CINCO CHARLIE GETS HIS FIRST FOALSpendthrift Farm’s Cinco Charlie sired his first reported foal on 13th January at Millennium Farms in Kentucky. The bay colt was born out of Peeker (Cactus Ridge) for breeder Toby Keith of Dream Walkin’ Farms. She was a winner on debut at two and went on to be Stakes–placed on her next start. She is a half–sister to three winners.

General Manager of Millennium Farms, Jay Ted Neel said: “The colt is very strong with plenty of leg. His angles are where you like to see them, and we are very happy with him.”

A son of Indian Charlie, Cinco Charlie was a leading two-year-old, winning on debut before following up in the Gr.3 Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs. Later that season he was a close third in the Gr.2 Futurity Stakes at Belmont Park. At three he demonstrated his stamina for a mile when landing the Riley Allison Stakes at Sunland Park and won further Stakes races at Churchill Downs and Fair Grounds, as well as finishing second in the Gr.2 Woody Stephens Stakes at Belmont Park.

His dam, Ten Halos (Marquetry), was a dual winner and multiple Stakes–placed, and she has gone on to produce four winners in total. The next dam, Shahalo, was responsible for seven winners, including the Gr.2 winners Bwana Charlie (Indian Charlie) and My Pal Charlie (Indian Charlie), and the Gr.3 winner Bwana Bull (Halo). Cinco Charlie is set to stand his second season at a fee of $5,000.

NATIONAL HUNT RACING REVIEWBRITAIN

DISSAVRIL MAKES IMPRESSIVE BRITISH DEBUT IN LISTED BUMPERMarket Rasen staged the first running of the Listed Alan Swinbank Mares’ Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race, which was won in handsome fashion by the Emma Lavelle-trained Dissavril. The daughter of Balko was making her British debut and first start

since finishing second in an AQPS bumper at Argentan last March. She travelled sweetly throughout and made progress to challenge the four-year-old Aimee De Sivola (Network) after turning for home. Before the two marker she headed her rival and drew away in the final furlong to a two and a half-length win. Aimee De Sivola stayed on well for a clear second, pulling eight lengths clear of Belle Amis (Black Sam Bellamy).

The winning five-year-old, who runs in the colours of Paul Jacobs, owner of the likes of Limato, was bred by Jean-Yves Viaud. She is the first winner from three runners out of the three-time AQPS scorer Odile (Smadoun). This is the further family of the Gr.3 Gold Cup Handicap Chase winner Triolo D’Alene, the three-time Listed chase winner Val D’Alene and the Gr.2 Rising Stars Novices’ Chase runner-up Arpege D’Alene.

Sporting Artist James Ward celebrated at Heritage CentreThe National Heritage Centre at Palace House in Newmarket has announced it is to host an exhibition celebrating sporting artist James Ward in its Packard Galleries. The exhibition ‘James Ward: Animal Artist’ opens on Friday, 4th May and runs until Sunday, 28th October 2018.

The chronological development of Ward’s works will be considered with an examination of the changes that occurred during his life with the progression from engraving to painting. In particular, the effect of Ward’s election to the Royal Academy of Art in 1811, which celebrates its 250th anniversary this year, and his appointment as painter and engraver to the Prince of Wales. The exhibition will also explore how particular animals informed his artistic approach, now recognised as Romantic.

Amongst the paintings on show will be ‘Fight between a Lion and a Tiger’ (1797) on loan from the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, and ‘View in Tabley Park’ (1813-18), on loan from the Tate.

ENTRIES REVEALED FOR CHAMPION HURDLECheltenham yesterday announced that 23 entries had been made for the Gr.1 Champion Hurdle, the highlight on the first day of racing at the Cheltenham Festival. This year the two mile and half a furlong race is worth a total of £450,000.

Headlining the entries is last season’s winner Buveur D’Air (Crillon), who is on an unbeaten run that stretches back to the Festival in 2016, when third in the Gr.1 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. Last year’s second My Tent Or Yours (Desert Prince), also runner-up in 2014 and 2016, the fifth home The New One (King’s Theatre) and the seventh Wicklow Brave (Beat Hollow), as well as the pulled-up Moon Racer (Saffron Walden) could re-oppose.

In addition to last year’s one-two, Nicky Henderson has entered Call Me Lord (Slickly), Charli Parcs (Anabaa Blue) and Verdana Blue (Getaway).

Willie Mullins, who has landed the spoils four times since 2011, is responsible for six of 11 Irish-trained entries, with his sextet headed by the 2015 winner Faugheen (Germany). Just the two horses have regained the Champion Hurdle crown, Comedy Of Errors in 1973 and 1975, and Hurricane Fly, winner in 2011 and 2013.

Mullins has also entered Melon (Medicean), last season’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle runner-up, Wicklow Brave and Bapaume (Turtle Bowl), as well as the chasers Min (Walk In The Park) and Yorkhill (Presenting).

Gordon Elliott is yet to have a runner in the Champion Hurdle, but has made three entries. Mick Jazz (Blue Bresil) gained a first Gr.1 win at Leopardstown over the Christmas period, while Apple’s Jade (Saddler Maker) and Campeador (Gris De Gris) complete his possibles.

