Greetings from Saint James School! We are so excited about the coming year! Our faculty, staff, and board members have worked tirelessly, writing a long-range plan for our school. Never have I witnessed such enthusiasm for the possibilities that lie ahead for our students. From this plan, we are taking steps to implement our twenty-first century learning initiatives, particularly in the area of technology. With our campus-wide wireless infrastructure now complete, we are increasing the use of new technology in the classroom, along with continued use of our Smartboards. These exciting new tools and techniques will enhance our extraordinary, challenging college preparatory curriculum.
If you live in the Montgomery area, you have seen our grand, new school entrance that appropriately complements our beautiful facilities. Thanks to the many generous donors who gave specifically for this purpose. The City of Montgomery and the Chamber of Commerce have been so supportive of our efforts to construct this splendid addition to our campus. Simply stated, we have the finest independent school facility in Alabama. We will dedicate the new entrance soon and look forward to celebrating this event with our donors.
Saint James School is the first major independent school in Montgomery to investigate and implement a full-day kindergarten. After thoroughly researching the possibilities, we discovered an educational need in the River Region to match what other major independent schools around the state offered with all-day K5 opportunities. We are thrilled to open three full-day K5 classes and one half-day option for the 2011-2012 school year. The all-day structure affords additional exposure to academic, art, and recreational offerings in the afternoon hours. Our parents enthusiastically embraced this idea and we are thrilled for our students to have this option. Once again, we are the leaders in innovation in Central Alabama.
Our arts programs continue to flourish! With the production of Beauty and the Beast, we found ourselves welcoming many visitors from not only our area, but from around the state. Our music students continue to receive awards as well as our visual arts students. These awards are now national in scope, not just local or state. We welcome students who choose to attend STJ because of our arts programs. Our personnel are outstanding as they lead these young men and women to appreciate and learn about the arts. During the third week of June, we hosted the Alabama Institute for Education in the Arts as teachers from around the state were trained to weave the arts into the curriculum. Many of our own teachers were either participants or teachers in this wonderful workshop.
We continue to build strong coaching in athletics and welcome the opportunities provided for our students. Our coaching staffs continue to get better and better and the role models provided to our students are exemplary. To say we are excited about our athletic opportunities this coming school year is an understatement! I am so very proud of our students and the work ethic they are showing to become good student athletes.
Saint James truly is a 21st Century Learning School. Never have I been more excited about the possibilities for our students as we look to implement our long-range plan. If I could go back in time, I would want to be a student at this school from preK3 to senior graduation! Our students are truly blessed to be in an environment where they are challenged, molded, nurtured, loved, and made ready for tomorrow’s world. All of you help make this happen by your friendship and generosity to our school. Please accept my invitation to join us on campus in the near future for an event or just to walk around campus. Saint James School students raised $6,500 in April, on behalf of victims of Alabama’s devastating April tornadoes. Red Cross executive Director Jackie Buck said the donation was the largest received from a school in the Montgomery area. A few weeks earlier, STJ’s 2011 eighth graders spearheaded a school-wide effort that raised $4,400 for Japanese victims of the March/April earthquake/tsunami/nuclear disasters that rocked the small Asian island country.
The Saint James Speech and Debate team competed at the state tournament on Apr. 1-2 and brought home two state champions – 2011 senior Courtney Meadows, the State Champion in International extemporaneous Speaking and 2011 sophomore Brandon Herrin, State
Champion in lincoln Douglas Debate. In addition, Courtney Meadows and Branden Greenberg were quarter finalists in Public Forum Debate, Meagan Ashner received Second Place in Poetry, and Abigail Greenberg received Third Place in Original Oratory.

The Montgomery Advertising Federation awarded a Silver Addy to STJ’s advertising agency, lWT, for the branding banners located across the campus. The Addy Awards are given yearly to honor advertising excellence across the River Region. Go STJ!

doodle 4 googleemily Kent, a 2011 sixth grader, was one of two finalists from Alabama in the Doodle 4 Google contest for Grades 4-6! each of the 400 State Finalists, chosen from 107,000 entries from across the country, received a Doodle 4 Google t-shirt, and an official winner’s certificate. In addition, each finalist’s art was featured on the Doodle 4 Google contest web site.

only Perfect 8th grade language score in u.s.Cassie Sadie’s perfect score in the u.S. National language Arts league Competition was the only perfect result by a 2011 eighth grader anywhere in the u.S.! The National language Arts league Competition is administered to students in grades 2-12 across the country, to assess their understanding and use of the english language. The test consists of 50 multiple choice questions based on the following topics: spelling, vocabulary, reading comprehension, analogies, and grammar.
Middle schooler Taylor Meadows won First Place (Grades 7-9) in the 2011 Funky Junk competition for her entry of a dress made from the pages of a phone book. To enter, students had to design an art piece composed of used materials and/or recycled goods.

2011 senior Ivy Kilpatrick won Second Place in the Young Southern Writers Project’s Annual Playwriting Competition, sponsored by the Alabama Shakespeare Festival (ASF). An off-shoot of the Southern Writers’ Project, the young playwright’s competition was created to give a voice to a new generation of Southern authors and encourage Southern high school students to hone their writing skills. ASF officials said the number of plays received this year surpassed any past numbers, and many strong voices emerged from the submission pool.

