T he Chinese have a saying: may you live in in-teresting times. Th ese are certainly interesting times in real estate.

Since 2006, markets across North America have taken a wild ride. Early in that infamous year, low inter-est rates turned a boom into a buying frenzy. Pre-owned homes sold within hours of being listed and wait times for new homes stretched from six months to a year. Prices soared, then leveled off in 2007, and have since dropped slightly.

Th e oddest trend during this hectic period was the relentless rise in prices even as interest rates doubled and demand weakened. Th e worst trend was the gradual downgrading of the term “aff ordable” to “attainable,” meaning housing that you’re lucky to get. Never mind being able to pay for it.

Industry representatives say that the boom is over and that the market will now return to normal. Frankly, “normal” will be a relief. Supply will catch up with demand and people looking for a builder will fi nd one who isn’t booked three years in advance. Builders and trades people will get some time off . Some of the fi rst-time buyers who dropped out of the panic market will

get another chance at home ownership. We’ll all get an attitude adjustment. Th e fact is that a normal real estate market in this country is a boom market in less fortunate parts of the world.

Th ere is certainly no slowdown here in the Columbia Valley. Since we launched Columbia Valley Homes in 2007, our landscape has transformed. New subdivisions are springing up everywhere. Luxurious new resorts are taking shape. Our towns and villages echo with the sounds of new home construction.

Th e commercial real estate market is strong, and residential demand is brisk enough to keep builders and realtors busy.

What does the future hold? No one knows, but from here it looks bright.

In this issue of Columbia Valley Homes we bring you up to date on some of the exciting new developments under way in the valley. We show you some gorgeous new showhomes and take you inside the extraordinary home of valley residents Brad Hill and Patti Acheson. If you’re planning to buy, build or renovate here, you’ll fi nd helpful information about how to get started. Read and enjoy.

A Home for LifeBrad Hill and Patti Acheson fi nd peace in the valley

A Home for Life

I n 1999, Brad Hill and Patti Acheson went looking for property in the Columbia Valley. Th e renowned nature photographer and his longtime partner already

knew and loved the terrain. It was just a matter of fi nding their special piece of it.

Th ey viewed plenty of prospects, but none said home. Finally a realtor suggested they look at 48 treed acres south of Fairmont Hot Springs. For Brad, a biologist with a gift for fi nding the art in nature, it was love at fi rst sight. “I had a ‘this is it’ moment the minute I stepped onto the property,” he recalls. Patti didn’t. “It was raw land with no road leading into it. I mean, c’mon, we had to hike in just to view it!”

Th e sheer beauty of the land won her over. Now the Calgarians needed a house, something simple that would serve their short-term needs and fi t into their long-term plan. “We were living in the valley about a third of the year, so it had to be more than a cabin,” says Brad. “Th e question was, ‘What do we build?’”

Th e answer was a 900-square-foot A-frame Trappeur log home. It had a galley kitchen, a lofted bedroom and just enough move-about room for its owners and their Por-tuguese water dogs, Jose and Diego. “It was a quick, easy house,” says Patti. “We thought it could eventually become our guesthouse.”

In time, though, adding onto the house made more sense than building a separate structure. With a little clear-ing, the existing site had yielded a lovely view of Columbia Lake. And the house had a warm, woodsy ambience that could be extended. Architect Shelley McAneeley collabo-rated on a fl oor plan, and Pinnacle Creek Homes agreed to build. Both were terrifi c, says Brad. “Shelley really lis-tened to us. And Aaron Cameron with Pinnacle Creek had some great design ideas.” Patti adds, “We had our own ideas, of course, but a lot of what you see here is Pinnacle Creek.”

What you see is a supremely comfortable home that even at 4,200 square feet manages to be cozy. Th e main fl oor of the original structure still serves as the great room, but with bigger windows overlooking the lake. Th e kitchen is bigger and defi nitely higher-tech. Th e loft is now Brad’s studio.

A corridor connects the original house to a new wing, with a spacious master suite on the main level and a guest suite behind a fi tness/theatre room on the lower, walkout level. Patti, who owns and operates Pilates Pursuits in Invermere, keeps a home offi ce there. On both levels the corri-dor doubles as an art gallery for Brad’s work and as a view deck overlooking a Zen garden with a water wall. Th ere is a covered porch with a fi replace, for socializing on summer nights.

Th e couple’s homey taste is every-where, in the black-stained maple cab-

inets and built-ins, the fi r beams and blonde maple fl oors, the lived-in fur-nishings and of course Brad’s riveting art. His photograph of a tree swallow captured last year on the property is the offi cial symbol of this year’s Wings Over the Rockies festival.

Patti and Brad share a deep com-mitment to the environment, and so of course the Bondu Log House (a patented method of building for du-rability and pest resistance) is super energy effi cient, with solar panels sup-plying plenty of power, a cistern for collecting rainwater and a host of oth-er high-tech but low-impact utilities. Wherever possible, they used recycled building materials, even for the coun-tertops.

