    INTRODUCTION

COLOR THERAPY and LIGHT THERAPY are used ascomplementary therapies.

The use of color therapy is a truly holistic, non-

invasive and powerful therapy which dates backthousands of year; evidence of this can be found inancient texts from India, China and Egypt.

On the other hand phototherapy, also known as light

therapy and light box therapy, is the use of light totreat DISORDERS.

ACTION OF COLOR THERAPYOur nervous cell from childbirth has ahealthy vibration with a certain wavelength.

When a pathology takes place, thevibration of the cell changes.

In color therapy, the cell is imposed with ahealthy vibration.

A nervous cell collects and accumulate thelacking colors and reject the colors inabundance. This is how color therapy

    works.

    DEFINITION

Light therapy is a way to treat seasonal affectivedisorders (SAD) by exposure to artificial light. Seasonalaffective disorders is a type of depression that occurs ata certain time each year, usually in the winter. Lighttherapy or phototherapy (classically referred toas heliotherapy) consists of exposure to daylight or tospecific wavelengths of light using lasers light-

emitting diodes, fluorescentlamps, dichroic lamps or very bright, full-

    spectrum light.

    HOW LIGHT THERAPY IS USED?

Light therapy consists of exposing patient toartificial therapeutic lightning brighter about 5-20times brighter than in door lightning.

Patient usually sit with eyes open about 3 feetaway from eye level with set of broad-spectrumfluorescent bulbs designed to produce the

intensity of color composition of outdoor daylight, they then can engage in their usualactivities such as reading, writing or eating. Themost recently developed light therapy device isthe light visor.

It allows the person to move while receivingtreatment. The timing and dosage vary from personto person. Most literature indicates that lighttreatment administered in the morning is most

effective, the treatment per unit of time. Forexample: 2hrs of treatment with 2500Lux /dayappears to have an antidepressant effect equal tothat of 30 min/day at 1000lux.

    Preparation

Patients should consult their health careprovider before mainstream phototherapyHolistic and alternative practitioners usuallyask patients to bath or shower before

chromatherapy, and to wear loosely fitting whiteor neutral-colored clothing. Washing is considered necessary to removeany negative energies that the patient has

picked up from other people or from theenvironment.

Wearing light-colored loose clothing isthought to minimize interference with the

vibrations from the colored lightThe final step in preparation is a brief

period ofmedication or creativevisualization for the practitioner as well asthe patient. This step helps to create an

atmosphere of calm and relaxation forthe treatment.

    HOW LIGHT THERAPY WORKS?

Waves of light enter the eye.

A nerve that connects the retina to a key point inthe Hypothalamus region of the brain is activated.

Once activated the Hypothalamus sends a signalto the Pineal gland.

The pineal gland immediately suppresses thewithdrawal hormone Melatonin and stimulates the

production of the active hormone serotonin.

    AFTERCARE

No aftercare is necessary formainstream light treatments.

    Practitioners of alternative light

therapies recommend that patients sitor rest quietly for a few minutes afterthe treatment rather than returning

abruptly to their daily routines. Thisbrief rest is thought to maximize thebenefits of the treatment

    ABSTRACT

Many reports of the efficacy of light therapy are not

based on rigorous study designs. This analysis of

randomized, controlled trials suggests that bright lighttreatment and dawn simulation for seasonal affective

disorder and bright light for non seasonal depression

are efficacious, with effect sizes equivalent to those inmost antidepressant pharmacotherapy trials. Adopting

standard approaches to light therapys specific issues

(e.g., defining parameters of active versus placeboconditions) and incorporating rigorous designs (e.g.,

adequate group sizes, randomized assignment) are

necessary to evaluate light therapy for mood disorders.
