followed by a more loosely organized layer of fibrin, platelets, and red blood cells extending
to the endothelial lining of the blood vessel. (See also Fig. 1 in article by Jacobs).