Brad’s favorite feature of the house: Th e matching leather chairs with a peaceful view of the lake. Pat-ti’s: the boot room. “What can I say?” she jokes. “It’s a special room.” It’s a special house, truly a home for life.

Donna and Dave Rae, co-owners of Columere Park De-velopments, are the visionaries behind Spirits Reach. Enviro Custom Homes is their builder of choice.

Th ere are four fl oor plans from which to choose at Spirits Reach. Th e original showhome is the 1,613-square-foot Har-mony model. Opened in 2007, it now doubles as the sales offi ce. Th e new showhome is the 1,797-square-foot Spirit model, the most spacious of the plans.

Th e Spirit model has soaring vaulted ceilings, a generous great room, two bedrooms, a walk-in pantry/laundry room and a loft. Th ere are 670 square feet of optional living space at entry level, and a two-car garage.

Decorated by Erin Reid Design and furnished by Th e Natural Home, both homes say “top drawer” from top to bottom.

Solid maple fl ooring, knotty alder cabinets, solid cast door hardware, slate, granite and air-quality certifi ed carpet are just a few features of these exceptional homes.

“When it comes to fi nishing, we don’t use terms like upgraded,” says Donna Rae. “Excellence is our only stan-dard.”

Th at philosophy continues outside at Spirits Reach, with metal-clad windows, concrete siding, 40-year asphalt shingles and other low or no maintenance materials. For all, the Raes chose light colors that harmonize with their sur-roundings.

All the amenities you expect in a luxury home are there, of course: roughed-in security, vacuum and hot-tub wiring, audio in the living room and master bedroom, and plenty of storage space for those water toys.

C oncentrating on several diff erent as-pects of photography, Kayla specialises in commercial and architectural work,

weddings, portraiture and creative pieces called “Honouring Life”.

Th ese unique pieces layer beautiful photos with inspiring text to create artwork that cel-ebrates people’s passion for life. Created from photos that she has shot or with a client’s existing pictures, the artwork brings new life to treasured memories and allows people to experience time travel in a single piece of art.

Kyla has been vacationing in Invermere with her family since she was fi ve years old.

She grew up in Winnipeg and then attended the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver, where she completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts with a Photography major in 2003.

It wasn’t until her third year at Emily Carr that Kyla started to combine her writing with her photographic imag-ery. After Kyla graduated, she started to explore digital pho-tography and ended up shooting architectural work across North America.

“Architectural photography is about capturing the es-sence of my subject in such a way that the picture itself is transparent," she says.

"I think that architectural photography is an art that requires immense attention to detail, focus and fi nesse. My photography is about framing spirit and conveying life. Th ere is just as much personality and unique expression in a building as there is in a person.”

After visiting her parents, who recently retired here, Kyla made a permanent move to Invermere last summer. She now runs Kyla Brown Photography out of her home.

Her pieces are currently for sale in Village Arts and the Pynelogs gift shop. Kyla is also creating a series of paintings on antique windows. All her work can be viewed on her website at www.kylabrown.com

Copper Point ResortLuxury’s new address

Copper Point ResortIf you’re a golfer who’s been to Invermere, you’ve most

certainly enjoyed a round or two at Copper Point Golf Club, the picture-perfect 18-hole course on the east side of Lake Windermere.

Now you can play and stay—at the luxurious new Cop-per Point Resort.

Th e four-storey, 107-condo resort is taking shape on six scenic, treed acres at the crossroads of Invermere and Highway 93.

It will be a fi rst-class resort, off ering both a recreational lifestyle and a secure investment to its owners. Whole or quarter-share ownership of suites is available, and sales are brisk.

“We are eighty percent sold, but we are fortunate to still be able to off er one, two and three-bedroom units in several diff erent views and price ranges,” says general man-ager Rose Marie Regitnig.

August 2008 is the targeted date for the resort’s grand opening. In the meantime, the Copper Point Golf Club is doubling in size with the opening of the brand new 18-

hole Ridge course. Th e Ridge and the original Copper Point course will share the existing clubhouse and will be connected by an underground tunnel below Highway 93. Copper Point opens in March. Th e Ridge is scheduled to open for the fi rst time in May 2008.

After 36 challenging holes, the resort will welcome you home. You’ll enjoy a generous living space complete with a private deck to enjoy the views and fresh mountain air.

Your suite will be equipped with such niceties as a fl at-panel television and a gourmet kitchen.

If you’re too tired to cook, you can opt for upscale din-ing in the resort’s gourmet restaurant, or casual eats at the patio, café or lounge.

Your décor will be a perfect blend of alpine warmth and urban sensibility, with granite, slate, marble, mosaics, solid woods, lush fabrics and natural stone fl oors and walls. Expect warm colors, fi ne fi nishes and thoughtful touches throughout.
