The ETXexpress® Solution
ETXexpress® is the Module concept for the new open Standard
COM Express™ defined by the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group.
The module offers complete, multimedia-capable computing cores for high-
level applications and high performance for your next generation product.
The modules are highly integrated off-the-shelf building blocks based on
PCI-Express® Bus architecture that plug into custom-made, application-
specific carrier boards.
PCI-Express® is the primary data path for upcoming x86 based systems.
Non PCI-Express® components such as PCI plug-in cards can still be
supported with the PCI 2.1. 32 Bit Interface, as ETXexpress® COMs Type 2

The Kontron OM Series of ATCA open modular plat-
forms are pre-integrated, pre-validated and pre-
tested to accelerate new application designs for
faster market deployment. As a carrier-grade,
high-density platform, Kontron integrated plat-
forms offer TEMs and NEPs exceptional transaction
processing performance with low latency and High
Availability (HA) in redundant N+1 configurations.
Kontron integrated platforms are ideal for a full
range of GbE to 10GbE applications found in exi-
sting wireless-wireline and IMS networks. Some
examples include Session (Call Servers, Media
Gateway Controllers, IMS-SCSF, HLR/HSS) and
Media (High throughput media processing for
IPTV, Content Adaptation, Content Filtering).

Even though designed for telecommunication
applications, the application areas for MicroTCA
go far beyond. Basically all application areas
combine following requirements:

Among these applications are communication
technologies and image processing in the milita-
ry and medical area, Professional Mobile Radio,
multiprocessing systems in industrial automati-
on, as well as avionic servers. Other areas of
application include infotainment, video surveil-
lance and information systems.
The MicroTCA specification today supports mana-
ged systems consisting of processors, DSP,
Network Service Processors, storage, line cards,
I/O cards and RF modules. Among the benefits of
MicroTCA is the flexibility with respect to inter-
connecting AMCs over PCI-Express, Ethernet
(1GbE and 10GbE), Serial Rapid IO and SAS/SATA.

AdvancedMCs: In order to ensure adaptation
to various applications, a corresponding mez-
zanine concept was developed the course of
ATCA standardization: Advanced Mezzanine
Cards AdvancedMC. The new AdvancedMC spe-
cification (defined by the PICMG committee)
adds some important technical innovations to
the PMC model (PCI Mezzanine Card) in order
to achieve, among other advances, carrier-
grade „five nines“ of availability at carrier
level. AdvancedMCs are flexible, powerful and

Rear Transition Modules
All of Kontron‘s CompactPCI CPU boards can be used with Rear Transition
Modules (RTM) to access to the boards‘ I/O from the back of the system,
therefore easing the system‘s serviceability (with no cables plugged to the
boards). RTMs can interface to I/Os such as VGA, serial ports, Ethernet
ports, SCSI, USB, keyboard/mouse, IDE, fl oppy and others.

Additionally, new switch-fabric architectures, such as the PICMG 2.16
packet switched backplane, increase system availability by eliminating
single points of failure in board interconnectivity. PICMG 2.16 is an exten-
sion of the PICMG 2.x family of specifications. PICMG 2.16 provides a
standard for the implementation of a packet-based switching architecture
(based on Ethernet) on top of CompactPCI.

PICMG 1.3 industrial standard addresses exactly the lack and as well as offering
modern standard interfaces on the edge-connector. So based on PICMG 1.3 system,

The ePCI standard (PICMG 1.2) was adopted by the PICMG Consor tium in 2002.
By removing the ISA legacy and retaining the widely used full size and half size formfactors,
new flexibility in functionality and system-design is offered.
Kontron’s half size ePCI products currently implement one standard 32 bit PCI bus running at
33 MHz offering the same functionality and performance as the majority of existing PICMG

The Kontron basic motherboard is a new product line with a focus on
performance and price. This new line offers longevity of 2-3 years, less
complex/more basic features, faster release at the release of chipset
and of course Kontron quality and support.
The KT780/ATX is the first board in Kontron‘s new basic motherboard line.
The new integrated graphics processor (IGP) is based on ATI RV610 which
supports DirectX 10 and it will incorporate: dual display, integrated DVI/
HDMI, external and internal TMDS and Displayport functionality through
external PCI-Express x16 card.
