Such behaviors are negatively impacting Jewish continuity — and, yes, it is a big deal. I just finished an enormous research project about engaging families with young children through Shabbat services. I was startled by how many synagogue leaders are investing time and money in order to attract young families — and then these families are alienated by members of the community. In interviews, I heard about how it was the seemingly small details that dictate a family’s decision to participate. For example, a stool in the bathroom, so children could reach the sink, was an authentic signal that the community recognizes and accommodates the needs of young children. A shush from a congregant when a child whispered too loudly at services, however, felt like a harsh judgement — and, ultimately, an indication to a family that their presence was not warmly welcomed. Too many people are being turned off to synagogue life because a vocal minority of members are (unintentionally, I think) sending a message that they are unwelcome. Welcoming others, along with the noises they may make, is an easy call to action. There is no money required, no board approval to petition. All you have to do is stop with any and all attempts to control other people’s behavior in synagogue that are anything less than entirely respectful, kind and supportive. Do it because you can remember a time when you were a vulnerable member of the community and didn’t perfectly align with the expectations of the others. Do it because the Torah teaches us to “love your neighbor as yourself.” Do it because the Talmud says, “all of Israel is responsible for one another.” Seriously, Stop with the Shushing!

The following is an excerpt from an article on kveller.com, by Emily Aronoff Teck, sent to us by a CoM member.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and bet that, whenever you were most recently at synagogue, you witnessed someone shushing, eye-rolling, audible sighing, or glaring at another person during services.

And if you have small kids, I’m going to take this a step further and bet that this behavior was directed at you or your offspring.

Shushing isn’t kind and it isn’t respectful. And the consequences can be dire. It seems to me that most of the people doing the shushing hardly think about the choice that they are making — but I can confidently assert that the ones being shushed are deeply affected by these expressions.

Do it because the Torah teaches us to “love your neighbor as yourself.”

Do it because the Talmud says, “all of Israel is responsible for one another.”

Seriously, Stop with the Shushing!

Do it because babies are adorable, and you want them to return because your synagogue can’t sustain itself financially unless it attracts new members.

Go ahead and choose one of these reasons, or find another that resonates more. But whatever you do, motivate yourself to show respect and kindness, even in moments of distraction or frustration.

Emily Aronoff Teck, Ed.D. is a progressive educator who seeks to increase and improve the ways that the Jewish community invites young children and families to explore, discover and celebrate joyful Judaism.

Dedicated gardeners Sallie Goodman, Tamara Norman and Diane Fogel spent four hours in early May cleaning up the gardens at CoM. They trimmed hydrangeas, weeded flower beds, trimmed the spirea bushes, raked leaves and cut back the tall grass at the front of the building. These efforts were in preparation for planting Good Neighbor Day flowers from Wenke Greenhouses.

The CoM gardening crew again leapt into action to plant the donated flowers from Wenke’s on May 25. Sara Amy, Rae Lee Howard and team members Judy Seyburn and Diane Fogel participated. Sara and Rae Lee joined the team to contribute their efforts in preparation for Stella Amy’s Bat Mitzvah.

We planted flowers around the sign in front of the building and the cement planter. Pots of flowers were added to Shirley’s Garden and the welcoming big blue planters at the entrance were enhanced with orange sun-loving impatiens.

Thank you to Rod for getting our materials ready and for an unexpected run to the hardware store for more potting soil. Thank you to garden chairperson, Diane Fogel, for organizing the team.

Be prepared to be dazzled!

Hadassah NewsWHO Director Praises Hadassah Medical CenterWorld Health Organization (WHO) Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus arrived in Israel over the weekend for a surprise visit and toured Hadassah Medical Center’s Ein Kerem campus.

Together with Health Ministry Director General Moshe Bar Siman Tov, Ghebreyesus toured the hospital’s pediatric hemato-oncology ward, speaking with parents, patients, the medical staff, nurses, and social workers, who told him about the challenges they face.

Summarizing his visit, Ghebreyesus said, “I am amazed by the level of dedication and the staff ’s impressive devotion to the patients, as well as by the continuous thought which goes into treatment. [The thought is] not just about the sick children, but also about their families. I am impressed by the level of involvement of every staff member in the patients’ treatment. Hadassah is proof that medical treatment creates a bridge between people and a center of hope,” he said.

Full Circle Campaign: 360 Degrees of HealingPlans are underway to completely reimagine and renovate the iconic Round Building at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem in Jerusalem, ensuring HMO’s place as a world-renowned health care leader and global destination for advanced care, continued innovation and cutting-edge research.

