OUR MESSAGEDear Friends,Lives Change Here! It’s more than a mere tag line. Those three words express in a very concise way both what we do and what happens when we do it. For over seven decades, right here in southwest Washington, Columbia River Mental Health Services has helped people change their lives in a very significant and positive way. And guess what? Along the way all of our lives are also changed in a very positive way. Each person’s journey strengthens us; individually through our families and friends and on into our community. Ours is a rich history and a genuine source of pride. This past year has not been without its challenges. With each challenge we have seized the opportunity to improve our processes and enhance our services. I am proud to report that the people who are Columbia River Mental Health Services have met each challenge head-on, with courage, an innovative spirit and a collaborative strength. You don’t survive 70+ years by cowering when some external force roars in an effort to intimidate. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I extend to each member of the CRMHS family, as well as to our community partners, contributors and vendors, a very sincere and profound expression of thanks for helping us succeed in our mission while successfully overcoming the challenges we have faced. Looking ahead, the expansion of Medicaid services will continue to present many challenges. With a significant increase in the number of folks eligible to receive services, we have so far experienced an 11% increase in our census. We have prepared to meet this growth by recruiting and retaining top-notch staff. We are working hard to expand our collaborative relationships throughout southwest Washington in order to ensure that those who seek our services receive the very best care available. We will meet these challenges as we have all others – with compassion, resilience, stewardship and integrity! Financial performance is a challenge for any non-profit. We will continue to make use of the resources we have available while also looking for ways to enhance our revenue streams. Every dollar counts and each of us recognizes our responsibility and obligation to those we serve to use those dollars wisely. Only through the efforts of every individual member of the CRMHS team can we exercise control of our expenses while expanding our revenues, thereby providing a stable financial environment that will allow us to fulfill our mission and commitment to those we serve. I am proud to have been associated with CRMHS since 1998. This is a group of professionals who personify the spirit of service to others and their community. There is absolutely no doubt that whatever challenges we confront in the future we will meet head on and successfully prevail. We’ve been doing it for over seven decades and there’s no reason to believe it will be any different during the next seven decades. Lives Change Here!

Michael Graves, PresidentBoard of Trustees

Melody suffered from severe mental illness and was addicted to both meth and alcohol. A homeless single mother she knew things had to change so she came to Columbia River Mental Health Services.

Her anxiety was so great when she first started her job that she had to use voice recognition software. That is no longer the case; in fact she has spoken publicly countless times.

She has now completed her GED, has been sober for thirteen years, and even had her story published in The American Journal of Psychiatric Rehabilitation.

George has been able to decrease suicidal thinking, anxiety and depression. His hallucinations have lessened, he has improved his daily life skills and increased his overall stability. Soon he will be discharged from a skilled nursing home and return to independent living.

Ashley worked with her therapist to overcome PTSD from early childhood trauma. Her anxiety was so great she couldn’t go out in public. She has learned coping skills and how to manage her anxiety and is now comfortable being a teenager and socializing with people outside of her family.

WHO WE ARE: IN 1942 THE 18,000 RESIDENTS OF VANCOUVER WERE DEALING WITH THE EFFECTS OF WORLD WAR II AND THE RISING LEVEL OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY. EVA SANTEE AND A SMALL GROUP OF LOCAL CITIZENS FORMED A CHILD GUIDANCE CLINIC. THE PROFESSIONAL STAFF OF ONE, A PSYCHOLOGIST, TRAVELED FROM SCHOOL TO SCHOOL. NEARLY 75 YEARS LATER THAT SMALL CLINIC HAS EVOLVED INTO COLUMBIA RIVER MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES SUCCESSFULLY SERVING THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN, YOUTH, FAMILIES, ADULTS AND SENIORS WITH MENTAL HEALTH, MEDICAL, SUBSTANCE ABUSE, EMPLOY-MENT, SUPPORTED HOUSING AND RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT.