Spivey Honored with hitchcock AwardAs anyone who has attended high school in Montgomery, Alabama can attest, the Jimmy Hitchcock Memorial Award is the highest honor a high school senior athlete in the Capital City can receive. The prestigious award is given annually to the male and female athletes who have displayed the most exemplary moral character, Christian values, academic achievements, tireless effort both inside and outside the athletic arena, and for their school, church and community involvement. In 2011, an STJ high school senior was again the winner.
Will Spivey, son of laura and Mike Spivey, received the honor at an April awards banquet. Spivey, a versatile football, baseball, and track and field athlete, also had a 3.9 cumulative grade point average at Saint James.
“What a pleasure it has been to watch Will Spivey reach his senior year!” said Head of School Melba Richardson “I have always admired his personal qualities, especially his deep faith and his ability to always make good decisions. He has been a powerful role model for younger children, taking time to positively mentor them. Will is an outstanding, talented young man and his positive outlook on life is refreshing in today’s world.
Spivey is set to attend Troy university on a full academic scholarship and plans to major in Athletic Training, with a leadership minor.

stJ team Wins Apple iPads for besting Alice 3d competitors in computer olympiad
Saint James School won First Place in the Alice 3D portion of the 12th Annual Math and Science Olympiad held in April at Alabama State university. The annual competition includes three sections: Alice 3D, Math, and Website. In all, 17 Alabama schools were represented including lAMP, Montgomery Catholic, Montgomery Academy, Booker T. Washington, Robert e. lee, Saint Jude, Sidney lanier, and Saint James from the Montgomery area.
In addition to overcoming the competition in the Alice 3D (an innovative programming environment that uses 3D graphics to create animation, play an interactive game, or share web video) Saint James came in Second Place in both the Math and Website competitions.

2011 junior Sammie eiring received a Silver Key Award for her outstanding artwork in the National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition. Founded in 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers in the u.S.
eiring’s Silver win came in the Printmaking category, for her dry point etching, “Smile to the Sky,” depicting a relaxed girl, content and smiling. “I really love drawing people,” eiring said. “It’s so much more interesting than still life, and it’s very difficult.”
eiring is one of only fourteen young Alabama artists to win honors at the national level. The win marks the second year in a row that eiring has won a Silver
Key at the national level of the awards competition.
Pleased with the announcement, eiring, who came to Saint James as a freshman, had strong words of support for her art teacher, Jim Gunter. “He is a lot stricter than previous art teachers I’ve had at other schools. He cares about your art, and gives you his honest opinion.”
The first level of recognition for outstanding work for the southeast Region-at-large division of the Scholastic Art Awards competition recognized 16 works from Saint James artists with regional Gold Keys. Because Alabama did not sponsor a regional competition this year, the works were judged in New York City.

Motorists on Vaughn Road in mid-May saw a
daunting site. What appeared to be a large
house fire, was actually a “controlled burn”
conducted by the City, on an STJ structure.
Once a home on property that included a 275-
acre dairy owned and operated by the Carlisle
family, city officials agreed to the burn when
the school’s Board of Directors determined the
structure, built in 1939, was beyond repair.
Saint James turned the event into a learning
moment for many students, who observed
the burn as part of a classroom activity.
Some buildings from the dairy still remain
on the property and school officials say they
hope to, one day, incorporate those into
additional outdoor learning opportunities.
The long-range plan for the site of the
burned building is development of a third
entrance to the Saint James campus.

Saint James School seniors in the Class of 2011 will be attending a variety of colleges and universities throughout Alabama and across the country when classes begin later this month. The 76-member Class of 2011 received more than 3.7 million dollars in scholarships and included a Jimmy Hitchcock award winner, a state forensics champion, a state wrestling champion, a Montgomery exchange Club Youth of Year, and the Alabama Vocal Association’s Outstanding District Male and Female Choral Students, to name only a few of the class’ many honors.
Saint James placed in the top five of 26 competing business teams in Impact Alabama’s “Montgomery’s Brightest Company Trivia Contest” in late March. Participating businesses included the Southern Poverty law Center, Baptist Health, Beasley Allen, Cappell & Howard, Montgomery Academy, WSFA, Institute for Total eye Care, Teach for America, and Faulkner university, among others. More than 300 energetic onlookers and contestants attended the Montgomery event. Rounding out Montgomery’s top five were Faulkner university, Anzalone liszt Research, Central Alabama Community Foundation and the Southern Poverty law center (tied for the same position), Hill Hill Carter, and Saint James School. The volunteer team played for a $10,000 prize to the non-profit of their choice.

Robert Bentley took his oath of office on in Jan., the Saint James Marching Trojans proudly participated in the event – the only non-college band from Montgomery to march in the inaugural parade. The 60-member band, directed by Susan Smith, played Stars Fell on Alabama and Sweet Home Alabama.
STJ Band members were further honored in June when they learned the band was one of only two private schools in the state to receive “Superior with Distinction” for their performance at the ABA Music Performance Assessment. A total of 380 bands across Alabama participated in the assessment.
Saint James School’s 21st Century learning Team attended iSummit 2011 in Nashville in late June, learning all the latest technological advancements for the classroom. using QR codes, implementing Web 2.0 apps, and collaborating with Google docs were among the topics inspiring the STJ instructors who will use the newly-learned tools to facilitate classroom teaching in 2011-2012. In late July, a team of nine STJ faculty, Board, and staff members traveled to Cupertino, Cal. in the Silicon Valley, to meet with leaders of the Apple Corporation, tour the facilities of the technology giant, and learn how the company’s innovative tools can benefit STJ students.

