B.3. SEWAGE B.3.1 FAMSYSTEM SEWAGE PACKAGE PLANTS The Famsystem technology offers small to medium sewage plants using plastic, fibreglass and concrete materials as required by the application. Containerised plants now also available. Proven technology and long term experience. From single house units up to plants for 2 Megalitres per day. We offer design and installation of the sewage plants as per requirements. B.3.2 MOVING BED REACTORS Using submerged moving biofill, this system is much smaller than the activated sludge system in terms of size. The system can also be used to increase the capacity of existing activated sludge plants, solving capacity problems in many areas. Also used for the removal of COD from industrial effluent streams. Imported proven technology, local manufacture. B.3.3.SIYAGEZA PORTABLE TOILETS A full range of fibreglass portable toilets is now available from the basic construction unit to the more elaborate VIP toilets. HISTORY The company was founded in 1994 by Mr. Juan van Kerckhoven in association with Mr. Harold Hook. Both had extensive experience in plastics and fiberglass As a chemical engineer Mr. van Kerckhoven also has extensive project and process design experience in the field of chemical plant. May 1994 : the first employee was employed to install certain plastic lines at one of the clients. This employee Mr. Ernest Matlala now controls the factory as Factory Manager. In 1995 the office is moved to Science Park, Kelvin where the workshop at this stage some 100 sq.m was situated. In 1996 Mr. Hook passed away. During the period of 1994 the company grew and the factory space increased from 100m2 to over 1800m2 and the office space increased from 10m2 to some 150sq.m. In 1996 an association was set up to allow the company to manufacture and market smaller sewage plants In 1997 Mr. Peter Prinsloo was employed as a chemical engineer to handle the various chemical projects including scrubbers, bulk installation and acid dilution plants. Mr. John Kohler, previously with AECI and Sasol, joined the company to set up an ISO quality system and we received approval and rating in 2004. In 2003 the current premises in Edenvale were purchased by an associate company and the facilities of the company were increased to allow for further growth. 2004 : 25.1% of the ownership of the company was purchased by Mr. Stephen Makete in order for the company to have the correct BEE credentials. Mr. Makete is still with the company and is involved with general management with specific interest in the development of the staff in the factory as well as certain marketing projects. In 2005 the turnover of the company surpassed the R20 million mark and further growth was expected in the various markets including the sewage market. In 2006 the total number of people employed rose over 50 and reached 62 during the yearly get together for the 10 yearly award ceremony where employees with 10 years

service are honoured. At that stage a total of 10 employees had 10 years or more service.

In 2008 The total number of employees had further grown to over 75 based on growth of all areas. Turnover was increased to over R30million per year including some export projects In 2010 : Juan van Kerckhoven moves to Somerset West to investigate the market for sewage plants in the Western Cape. Dion Simonato is appointed as General Manager. Famsystems obtains level 3 BEE rating.

FIBREGLASS PRODUCTION The fiberglass workshop has produced many fibreglass products over the years including tanks, scrubbers, launders, ducting and other specialised fibreglass products as required by the industry. Products are designed in accordance with the latest specifications and using materials that suit the final duty. As chemical engineers FAMSYSTEMS can offer specialised advice as to materials of construction to ensure that the final product gives the required life span. This prevents failure of the products or even regular internal delamination which is experienced often in the industry. The fibreglass factory staff has been with the company for a long time to ensure that quality is of the highest standard. Internal controls ensure that this is maintained at all times. FIBREGLASS TANKS Over the years FAMSYSTEMS has completed many fiberglass tanks for all sections of industry. Of importance is the ability to evaluate applications and advise on the optimum system of resins with or without thermoplastic liners. Examples

- PVDF lined HF and nitric tanks replacing failed tanks, now in operation for almost 10 years

- PVC lined conical tanks replacing tanks that failed after 18 months now in operation for 8 years.

corrosion barrier does not delaminate resulting in high re-lining costs.

In the search for simpler Quality procedures, special systems were developed to make communication better resulting in improved quality of all fiberglass work. FAMSYSTEMS designs and manufactures up to 100m3 in capacity. Design basis is normally BS4994 which is internationally accepted as a standard for these tanks.

FAMSYSTEM SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANTS

The FAMSYSTEM Sewage Systems will treat effluent and sewage producing water in accordance with the Department of Water Affairs Specification of 5 April 1962, R553, General Standard or Special Standard. There are various designs available from single house plant units to plants with flows of over 2 Ml/day. Each design is standard in principle but is adapted to the application. This allows low cost, quick delivery and long trouble free operating life. Applications are small developments, police stations, hotels, border posts, long term construction sites and many others, As the system is completely nature friendly and produces no smell, it is also ideal for developments in the new Eco-tourism being considered throughout Africa. FRANK FLOWMETER RANGE FRANK FLOWMETER RANGE The FRANK plastic flowmeters have been used in South Africa for many years, and have proven to be of the highest quality at reasonable prices.