Amongst the remaining entries are last March’s Gr.1 Triumph Hurdle scorer Defi Du Seuil (Voix Du Nord), Ch’Tibello (Sageburg), fourth in the Gr.2 International Hurdle at the track last month, and Pingshou (Definite Article), winner of the Gr.1 Top Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree last month.

how we are funded. The fund is still a vital tool to boost prize money which we could not provide without the support and generosity of the stallion masters.

“We are working with other racecourses and groups on similar projects to the group-wide partnership with The Jockey Club and its racecourses, and hope that the initiative that they have shown in approaching us will pave the way for further industry engagement.”

APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN FOR BHA TRAINING COURSEApplications are now open for a training course designed to recruit students at equine colleges to work in the racing industry.Launched last year as part of ongoing efforts to attract more racing staff, the ‘Entry to Employment Programme’ gives those who already have hands-on experience with horses the chance of a career in British racing.

The course consists of a five-week residential training course followed by a work placement at a training yard and will teach students the specifics of how to ride and look after racehorses.

Breeders, owners, trainers and spectators are invited to view the stallions after the event in left and right yards, where the parading stallions will be joined by Cable Bay, Coach House, Finjaan and Hellvelyn.

Light refreshments will be available during the morning for TBA members and those who wish to view the stallions and speak with stud representatives.

TBA Chief Executive Claire Sheppard said: “The TBA Flat Stallion Parade has always been an excellent opportunity for breeders to see the latest additions to the stallion ranks at the Tattersalls February Sale. This year it is great to see that in addition to the newly retired stallions, breeders will also have the chance to see Danon Ballade and Spill The Beans who are both new to the domestic market.

“The TBA team will also be on site during the stallion viewings in the Left and Right Yards to answer any queries. We are, as ever, thankful to Tattersalls for their continued support of this event which showcases the latest British-based stallions entering the market place.”

EUROPEAN BREEDERS’ FUND PARTNERS WITH THE JOCKEY CLUBThe British arm of the European Breeders’ Fund (EBF) has become an official partner of The Jockey Club, it was announced yesterday, in recognition of the major investment domestic stallion studs make into British racing via the British EBF.

The partnership is designed to help to heighten awareness within the British racing industry of the significant contribution the British EBF is making to racing in this country, using the platform The Jockey Club can provide through its 15-strong group of racecourses nationwide.

Philip Mitchell, Chairman of the British EBF, commented: “We hope that this new relationship will increase the profile of the organisation and help more people understand what we do and Africa’s Most Valuable

THE VOCALIST (GB)6yo mare by Rechargeex Ivy Edith (Blakeney)O: Million In Mind Partnership, B: Shade Oak Stud, T: Nicky Henderson €6,500 2015 Tattersalls Ireland August NH Sale by Crawford Brothers consigned by Shade Oak Stud

The mares’ maiden hurdle at Huntingdon last Friday over an extended two and a half miles looked competitive beforehand, but was won in taking style by the Nicky Henderson-trained six-year-old The Vocalist. Always travelling well, the daughter of Shade Oak’s Gr.3 winner and Gr.1-placed Recharge went to the front two out and quickly put the race to bed, winning by over four lengths under a hands and heels ride.

A bumper winner for Stuart Crawford at the second time of asking, she made her seasonal reappearance at Fontwell in December sporting the Million in Mind silks, where she was runner-up behind a useful individual. As always with the partnership’s horses, she will come under the hammer at the Goffs UK Spring Horses in Training Sale and black type would certainly add to her appeal come May.

Given a handicap mark of 125 on Tuesday, there are a number of options for this daughter of a winning Blakeney half-sister to the high-class hurdler Royal Derbi (Derrylin), who won the Listed (then) Irish Champion Hurdle amongst nine black-type wins and was runner-up to Granville Again in the 1992 Gr.1 Champion Hurdle. Amongst those options in an expanded programme, but one that requires a third qualifying run, is the EBF/TBA Mares’ NH Novices’ Hurdle Finale at Newbury at the end of March, which was upgraded to Gr.2 level last season.

Applicants must have recently graduated or be in their final year of studies for an equine or animal-related qualification at an equine college and have a strong interest and desire to work with racehorses.

The residential courses will run during the summer months at both the British Racing School in Newmarket and the Northern Racing College in Doncaster, with applications now open until April. Successful applicants will be invited to attend an assessment day which will include an interview and assessment of riding ability, fitness and suitability for the course.

THIS WEEK’S HEADLINES

CHARM SPIRIT OFF TO A FLYERWindsor Park Stud shuttle stallion Charm Spirit will be represented by his first crop of yearlings at Karaka later this month and confidence levels are high in the stud’s camp.

This comes off the back of a strong Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, where the farm sold four yearlings by the sire for an average of A$216,000.

“It’s a great start,” Windsor Park Stud principal Rodney Schick said. “To be the second leading first season sire in one of the biggest Australian sales is huge, it’s pretty exciting stuff. He was an exceptional racehorse and has a beautiful pedigree, so it’s nice to see that he is sought after in Australia.”