hile Saint James’ choral and dramatic arts have long enjoyed a strong reputation in the Capital City, the spring production of Beauty and the Beast is proof positive of why the department commands such high community respect and praise.
even before the musical opened, cast and crew realized they’d be playing to a packed house every night, as tickets for each of the four shows quickly sold out and an unprecedented fifth performance was added. It rapidly became apparent that Broadway’s eighth longest-running production - and a Disney favorite - would also soon become an STJ favorite.
“I decided to choose Beauty and the Beast for our spring musical for two reasons,” says lonny Harrison, the school’s 14-year Director of Theater. “First, it is a fun and challenging show with great music and a good message. Second, I simply knew we had the talent to do it.”
Harrison, who determines STJ’s production lineup each year during summer break, knew every aspect of Beauty and the Beast would be challenging, as well as expensive. Sitting down with his students to establish the show’s budget, Harrison was pleased at their determination to perform the classic children’s story. Based on student enthusiasm Harrison and Choral Director lis Donaldson agreed to sacrifice profits from their annual Cabaret fundraiser to stage the show.
The larger budget for Beauty and the Beast was most obvious in the colorful costumes and evocative sets and backdrops. elaborate character outfits, rented from a costume house in Florida, included a frightening beast, complete with hump, claws, and animal’s mouth; a human wardrobe with drawers that opened and closed; and a luminescent human candlestick, to name only a few of the fanciful costumes. Attention to detail was evident in all aspects of production.
“This production was so beautiful. It involved enormous research and exquisite detail, and I believe that the reality of the setting rubbed off on the students so that they could act believably,” says Donaldson, the 13-year veteran Choral Director at the school.
Although the costumes and sets charmed audiences, the student actors stole the spotlight. The casting was near perfect, as each actor realistically embodied his or her part and skillfully belted out the show’s blockbuster tunes.
A Beautyful Production
“I always have to think about who can actually play the part and how the chemistry will work between characters,” says Harrison of casting the roles. “I think the students really thrived with this play because they had a recollection of how the characters were in the Disney movie, and each character was very accessible. Also, when you have abstract, out-of-the-box characters, such as a spoon and a fork, you can bring more creativity to the part.”
Performing Beauty and the Beast required 32 rehearsals – everyday after school until 6 p.m. and until 8 p.m. the week of the show. The hard work was evident to audience members, who raved that the musical was “the best thing they had ever seen” and “there was no way they [STJ] could ever out-do it.”
“I hope that my students accomplish everything that they want,” Harrison says. “I always say ‘if there is anything else you want to do besides acting, then do it. If you wake up in the morning and all you want to do is perform, then pursue acting. If not, then do something else.’ All I ask is that my students walk away with an appreciation for doing something great.”

sing the summer to condition and prepare for the upcoming football season is standard procedure for Saint James Athletics, but this year’s workouts brought a new twist, with veteran coach and consultant Spence McCracken evaluating the school’s program and offering recommendations to the team. Only an advisor, McCracken was hired in January by Head of School Melba Richardson to observe all phases of the football team and to work directly with Head Coach Karl Smeltzer to make improvements to the program.
“Coach McCracken is here at Saint James to look at the football program objectively and to make
suggestions,” Richardson says of her new football advisor. “It was an opportunity to bring in someone who has been a national leader in high school athletics. Sometimes as a school you need an outside eye to come in and examine how you are doing.”
McCracken’s football experience is extensive, even legendary, making him more than qualified for the advising post. A Montgomery native, McCracken previously coached in a variety of other schools, including Robert e. lee and Opelika High School. His successful 36-year coaching career has been productive, leading three teams to state championships. McCracken was named uSA Today’s National Coach of the Year in 1986, and he was inducted into the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Hall of Fame in 2004. He retired from active coaching in 2008.
McCracken still lives in Opelika, but says he is especially excited to find himself back in Alabama’s Capital City. “I have already met so many interesting, kind people here at Saint James.”
After the spring exhibition game, STJ’s battery of coaches formalized specific changes. Smeltzer observed that the offense, with over 400-yards, was strong, while the defense needed improvement. McCracken’s suggestions led Smeltzer to hire Nelson Hall, a new defensive coordinator with 30 years of experience in neighboring Georgia. The addition to the coaching staff is expected to strengthen the weaker defensive line of the team. Other conversations between the two coaches led to ordering replacement racks for the weight room as well as reorganizing the existing racks to alleviate crowding and increase safety and strength-training opportunities for the players.
McCracken has also encouraged improvement in the number of scholarly athletes in the football program because, he says, football programs are built with many smart, strong athletes. The coaches have been eyeing sophomore CJ Duncan as a potential leader in this area. Duncan won the sophomore QB Most Valuable Player Award at the National underclassman Combine and is considered one of the top recruits for the Class of 2013. McCracken stresses the need for students and parents to talk up the Saint James football program
to gain even more athletically and academically qualified players.
“Spence McCracken has been very helpful to the Saint James football program. He is the finest man that there is in this world,” Smeltzer says of McCracken.
Working together nearly every day, Smeltzer and McCracken maintain a strong relationship, forged out of mutual respect and admiration. Despite that, McCracken insists he will stay “in the background and out of the spotlight” and that Trojan supporters should not expect to see him on the sideline during games.
“Karl is a great man to work for and to work with,” McCracken says. “He is an outstanding football coach who knows the game, works his players hard, and instills discipline in them. everyday we come in and work harder. We strive to get the kids excited and motivated to be their best. I want to help the football program by making improvements and changing mentalities. I don’t know how or when it will happen, but all we can do is hope that the changes we are making will show up on the field.”

To set the stage for the event vintage automobiles were parked just outside the high school gym. Students and faculty got into the “swing” of things by dressing in 50s attire, from poodle skirts and bobby socks for the girls to rolled up jeans and white t-shirts for the boys.
A featured highlight of the pep rally included a prominent role for teachers, including the fully outfitted “Elvis,” the “King” of Rock ‘n Roll (played by sophmore English teacher Andy Clinton, complete with his blue suede shoes.) Following the 45-minute pep rally, a reception for past faculty, board members, and administration was held in the Saint James History Lab, on the upper level of the elementary school’s Maggie Means Media Center.

leading the wayWhile half-day pre-school programs have long been the norm in the area’s independent school kindergarten environment, Saint James surprised the city’s educational community in November with the announcement of the first all-day kindergarten program offered by an independent school in the Montgomery area.