Bringing Lifesaving Spinal Surgery to EthiopiaA team of Hadassah Medical Organization doctors embarked on a groundbreaking humanitarian effort: bringing complex spinal surgery procedures to Ethiopia for the first time. During their medical mission to the northern Ethiopian city of Mekelle, they performed several lifesaving spinal surgeries. “These cases were so bad that if we wouldn’t have operated on these children, at least half of them would be dead by next year,” reported HMO spinal surgeon Dr. Josh Schroeder.

K tchen KvellersWe are taking a short breather from reviewing how/why of the Mitbach (Kitchen) policies. Our chat this month is focusing on other ways you can support the Mitbach.

Thank you to Rabbi Szczepanski for conducting the first segment of the Mashgiach class on kashrut. Two more segments will follow: 1. Mashgichim at CoM 2. Health and Safety in the CoM Mitbach.

Please stay tuned for class times and other details.

As Rabbi Szczepanski mentioned, keeping kosher and following some particular food safety protocols are great for a personal home kitchen. However, a kitchen that serves the public in any way needs to follow strict mandates regarding food safety standards.

Our CoM kitchen is a sacred place where both kashrut and food safety standards are maintained. Your kitchen co-chairs have been charged with ensuring all users will become familiar with and follow these standards.

Operation Sparkle, our kitchen cleanup event, will be scheduled for a time this summer to address the steam table hallway areas and the pan storage closet.

As our CoM kitchen storage space is extremely limited, before dropping off or storing surplus napkins/cutlery/cups, please consult the kitchen co-chairs. They will advise where to leave the donation.

Please consider making a financial donation to the Kitchen/Kiddush/Oneg Fund to provide revenue to purchase needed items. We appreciate your generosity to CoM’s sacred space.

Consider sponsoring a Kiddush:

• The regular Kiddush consists of challah, herring, gefilte fish, cookies, juice, wine, schnapps and tea. If there are yummy “surprises” to be found in the refrigerator, these are offered also. Cost is $50, with the hosts acknowledged from the Bima. No prior announcement is made.

• An enhanced Kiddush would include all of the above with the addition of cottage cheese, fruit, egg salad, bagels and shmears. Cost is $150, with the hosts acknowledged from the Bima. No prior announcement is made.

The Committee is willing to shop and prepare with at least a week’s notice. This assumes the regular attendees, 20-25 people, would partake. This is not to be construed as a catered event, whereby additional people would be invited to celebrate a Simcha.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please ask. Let’s work together on finding solutions. Thank you - Gail Brot and Joanne Simon, your Kitchen Co-Chairs, [email protected]

Food and Toiletries CollectionTo help the poor and hungry, Judaism places great importance on the giving of charity. The Hebrew word for charity (tzedakah) literally means justice. In the Jewish tradition, tzedakah is not an act of condescension from one person to another who is in need. It is the fulfillment of a mitzvah, a commandment to a fellow human being who has equal status before God.

Although Jewish tradition recognizes that the sharing of our resources is also an act of love - as the Torah states, "Love thy neighbor as thyself" (Lev.19:18), it emphasizes that this act of sharing is an act of justice. This is to teach us that people who are in need are entitled to our love and concern. They too are human beings created in the Divine image; they too have a place and a purpose within God's creation.

Toiletries and non-perishable dry groceries (no glass containers please) are donated to Loaves and Fishes, Ministry with Community, or Portage Community Outreach Center (PCOC) food pantry, and the YWCA.

There is a new collection box in the synagogue lobby. We are looking for a young family with children to take on the responsibility of delivering the collected items to the appropriate agency. This is a great opportunity for our children to learn about the Jewish concepts of tzedakah, mitzvoth, and justice.

If your family can help by delivering collected items monthly, please contact: Tamara Norman ([email protected]) or Michelle Angel ([email protected]).

Recommended grocery items include canned beans, canned tuna, canned or boxed soups, canned fruits (low sugar) and vegetables (low sodium), bagged or boxed rice, whole grain pasta, cooking oil, cereals, healthy snacks with

low sugar and low sodium—granola bars, fruit snacks and trail mix.

Toiletries and self-care items include bar soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, body lotion, combs and hairbrushes.

We no longer collect eyeglasses. Please bring eyeglasses directly to an Rx Optical store or the Oshtemo Library.