The son of Invincible Spirit was a high-class miler, winning six of his nine starts on the race track, including three Gr.1s, on his way to being rated the second highest three-year-old turf miler of his year.

Schick believes the Invincible Spirit link is another drawcard for Australian buyers. “The way Invincible Spirit has had his effect in Australia with I Am Invincible, we thought they would be sought after in Australia and it looks like they will be.”

Windsor Park will offer 26 yearlings by Charm Spirit at Karaka, with one of the highlights being a white filly out of the Zabeel mare The Opera House.

It will be the third year in a row the stud has offered a white yearling out of the mare. Each has sold well, a High Chaparral filly selling for NZ$450,000 in 2016 and last year’s Shamexpress colt selling for NZ$510,000, but Schick believes the Charm Spirit filly is the pick of the bunch so far.

“She is a really attractive filly, as the other white ones have been,” Schick said. “But she is probably the strongest of them all. She is strong and well put together, moves beautifully and has got a great temperament. I’d be surprised if she wasn’t well sought after at Karaka.”

Meanwhile, Schick said he has received positive feedback on Windsor Park Stud’s diverse 77-strong Karaka draft, which is represented by 17 stallions.

“It probably always makes it easier when you have a diverse bunch so that buyers are not stuck on making a decision between two horses all the time,” he said. “We are represented by some really nice stallions and are really happy with the diversity of the draft.

“We have had some great feedback from our on-farm parades. We have got a pretty even draft, so we have got a bunch of nice types that are athletic and move well. We have had really good feedback and hopefully that converts to some good sales at Karaka.”

Set to come under the hammer at Karaka a week on Sunday is Lot 652, the white Charm Spirit filly, who is out of the winning Zabeel mare The Opera House. This is the family of the dual Australian Horse of the Year, Gr.1 Cox Plate, Gr.1 Melbourne Cup and Gr.1 Caulfield Cup winner Might And Power.

Yorkshire farrier Justin Landy, whose main client is trainer Mark Johnston, has, in just four seasons, compiled a remarkable winners-to-runners ratio in points and hunter chases, one that was improved by this horse at Sheriff Hutton on Sunday. Now seven, he showed some promise in three Irish point-to-point runs, including when third at Lingstown in December 2016 – the fourth and fifth won subsequently, while the race’s winner, Whatswrongwithyou, has scored twice since for Nicky Henderson, including a hurdle at Newbury yesterday. Just over a year later Sir Lonica reappeared on the course under Landy’s care and made most to land his maiden when beating 14 rivals by a wide margin; the second and third had placed form and even a sloppy mistake two out made no difference to the winner.

His sire gets plenty of winners, while his unraced dam, a half-sister to six-race winner Titian Blonde, has produced successful foals under Rules and in points.

Landy’s record in four seasons is now 19 winners from 25 runners in points (76 per cent) and five winners from eight runners in hunters’ chases (62 per cent). If Sir Lonica runs in a maiden hunters’ chase in the spring, make a note.

KAPGARRY (Fr), 5g, Ballingarry – Kaprissima (Epervier Bleu) O: Wilson Dennison, B: Haras des Coudraies, T: Colin McKeever

This likeable type booked himself a place at Doncaster on Tuesday next week (Lot 80) when running out a game winner at Tinahely on Sunday. That was his fourth start, but trainer Colin McKeever said he had been looking for a staying track and the County Wexford venue had made the difference. The runner-up Dontbitedabait was an €18,000 store purchase making his debut for trainer Donnchadh Doyle and is worth following, but the experience this fellow had gained proved useful on the climb to the line.

He is the sixth foal of his dam, who was a winner in France, and, more pertinently, is a half-sister to Nicky Henderson’s good horse Geos and also to leading French sire of jumpers Kapgarde. This

horse’s sire is also resident in France, at Haras du Grand Chesnaie, from where he has been responsible for a steady flow of firsts.

PHOENIX WAY (Ire), 5g, Stowaway – Arcuate (Arch) O: Monbeg Syndicate, B: Eugene McDermott, T: Donnchadh Doyle €8,000 2013 Tattersalls Ireland November NH Sale by Ballyhealy Bloodstock, consigned by Castledillon Stud £15,000 2016 Goffs UK Spring Sale by Ryan Mahon, consigned by Peter Nolan

Fencing with precision, this newcomer landed a five-year-olds’ maiden at Killeagh on Sunday – and he can gallop, too. Quickening nicely under Rob James before the home turn, he was in control with two to jump and met each of the final two fences on a perfect stride. The second and third had shown glimpses of form without looking like world beaters, but the winner was easily their superior. His current owners should be well rewarded when he appears next Tuesday at Goffs UK’s Doncaster Sale (Lot 73), a venue where he was sold as a store in 2016.

His win on Sunday was a first for his unraced dam, who was a half-sister to the smart Castlemorris King, but the real action appears under his third dam Djallybrook, a winner in France and the producer of a ruck of talented Flat performers, including Gr.3 winner Kanmary (dam of Gr.1 victors Lit De Justice and Commander Collins) and Gr.2 winner Passionaria. Putting the late sire Stowaway’s blood into the bloodlines has created a horse who can run and jump.
