    GREETINGS FROM THE MAYOR

On behalf of the City Council and residents of Richmond, I would like to extend sincere greetings to all those taking part in the eighth annual Culture Days weekend, September 29, 30 and October 1.

Arts and culture are integral to a vibrant Richmond and we are very proud and excited to be leaders in the national Culture Days

weekend that will see an estimated 850 communities offer 7,000 free cultural experiences across Canada this year. Since the beginning of Culture Days, Richmond has been among the top cities in Canada for the sheer number of free interactive activities on offer. This year, there are once again dozens of activities to help you get creative and inspired.

This year is particularly special as we collectively celebrate the 150 years since Canadian confederation. We are thrilled that many of the Culture Days events taking place across Richmond are inspired by this momentous occasion and offer people the opportunity to celebrate Richmond Canada 150 along with us.

Culture Days is a fantastic showcase for the impressive talent and creativity that exists in our own backyards. I encourage everyone to express their love of culture by participating. Get out and explore our heritage sites, learn a new dance move, sing along with a choir, meet local artists, tour some public art and roll up your sleeves to unleash your own talents.

Whether you are attending one or more of the special activities listed on these pages, or are one of the individuals generously sharing their talents and passions, you are part of a vital and important national movement to engage in the cultural life of your neighbourhood.

In 2012, your Council adopted an updated Arts Strategy as part of our commitment to advance the arts. The City of Richmond works in partnership with many community organizations to deliver a wide range of cultural programs and services year‐round, all of which contribute to the quality of life for Richmond residents. May this Culture Days weekend delight, fascinate and inspire another full year of creative and cultural discoveries for us all.

Malcolm D. Brodie, Mayor, City of Richmond

Canada 150 Commemorative Mural Event The City of Richmond invites you to join artists John Horton and Dean Lauze to celebrate the official unveiling of the mural, Arrival of SV Titania in Steveston. As part of the Richmond Canada 150 program the City commissioned eminent maritime painter John M. Horton to create work depicting the arrival of the SV Titania in the Steveston harbour in 1889. This event marked the first time a Europe-bound vessel had docked in Steveston to ship canned salmon. The Arrival of the S.V. Titania painting is permanently at City Hall and artist, Dean Lauze was commissioned to reproduce John Horton’s painting as an outdoor wall mural on the Steveston Hotel for a larger general audience to enjoy.Who Richmond Public Art | richmond.ca/publicartWhere Steveston Hotel, 12111 3rd Avenue | map uWhen Sat, Sept 30 11:00am–12:00pm