“You may recall that earlier this year I contacted you to inquire about your interest in an all-day kindergarten option for the 2011-2012 school year,” began a Dec. letter to K-4
parents from Head of School Melba Richardson.“ …we have completed our research, visited several schools in other cities, and can now report back to you our plans. Our Board of Directors approved and supports this choice for the upcoming school year.”
“Although we suspected a positive response from parents, we had no idea how positive that response would actually be,” says Richardson today. “Initially we had planned to offer one all-day class, with the rest of the children enrolled in our wonderful half-day curriculum.”
“ultimately, parents were so thrilled with the structured, full–day option that we ended up with three full-day classes and one half-day class,” Richardson adds, smiling.
The STJ research team visited several schools, from Daphne/Fairhope and Mobile in the southern part of the state, to Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Anniston in the north, compiling information on various all-day K5 programs.
“In most other cities in our region, full-day kindergarten is the norm for independent schools,” says K5 teacher Colleen Murphy, a member of the STJ team that researched the all-day prospect. “A question we always asked was, ‘Why did you go to an all-day program?’ The other schools just looked at us, almost incredulously, and replied, ‘Why would you not?’ Then they’d show us how the extra hours provide so many opportunities for additional learning.”
lower School elementary Assistant Principal Clare Simon thinks one of the biggest advantages of the longer day is that the extra hours provide time to work on skills taught in the morning lessons. The afternoons will incorporate more reading, writing, science and social studies emphasis, as well as more time for enrichments.
“Now parents have the option of an academic environment for their children during afternoon hours,” Simon says, beaming. “Our all-day five-year-olds will have time for increased challenges or even opportunities for remediation, if a student needs that. The teacher can expand on the basic paper and pencil learning, and do more active learning with the children.”
Both administrators and faculty readily admit that the curriculum for STJ’s half and full-day K5 program are the same, with the only difference being that, with more hours, the all-day teachers can develop additional, creative ways to enhance the curriculum.
“But, regardless of whether students are in a full or half-day program,” Simon adds, “all the children will have the knowledge base to do first grade work. Our years of experience with the half-day program have more than proven that.”
“I think the reason we have such good results here at Saint James is because the parents can sense the strong connection between the teachers,” adds Murphy, a 15-year K5 veteran. “That’s on top of the relationship we develop with the families and the strong support provided by the administrative staff. It’s just such a unified approach. When a child walks in the front door, parents realize that all parts of the engine are working together, as they should. It takes that extraordinary connectivity – everyone working together – that creates the best opportunities and results for the child.”
The team of teachers assembled to teach all-day kindergarten, (l- Ashleigh essig, Heather Pinckard, Mendy Sharp, and Colleen Murphy,) have experience in several different arenas, from starting an all-day kindergarten program in another state to several years of previous teaching experience in both preK-4 and K5.

Brothers, Matthew and Stephen Kwan worked together and fought against one another, to train each other for victory.
“Going into wrestling season this year [Stephen] and I had a goal...to become champions,” older brother Matt Kwan explains. Haunted by the state runner-up status he achieved during his sophomore and junior years of high school, Matt was determined that, as a senior, he would finally reach his longtime goal.
Following the 2010 state finals, Matt began CrossFit workouts religiously, for one to two hours most every day. When the 2011 wrestling season began, the brothers and their teammates had a rigorous routine: a one to two mile run, followed by wrestling, and finally ending with tough conditioning. To inspire the young men, their coaches kept reminding the boys how good it would feel to win.
Despite the vigorous training, Matt says his championship match was by no means easy. By the start of the second period, he was down by four points. By the third period, he had tightened the score to a much closer 5-4. Just as victory was in sight, Matt tore his right bicep and hyper-extended his elbow, bringing the game to a 5-5 draw. With only thirty seconds left and two new injuries, Matt managed to secure the two points he needed to win the championship.
“Redemption was never sweeter,” he says, smiling.
Younger brother Stephen admits his brother’s successes continually push him to improve. Though the two are competitive, they quickly admit they’ve learned from one another.
“I’ve never beaten my brother,” says Stephen, an incoming sophomore. “But wrestling with him has helped me beat others.” The younger Kwan says he intends to continue sharpening his skills and winning more state titles during his remaining years at Saint James.
While Matt acknowledges his brother could become a four-time high school individual state champion, he continues to have dreams of his own. Matt’s ambition to wrestle in college came closer to reality when he was recruited by Division III New York university earlier in the year. At 133-pounds, he is excited to join the school’s ten other recruits, who hail from states like Pennsylvania, California, and Hawaii. While eager to wrestle, he says his grades are equally important.
“Schoolwork always came first and it will continue to be like that in college,” Matt says.
Though far away, he expects to return for many of brother Stephen’s future matches, hoping to help his younger brother stay focused.
“I want to be here for every state championship he wins after I leave,” Matt says, seriously, before his face softens into a smile. ”More importantly, I want to make sure he remembers who the better brother is.”

STJ was without their sub-state medalist, senior Drew Brantley, who did not play due to illness. Brantley was replaced by senior Rob Chisenhall, who, himself, had been out since March, due to a hand injury. Chisenhall contributed a 77 on Day Two. Senior Frank McGough rounded out the Trojans scoring.
With the state tourney success, the 2011 Trojan team tied with STJ teams in 1994, 1998, 2002, and 2003, for the best golf finish in the school’s history.

lisa (howard) Jenkins and husband Mark live in Montgomery, where she is a self-employed medical transcriptionist. lisa and Mark have a boy and a girl.
slats slaton won a prestigious “Wrangler” award from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in April, for his Decatur, Al ad agency’s work in developing the popular Yellawood TV commercial “cliffhanger” series. He accepted the honor at a black-tie awards ceremony in Oklahoma City, an event attended by Western moviemakers and film stars (including ed Harris and Sam elliott). Slats’ agency, The Slaton Agency, is the marketing agent for Yellawood. Slats received the award for a nine-minute “short” film titled Yella Fella and The Lady from Silver Gulch. The mini-movie won best entry in the Film & Television/Fictional Drama category. The company is in its third season of airing the “cliffhanger” campaign, which can be viewed at www.yellafella.com.
lynn (smith) talkington and husband Scott live in Montgomery, where Scott is an attorney. They have an eighth grader at STJ. “Time flies when you’re having fun,” says lynn. “Classmates, be thinking about what you want to do for the next reunion. Can you believe we have been out of school this many years?”
laura (Vitty) Weaver lives in Perrysburg, Ohio and teaches at the Ohio Virtual Academy. She is married to Dr. David Weaver, a former dentist who is currently Director of the Genomics Core lab at the university of Toledo Health Science Campus. laura says, “I am so amazed at the campus video and appreciate seeing the old campus I attended on Country Club. Saint James is a gem for sure, and I’m proud to be an alumni. I’ve enjoyed reconnecting with classmates on Facebook, from the good old days. It’s great to see the tradition continue at the wonderful new campus. I am currently one of two specialists with the advanced learner Program with the Ohio Virtual Academy. I’ve been teaching at OHVA for five years and we are the largest online public charter school in Ohio. As an Ohio Master Teacher and National Board certified Teacher, I also serve as a mentor and judge for the Master Teacher program. Dave and I reside in Perrysburg, OH.”