FAMSYSTEMS offers full advice on the sizes, material and special operating conditions required. The new DFM range has been expanded to include the old M23 units as well as the longer flowmeters supplied into the world market. The Frank range can now be used to offer replacements to most typesof flowmeters already installed.

DFM RANGE Measuring tubes available in Trogamid or PVC as well as Polysulfon and PVDF for special applications.. Flowmeters are supplied as a standard with PVC unions but special threaded or flanged connections can be fitted. Ends in PP, PVDF or galvanised steel are available on request.

AUTOMATION

Flowmeters can be fitted with up to two limit switches to indicate min/max flow. The Z51 Reed switch chain will give an output of 4 – 20mA for full control purposes or input into computers, without for an expensive additional relay or transmitter.

FRANK PRESSURE CONTROL RANGE

The FRANK plastic pressure control valves and other equipment have been used in South Africa for many years, and have proven to be of the highest quality at reasonable prices. FAMSYSTEMS offers full advice on the sizes, materials and special operating conditions required. PRESSURE CONTROL VALVES Frank offers the following valve range covering a wide range of applications. In all cases the housing is manufactured from PVC, PP or PVDF to cover all possible corrosive duties. In All cases the control mechanisms are protected from corrosive

attack by an EPDM or Teflon diaphragm.

V86: used as relief valve or as pressure maintaining valve. Available in 400kPa and 1000kPa pressure ranges for better control. Sizes from 15NB to 100NB.

V82 pressure reducing valve maintains the outlet pressure at an even value for feed to sprays, instruments etc. A pressure gauge protected by a chemical diaphragm indicated the out pressure.

V786 is the more complex version of the V86, with a much flatter curve so that the pressure increase is smaller for large flows.

V782 is of similar design as the V786 but control the outlet pressure. CHEMICAL GUARD FO PRESSURE GAUGES Again available in PVC, PP or PVDF this chemical guard protects standard pressure gauges and pressure switches from chemical attack. Inexpensive when compared with similar Stainless Steel units. SPECIAL VALVES

V91, air relief valves in sizes 15NB to 80NB in PVC, PP, and PVDF. V95, vacuum relief valve for closed vessels in sizes as the V91. V140, all plastic float level valve to maintain level in constant head tanks. V251, flow restrictor valve. Needle valve with adjustment screw covered by a

threaded cap to reduce possibility of the operator changing settings.

KIRCHNER FLOWMETER RANGE The company Kirchner has been manufacturing flowmeters for over 30 years and have established themselves as a company supplying high quality instrumentation at reasonable costs and often specially adapted to the client’s requirements. RA60 / RA65 and RA77 RANGE This range of flowmeters has a borosilicate glass tube installed in a steel- or plastic housing. Because of the simplicity of design the flowmeters are economical and long lasting, requiring no maintenance.

FA60/FA65 RANGE This range is the flanged version of the above, but includes some larger units as well.

RA87/FA87 RANGE This range has the same low rates as the above table but the outer tube is manufactured from stainless steel and the unit is not supplied with unions as a standard. If required, unions can be added as an extra. KD77 RANGE OF SMALL FLOWMETERS This range is suitable for gases or liquids and can be supplied with a special needle valve if required. Maximum flow range from 100 cc/min to 100l/min for gases and 25cc/min to 270l/min for liquids. Materials: brass, stainless, PVC, Teflon, Hastelloy and others.

SPECIAL FLOWMETER RANGE TYPE SGM For higher pressures, higher temperatures or dangerous fluids, the use of glass is not recommended. Kirchner type SGM is a flowmeter where the float movement is transmitted via a magnetic coupling to a dial for flow indication. The absence of glass makes this flowmeter very safe for all operating conditions.

TYPE PRALL This flowmeter use a movable flap to measure the flow through a pipe. Being an insertion type unit it requires little space and can be installed in any direction. The movement of the flap is transferred to a dial using a magnetic coupling. The Prall unit is available in sizes up to 600NB and flows of up to 1000 m3/h of water and over 4500m3/h of air can be measured. In these larger sizes, the Prall is the least expensive flowmeter available on the market. A special unit without flow indicator but with a flow switch fitted is available for the protection of pumps or processes.

