C omposer Joaquin Rodrigo Rodrigo was born in Saguento, Spain on November 22, 1901. Blind from the age of three, he began his musical

education at an early age on the piano. After graduating from the conservatory in Valencia, he went to Paris to study composition with Paul Dukas. Rodrigo’s writing style represents “Spanish na-tionalism” in which composers look within their own culture and history for musical inspiration. Fantasia para un gentilhombre (Fantasy for a gentleman), was written in 1954 and dedicated to Andres Segovia, who premiered the work in 1958. The Fantasia was composed with two “gentlemen” in mind: Gaspar Sanz, whose music is used through-out this piece; and, of course, Andres Segovia. Sanz was a court composer and guitarist fro King Philip IV of Spain in the 17th cen-tury. In 1674, Sanz published a book of dances and songs which reflected the popular demands for guitar and his music at that time. In Rodrigo’s Fantasia, we can hear exact melodic quotes from several pieces by Sanz, but Rodrigo’s own harmonization and orchestration make this piece very typical of Rodrigo. As Rodrigo said, “My ideal is that if Sanz could continued on page 5

Page 3 Western Colorado Classical Guitar Society Presents Nicolo Spera

Guitar Master Class

Nicolo Spera, head of the guitar department at Colorado Uni-versity, Boulder, is one of Italy’s finest guitarists, a thoughtful musician and a wonderful pedagogue. As a soloist, Spera is one of the few guitarists in the world to perform on both six-string and ten-string guitars. He has focused on the perfor-mance of Rennaissance music with Massimo Lonardi and on chamber music with Matteo Mela and Anna Sorrento. This will be Nicolo’s first appearance in Grand Junction, CO where he will share his knowledge of the guitar in the way of a Master Class. A master class is a lesson given by a performer after his/her performance.)

This Master Class is free and open to the public. If you are interested in performing for the Master Class or for more information, please contact Javier de los Santos at (970) 778-6116 or check us online at www.westerncoloradoclassicalguitarsociety.org

Continued from page 2

Hear the work, he would say, ‘It isn’t I, but I certainly can recognize my-self.”

The movements in the Fantasia are:

Villano y Ricercare: A villano is a peasant’s dance of free form, placed alongside the Ricercare which is very contrapuntal and fugal. This creates a contrast of freedom and structure.

Espanoleta Y Fanfare de la Caballeria de Napoles: The Espanoleta has its origin in Italy. In fact, the Espanoleta rhythm is exactly that of Siciliana, a dance from Sicily.

Danza de la Hachas: This movement sounds a great deal more deadly than it really is. Once again of peasant origin, this short but energetic movement represents the Spanish masculinity.

Canario: This is a vivacious dance form from the Canary Islands. This dance is characterized with “hemiola” - 3/4 time juxtaposed against 6/8 time. The strategically place cadenza toward the end adds to the excitement of this final movement of the Fantasia.