steven m. Kean has worked in the City Attorney’s office for the city of Tyler, TX for more than 20 years. He currently serves as Deputy City Attorney. Steve is one of two attorneys in Texas to receive the 2010 Galen Sparks Award at the Texas City Attorneys Association bi-annual meeting. The annual award is given to an assistant city attorney for demonstrated dedication and contributions to the profession.
libby norris has taught in Montgomery Public Schools since 1984. She recently started a business, “Me and My House,” a home organization and planning business.

twyla (Phelps) Williams says, “I have been married to Mike Williams for 28 years and we have lived in Dothan, Al for 22 years. We have two children. Our son Ryan graduated from Troy university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management with a concentration in Marketing. He is employed by Wachovia/Wells Fargo in Dothan. Our daughter Haley attends AuM on basketball and academic scholarships. We will be coming back to Montgomery for all home AuM women’s basketball games. I have been the Director of Communications for the “Yes We Can! Dothan” education movement for two years, which started in a part-time volunteer capacity, but has grown into a full time job. Before that I had been a substitute teacher in Dothan City Schools for 15 years, and a community volunteer. I enjoy working with youth and hoping to make a difference in the public school system.”

Meade, Md. ed says, “Married to lisa for nearly 25 years now....amazing. After twelve assignments around the country, two kids, eleven cars, a dog and a cat, we’re still living the dream! Our son, Burke, is a 2011 senior in high school; he loves soccer, JROTC and Boy Scouts. His dream is to attend either the Air Force, Navy or Coast Guard Academy. Amber ivey lane owns Amber lane Designs, a Mobile art studio where she teaches art to students from “4 to 99.” In addition, Amber’s studio is a gallery for her own work, which uses oils and acrylics in
abstract form. In Feb. Amber donated three pieces of her work to the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business Development Center on South Court St. “It’s an honor to have my work so prominently displayed at the Small Business Development Center,” says Amber, “and it’s especially meaningful because of the opportunity to do art for Montgomery.”

Jeana (Abfalter) nelson is an RN at the Mobile Infirmary Medical Center, and her husband Ben owns Door-N-Pro, also in Mobile. They have two small children, a little boy and girl.
mary catherine (richardson) Phillips is the Director of Communications for The Alabama/West Florida Methodist Conference. Previously, Mary Catherine worked as an account executive with lWT in Montgomery. She is married to Scott Phillips, a designer with the Southern Poverty law Center. They have a Golden Retriever named Champ.
courtney (manning) stodghill and husband Brad live in Trussville and have two children. Courtney is a 2nd Grade teacher with the Birmingham City Schools and Brad is in Sales at Auxilium Pharmaceuticals.

dr. Julia cherry is an assistant professor in New College and biological sciences at The university of Alabama. Her work focuses on the coastal wetlands near the Gulf of Mexico, where she conducted research during last year’s BP oil spill along the Gulf coast.
Will meacham is in insurance sales with The Starke Agency in Montgomery. Married to Sally (edwards) Meacham (’94), they have two children, both students at Saint James. Will is also involved in a brand new business venture in Montgomery: “We are excited to be a part of Midtown Pizza Kitchen along with fellow alum, Patrick Skelton and his partner from the Chop House, Ben Skelley. The menu has some great sub sandwiches, salads, pasta dishes, pizza by the slice (lunch only), and of course whole pizza made from scratch. Swing by Zelda Place to try it out! brent Quinney finished his vascular surgery fellowship at uAB in June. That same month he joined a private vascular surgical practice, Birmingham Vascular Associates, P.C. He and wife Sarah, a neonatal nurse practitioner, have a two-year-old son.

Kristen Kirkland and husband Bill Sherman live in New York, New York. She obtained her undergraduate degree from Oglethorpe university in 2000, her Master’s degree in Psychology from The Graduate Center, City university of New York in 2008, and she completed her PhD in Industrial/
Organizational Psychology in February of 2011. She has worked with Wall Street executives in several firms, including JP Morgan Chase, Merrill lynch, and Credit Suisse, since 2005 in the areas of leadership development and talent
management, and she is now an independent consultant. Bill is the music director for both Sesame Street and The Electric Company. In addition to his Tony and Grammy Awards Bill just won a Grammy Award for his producing role on the In the Heights album and just this year won a 2011 Grammy for What I Am sung by will.i.am of the Black eyed Peas. Bill wrote the music for this song for Sesame Street. Kristen and Bill have one daughter, Maya Willow Sherman, born in Sept. 2010.
sandra (hall) Williams and husband Steve Williams live in Flowery Branch, GA. She is an account service manager with Starbucks Coffee Company and Steve is the Sales Manager with Crane Materials, Inc. Kelley (massey) Zajac is a physical therapist in the Birmingham area. She is married to Jason Zajac, an athletic trainer at Shelby Baptist Medical Center. They have two children.

