Annica Neumüller’s work can be described as abstract expressionist – the paintings explore colour and tone and sometimes these can be read as possible landscapes or perhaps views through doorways, and their success lies in the way colours are laid next to each other and the bold gestural mark making that defines space and form. For Annica “abstract painting is complete freedom. It can incorporate blocks of colours but also figures – the only limit is in the artist’s brain, everything is possible. But having complete freedom can be the hardest way of working”.

At the other end of the spectrum, Andy Waite’s paintings look at landscape from a Romantic perspective. Working mostly from his studio, he draws from the surrounding Sussex environment - the rolling hills of the Downs, the coastal mist sitting on the horizon. His paintings are a celebration of English landscape. Using a soft colour palette that observes his landscape’s characteristics, Waite’s work has a reminiscence of the paintings from the Bloomsbury Group, who worked in the same county, but is at the same time executed in his own distinctive approach. His paintings express an emotive spontaneity that becomes semi-figurative – and it is here that the work of these two artists interplay in a quite harmonious way. This is a joyful exhibition celebrating colour and an exciting opportunity to experience the contrasting work by these two artists.

Annica Neumüller was born in 1963 in Stockholm, Sweden. She trained in fine art at the Ostersunds Konstskola, becoming a full time artist when she moved to the United Kingdom in 1999. Working from her Monmouthshire studio she produces works in acrylic, collage and mixed media and has held several solo exhibitions and group shows across Wales over the past seventeen years.

Andy Waite graduated from West Sussex School of Art & Design in 1977. He has been painting full-time since 1989. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions across the United Kingdom and also the United States of America and has held regular solo exhibitions in the UK including in London since 1992. This latest series of oils on canvas largely explore his surrounding landscape of Sussex. They carry a poetical expression of a place through shifting layers of paint and juxtaposed colour.
