Introduction/ Background
21
The University of Colorado Hospital registry team has an experienced registry staff.
Data element definitions were in various places causing inefficiencies
• Within our trauma registry’s “F1” key
• Meeting minutes
• Miscellaneous documents on our shared drive
We determined there was a need for a single repository to document the definition of
undefined fields and to provide further clarification on fields that are defined by the NTBD
and CDPHE.
Process in Developing a Hospital Data Dictionary
22
NTDB Data DictionaryTrauma Registry
FieldsColorado Data Dictionary
Implemented in June 2019
• We went line by line in our trauma registry to determine which fields are either:
• Defined and need further clarification
• Undefined
Definitions and values were created
• Presented to the entire registry team for approval
Survey Objectives
23
• To determine the usefulness of documenting the definition of undefined fields in a single
document commonly known as a hospital data dictionary.
• To get an understanding of how many undefined fields trauma centers are collecting.
• To determine how other trauma centers are using have a hospital data dictionary.