Jenny (elliott) ballentine is married to Brooks Ballentine. They live in Vestavia, and have one little boy.
Anna (Keene) miller and husband Jay Miller live in Fairhope, Al where she is the Programs Director with the Alabama Coastal Foundation. Jay is a tugboat captain with Seabulk Towing in Mobile.

craig bowman is the Assistant Football Coach at Belhaven university in Jackson, MS. He and wife Claire, a first grade teacher, live in Jackson. They have a son born in July ‘10. Craig says, “We miss our STJ family so much and can’t wait to read about the new and exciting things y’all are doing. We are doing great, and Baby Ben is doing awesome!”
Kathryn (Adams) crisp and husband Mike live in Fort Worth, TX. They have two children.
Vaughan (Jinks) dickson is married to Nathan Andrew Dickson, II. They welcomed a son, Sam, in July, 2010.
holly (hughes) mackle and husband David Mackle live in Birmingham, where David is a realtor with Re/MAX Over the Mountain. They have one child, a baby girl.
courtenay (hylton) morrow is the Family Medicine Resident Physician at the Franklin Square Hospital Center in the Baltimore area. She is married to John Robert Morrow and they have a little girl.
1999
candice blake is an Account executive with WSFA News 12 in Montgomery. Previously, she worked on a gubernatorial campaign and ran a state senate campaign. Candace says: “I have been watching WSFA for the majority of my life. I love the energy—never a dull momnet in TV. What makes this work environment so much fun is the people. I truly adore everyone here. I recently joined a tennis team, playing doubles with Tim, my boyfriend. I enjoy spending time with my collegues. I’m involved in the community as much as possible. I live in Cloverdale and have a Weimaraner, Sally.”
Jeremy burns and his wife Melanie Snell Burns live in Birmingham where Jeremy manages the Regions Greystone Office for Regions Bank and Melanie is a logistics Broker for CH Robinson, Inc. Jeremy graduated from Auburn in 2003 and he and Melanie married in Dec. 2007. Jeremy and Melanie have a brand new baby girl, born in February 2011! Both mom and baby are doing well. Daughter Peyton was 5 lbs. 12 oz. and 19 in. long! In his free time Jeremy plays rugby for the Birmingham Vulcans.
trent ellsworth is the Coordinator for Adventure Programs at Asbury university in Wilmore, KY. He and wife emily, an elementary teacher, are the parents of two young children.
Jacob Kirkland is married to Ryan Freeman Kirkland. They have three children, Grace, lucas, and Alex. Jacob went to Auburn receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Finance and also received a Masters in Business Administration. They reside in Montgomery, where Jacob works as a Division Manger for Forest laboratories, Inc. and Ryan as a processor with Regions Mortgage.
Their oldest daughter, Grace, begins sixth grade this year at Saint James. lucas is at Bear Magnet, while Alex was born in 2010.

christy (spurlin) bice is an environmental scientist with the Alabama Dept. of environmental Management. Married to Josh Bice in Oct. 2005, they have a son who is almost two years old. Christy says: “Most of our time is devoted to work but we also enjoy traveling. Our family including Dixie Daisy, a yellow lab, love spending our weekends near water either at the lake or beach.” Christy coordinates the Groundwater Festivals for Alabama’s fourth graders in addition to her responsibilities with the Nonpoint Source Program with the Alabama Department of environmental Management. Husband Josh is an engineer with HMMA (Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama).
Kimberly (thomason) bond lives in Atlanta where she is a patent attorney with Kilpartick, Townsend & Stockton. She is married to Jason Bryan Bond.
hammond cobb is the CFO of Health Star Chiropractic in Montgomery, where he and wife Candice Warren reside. Candice is a doctor with Health Star Clinic.
billy Furr graduated in May from Boston’s Northeastern university, with a Master’s Degree in Computer Science. He and Renee Therrien, a Boston/Cape Cod native, were married in July. Following graduation Billy will be working as a research associate at a lab on the Northeastern campus for an additional year, as he and his advisor try to obtain funding for a startup firm based on their research project.
michael gallops lives in Pike Road and works in Risk Management with Colonial Insurance Agency. He is married to Jennifer (Sims). Michael graduated from Troy State with a degree in Risk Management and Insurance. After a short period working in GA (on St. Simon’s Island) he moved back to Montgomery in October 2005.
Ann morgan (brendle) graham is a literary specialist for the North Panola School District in Oxford, MS. She is married to O’Keefe Graham II, a developer with Nix/Tann and Associates. Their son Kee was born in April of this year.
Jana (Perry) gwin is married to John Gwin, an Assistant City engineer with the City of Phenix City, Al. Jana is the owner and master esthetician with One eighty Wellness Spa in Auburn, where the couple lives. They have a young daughter, lily.
Whitney rowan lives in Nashville and works for Data Marketing Network, a direct mail company whose clients include BMI, several country music stars’ fan newsletters, diabetes equipment supplier Simplex Healthcare, and Belcourt Cinema. Whitney is a university of Alabama graduate, where she majored in Communications.
meredith (mcghar) marshall works for the Alabama Board of Medical examiners in Montgomery. She was the STJ Varsity Cheerleading sponsor for the ‘07-’08 football and basketball seasons. She is married to Matthew Marshall, an environmental coordinator with the Al Dept. of Wildlife and Fresh Water Fisheries. They have a 1-year-old son, Matthew David.
Katherine (reifenberg) Womack and her husband Kristopher Beau Womack live in Montgomery, where she is a Fine Jewelry Consultant with Ware Jewelers and Kristopher is an attorney.
sallye (Jeffcoat) york is an accompanist and piano teacher at Montgomery Academy. She is married to Chris York, a wholesale nursery/production supervisor at Moore and Davis Nursery in Shorter, Al. The Yorks live in Tuskegee. They welcomed their first child, Vara elizabeth, in June.

Ann (Wilson) Aman is a community resource coordinator with MACOA and a CAbi Independent Sales Consultant. Her husband Doug Aman is in commercial insurance for HRCA. llC. Their son Wilson was born in 2009.
emily (Jones) benton In Jan., emily and husband Jason relocated to the
Birmingham area, where Jason is an engineer with Southern Company. Their daughter Becca was born on Mar. 15, 2011, coming into the world at 7 lbs. 4 oz., and 19 1/2 in. long. emily and Jason also have two Yorkies, Hummer and Caddy.
beth briand is a Clinical Pharmacist, working at Wolfson Children’s Hospital/Baptist Health in Jacksonville, Fl. Beth serves as the Adult internal Medicine Preceptor for the Pharmacy Practice Residency Program at Baptist Hospital and for pharmacy students from South university, university of Florida, and Palm Beach Atlantic university. She also is a Pharmacology Instructor at Nova Southeastern university’s Physician Assistant Program in Jacksonville, and is the primary instructor for uF’s Pharmacy Technician Training Program. She received the Preceptor of
the Year Award from the university of Florida College of Pharmacy for Inpatient experiences and achieved Board Certification in Pharmacotherapy (BCPS).
niko corley Niko is the political director for the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, and wife Sally, is Chief of Staff for Public Service Commissioner Twinkle Cavanaugh. Niko also writes a monthly outdoor column, “Off the Beaten Path,” for Prime Montgomery magazine.
shawn daugherty and Allie (James) Daugherty welcomed a baby girl on June 4, 2011. Shawn and Allie live in Charlotte, NC where he is a financial consultant with ernst & Young and she has been teaching second grade.
carey dePasquale graduated from Auburn university in 2005 with a BSBA in Marketing. She was selected to represent the Atlanta Falcons in the 2009 Pro Bowl in Hawaii. Carey is currently a member of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, a position she’s held since 2009.
Wells robinson is the Chief Clerk for the Montgomery County Probate Court, appointed to that position by Montgomery Probate Judge Reese McKinney, Jr. Prior to his Montgomery appointment Well was an attorney with a Tuscaloosa law firm. He passed the Alabama Bar in Feb. 2011, after graduating with a Juris Doctorate and MBA degree from the university of Alabama in December 2010. Wells and Megan Marie lundgren, of Knoxville, were married in June, 2010. Wells says, “Megan and I are very happy to have the opportunity to return to Montgomery and reconnect with our friends from the Saint James School community.”
Jodie russell lives in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where she works for Jackson Hole Real estate Company. Jodie is engaged to Brent Schaap, who owns a farming and hunting operation in South Dakota, and guides backcountry snowmobile trips in Jackson Hole in the winters, and whitewater trips down the Snake River in the summer. Jodie says, “My life will be getting a whole lot more interesting as I will be traveling back to South Dakota with Brent in the ‘offseasons!’ Can you

Abbie smith works with the traveling nurse program, where she is placed in a variety of ICus across the u.S., for short periods of time. Abbie says the traveling nurse program is expanding to soon include international placements as well.
suzanna Wasserman lives in Pike Road and works for the American Cancer Society as the Volunteer Coordinator for Montgomery and Autauga Counties.

laura (lynch) Ashcom and husband Charles Ashcom live in Huntsville, where she is the Band Director for Westminster Christian Academy and Charles is an electrical engineer.
marshall darneille moved to Denver, CO in 2006 following graduation from Wake Forest to work for CoBank, ACB (an agricultural Credit Bank) and was transferred to CoBank’s Atlanta office in September 2009. Marshall is currently getting an MBA from the university of GA.
mandy (Jones) Johnson is an Assistant District Attorney for the 19th Judicial Circuit (Autauga, elmore, and Chilton counties). She is married to Adrian Johnson who was appointed lowndes Co. District Judge in Dec. 2010.
Kale Kirkland graduated Summa Cum laude from Auburn in 2005, and then enrolled in the university of Mississippi, where he obtained his M.A. in 2008
and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in May 2011. He interned at the Federal Prison in Fort Worth, Texas. Kale began working with the Montgomery firm of Kirkland & King, Clinical and Forensic Psychologists, PC, in August 2011. He is married to Courtney Shannon Kirkland, an Auburn university graduate who teaches, most recently in kindergarten.
hillary (ballant) ryan is a 2006 graduate of Birmingham-Southern College, receiving her BA in english and Creative Writing. She and husband Andrew Ryan live in Birmingham. They welcomed their first child, Catherine, in Feb.
tyler sexton graduated from the university of Alabama in 2006 with a B.S. in Finance. He is a Remarketing Agent in Montgomery with W.R. Taylor & Company, llC. Tyler is married to Tara Gabrielle (Shinholster). Tyler currently coaches the STJ Middle School Boys Basketball team.
cole simon and wife elizabeth live in Birmingham, where he is an airline pilot/Captain for Delta Connection. elizabeth is an architect with live Design group. They have one child, a daughter, named lucy.
2003
Alex howell got his undergraduate degree in Industrial Design from Au and then got his Masters at the university of Central Florida in Interactive entertainment. He is a video game designer, working for eA Sports. Right now he is working on NCAA 2012 as a lead designer and could not be happier. Alex says this is what he always wanted to do and that he is living “the dream” in Orlando.
hunter landrum graduated from the university of Virginia School of law in May and will begin work at Wilmer, Cutler, Pickering, Hale, & Dorr llP in Washington D.C. in the fall. While a uVa law student, Hunter spent a summer working for Defense Secretary Robert Gates at the Pentagon.
haley lucido is an Account executive for Blue Water Broadcasting in Montgomery, encompassing radio stations The Gump 104.9, News Talk 107.9, Q96.1, 97.9 Jamz, and Bama Country 98.9. She previously worked for Montgomery’s Habitat for Humanity and the Ala. Republican Party.
Kelli (sutter) morgan is a Certified Professional Coder with Jackson Thornton & Company in Montgomery, and Matthew is the Assistant Horticulturist for the City of Prattville. They have a daughter named Grayson.
callie (lewis) tubb is married to Stuart Tubb; they live in Decatur, Al. Callie is a client relations technician with Solid earth, Inc. in Huntsville, and Stuart is a relationship manager with Regions Commercial Banking.
miller (goodson) Wallace married Grant Wallace in Aug. 2009 and passed the CPA boards in Jan. 2010. She is an accountant with the Retirement Systems of Alabama, while Grant is an accountant with enterprise Car Rentals. They live in Montgomery.

ted brewer and wife emily live in Anniston where Ted serves in the Army National Guard, fulltime, as a Specialist in Charlie Company 167th Infantry Battalion. Ted says he is scheduled to deploy next April.
elizabeth hard is a public relations specialist with Alabama’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail & Resort Collection. She lives in Birmingham.
brady (holt) harris married Dusty Harris in a May 2010 wedding. She is an accelerated nursing student in the uSA School of Nursing in Fairhope, and Dusty is with the Republic National Distributing Company in Jackson, MS.
Kristy (Keene) lytle married Chris lytle in Dec. 2010 in las Vegas. They live in the Atlanta area. Chris is an engineer with uzun & Case.
guy martin graduated from Jones law School in 2011, and will be married in Aug. After the wedding, Guy will work for a Tuscaloosa law firm.
ethan Whittington moved to Richmond, VA in Mar., where he accepted a promotion with Dixon Marketing, Inc. as the National Account Manager.
reid Williams and wife laura live in Tuscaloosa, where he is a registered nurse at Druid City Hospital. Reid was just accepted to uAB’s Nurse Anesthetist Program.

callie corley is the producer of WSFA-TV 12’s Today in Alabama, the top-rated morning news show in Central and South Alabama. She began working for WSFA in Jan. 2011 and assumed the producer position in May. When she’s not at Channel 12, Callie’s busy designing layouts for Prime Montgomery magazine.
Jordan Kirkland graduated from Auburn university in May of 2009 with a BA in Public Administration. He now resides in Atlanta, and works as an Associate Sales Consultant for Synthes, a surgical implant company that specializes in fracture repair. Jordan is working in their
Craniomaxillofacial (CMF) area, covering accounts in Atlanta, Augusta, Macon, Columbus, Gainesville, and Athens, GA.
Will Pappas graduated from the university of Alabama with a General Business Degree in 2010. He is working in Birmingham, with enterprise Rental Car.

caro louise savage lives in Montgomery. She completed her degree in May and began a job search in the business/marketing field. She is engaged to Buck Jehle (’02) and planning a February 2012 wedding.
2006
rachel Arledge graduated from Appalachian State university with a B.S. in Technical Photography in 2010. She now lives in Frankfort, KY and works for AmeriCorps at Henry County High School as a College Prep Counselor. Rachel plans to attend the university of louisville in the fall of 2011 to get her Master of eD in Counseling.
michael Azar graduated from Auburn university in May 2011 with a B.A. in Radio/Television/Film. In spring 2011, he started his own video production company based in Montgomery. Michael says, “I’ve been interested in videography (cinematography specifically) since about the age of 14. I have always been interested in the way a video camera moves throughout its given space to create a shot for anything from consumer videos to television to full-feature films. My ultimate goal is to be a full-time cinematographer, filming movies on the Hollywood scale. It’s just a matter of time before I get there...”
carmen hollon is teaching first grade at Saint James, beginning in August. Previously, Carmen was a third grade teacher at Daniel Pratt elementary in Prattville.
christina Johnson has been in NYC since Feb. 3, 2011, when she signed on with a casting company. She has been in several television shows and in two movies, a David Chase film and most recently in Men In Black 3. Christina was in the season finale of Gossip Girls, the pilot of Eden (a show picked up by uSA), and the pilot of Prime Suspects (picked up by NBC). She also appears in an episode of Royal Pains.
When she’s not working or auditioning, Christina is a part-time nanny for the daughter of Kristen Kirkland ’96 and Bill Sherman.
sean Zeeck graduated in Dec. 2010 with a BS in Mechanical engineering. He lives in Firestone, CO.
2007
Audrianna Archibald graduated cum laude, with english Departmental Honors, from uAB. With her degree in early Childhood and elementary education, she is working with Teach for America, in Alabama. Audrianna was named the Most Outstanding Student in uAB’s School of education for 2010-11.
Fred Paul graduated from Auburn university in May with a BFA in theatre production/management. Over the summer he is working as the Gift Shop Coordinator for the Texas Shakespeare Festival in Kilgore, TX. In Sept., Fred will start an internship at the Olney Theatre Center in Olney, Maryland, in production management.
2008
clark hankins is a senior majoring in Public Administration and playing soccer for the Virginia Commonwealth university Rams (in Richmond). He is also on the President’s Honor Roll at VCu. Clark will begin working on his master’s degree in Public Administration this fall.
Kat Jackson played two years of varsity tennis at Birmingham Southern, and also made the Academic All Conference there. After Kat changed her major to nursing, she transferred to the university of Alabama in Dec. Kat was selected for an internship at Children’s Hospital for the summer ’11, to work in nursing with the Burn unit. Only 50 students were selected from the 475 medical and nursing student applicants. Kat is a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority at Alabama.
christopher Johnson lives in Auburn, where he is a student at Au.
Will martin was selected as a member of the Jasons, an elite honor society at the university of Alabama. The Jasons recognizes upcoming senior men who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship, leadership, and character.
2009
martha-claire Jones attends Auburn university, Montgomery where she is majoring in english. For fun, she’s keeping up with her music and playing her alto sax in a local band. She is also very involved with improving Montgomery’s cultural atmosphere.
2010
mazie bryant just completed her freshman year at the university of Alabama where she is majoring in Journalism. She is a member of Chi Omega sorority and writes for the Crimson White. Over the summer she worked as an intern for Prime Montgomery, writing news items for the monthly magazine, taking pictures, and updating the publication’s online status postings. She also wrote for the 2011 edition of Columns.
Kelley Jackson attends the univ. of Alabama, where she was selected to join Phi eta Sigma, a Freshman National Honor Society. A Dean’s list student, she is a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Kelley’s major is Meeting and event Planning. During summer ’11 she is working at Wynlakes Country Club, with the club’s event planning department. She will also be doing an event planning internship in spring ‘12 with Disney World.
matt mardis was one of approximately 20 students selected to participate in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute National Genomics Research Initiative at uAB (Phage explorations). Only 12 universities nationwide have a similar program. Matt says the work “...involves intense research of bacteria.” Info about the program can be found online. Matt has straight A’s (both semesters) and volunteers at Children’s Hospital or a local nursing home nearly every weekend.