TYPE STAU Another way to measure larger flows is through an orifice type. Using an orifice in the main pipe, a smaller glass flowmeter can be used to indicate large flows. Kirchner can supply materials to suit all applications and sizes from50NB to 400NB are available for both liquids and gases. AUTOMATION All flowmeters can be fitted with up to limit switches to indicate min/max flow or transmitters with 4 – 20mA output for full control.

TECNIUM HORIZONTAL PLASTIC PUMPS

Tecnium, Barcelona, Spain, has been manufacturing plastic pumps for over 40 years. This extensive experience has been applied to a complete range of pumps using PP, PVDF as well as other special materials. The range of horizontal pumps includes:

Type BN: a pump designed to the internationally acceptable Din standard. The range includes metal reinforcing of the pump casing, back pull out design, various seal arrangements. Flows over 100m3/h and discharge pressures of 1000kPa can be handled.

Type BVC: same long coupled pump as the BN type, but with flanged motor, requiring no baseplate.

Type BH: close-coupled version of the

above pump, to reduce overall capital cost.

Type BX: smaller close-coupled pump without steel reinforcement for the flow rates up to 25m3/h and maximum discharge head of 25m.

Type TM: magnetically driven pumps for applications where mechanical seals are not possible. The range covers flow rates up to 30 m3/h and 25m discharge head.

Some of the special design characteristics of the Tecnium pump are shown in the enclosed sectional drawing of the BN type pump:

A. The impeller has a strong internal mechanical core, which transmits all torque to the shaft via a standard shaft-key design. This reduces stress in the plastic material and improves operating life, especially under fluctuating temperatures.

B. The mechanical seal is installed without causing strain on the plastic backplate of the pump. This is done by a special metal support incorporated in the metal casing design. As this support is not in contact with the liquid, it offers extra strength in this area and reduces movement.

C. A replaceable shaft sleeve with O-ring sealing arrangement for easier

maintenance. D. Impeller cap will seal the front end of the impeller under all circumstances. E. The impeller is fixed on the shaft and requires no adjustment. It is not affected in

case of dry running. F. Full range of mechanical seals available.

TECNIUM PLASTIC VERTICAL SUMP PUMPS

Tecnium, Barcelona Spain, has been manufacturing plastic pumps for over 40 years. This extensive experience has been applied to a complete range of pumps using PP, PVDF, GRP as well as other special materials. The range of vertical sump pumps includes:

Type BA: Cantilevered shaft with single bearing support, suitable up to 32NB.

Type BT: Cantilevered shaft with double bearing support. This pump is suitable for flows over 400m3/h and discharge pressure up to 1000kPa. Depth normally around 1200mm.

In all cases the pumps are designed in such a manner that no metal parts will be in contact with the liquid. The pumps are thus ideally suited to corrosive duties. The cantilevered pumps are particularly suitable for liquids containing solids, as they have no seals or supports, which could wear down in time. The cantilevered pumps also have reasonable NPSH values, so that suction pipes can be installed. For the submerged shaft supports in the types BL and BR, the combination of a ceramic inner sleeve and PTFE outer bush ensures good operating life. The Tecnium range of sump pumps is not only being used in chemical sumps, but also as process pumps in tanks where the installation of a submerged pump improves operating conditions as well as overall safety of the plant.

TECNIUM VERTICAL PLASTIC PUMPS

(SEALLES) The Tecnium BVS range of vertical pumps offers special advantage for the process design engineer as well as the maintenance team:

The pump has no mechanical seal .

Due to the absence of a shaft seal there is no area where friction can cause problems during operation of the pump.

The pump can run dry for as long as necessary. The absence of the seal is obtained through the use of a specially designed back-impeller, which reduces the amount of liquid that passes the back-end of the pump. The small amount of liquid that passes the back-end is collected in a chamber and is returned by gravity to the container from where the pump is pumping. To allow the liquid to be returned, the pump has to be installed at the maximum liquid level in the tank. Various installation arrangements are possible, depending on the process conditions existing. Please ask for advice in this regard. The BX range of pump is available for smaller pumps up to flow rates over 200m3/h and 1 000kPa discharge pressure.

TECNIUM CORROSION RESISTANT FANS

In association with Tecnium, Famsystems offers a large range of corrosion resistant fans. Tecnium manufacturers the impellers and all housing are manufactured locally for improved service and reduced cost. The Tecnium fans are suitable for most corrosive applications and include use of fibreglass, PVC, PP, PVDF and PTFE to cover all duties. The range covers applications from 100 m3/h of airflow up to 100 000m3/h with a pressure range up to 7kPa. This makes the fans suitable for all chemical industries, paper industries, all wet

scrubbing duties, plating and pickling plants, food industry and many more. Locally fans have been installed on many applications already and have proven to be reliable. Both direct drive and belt driven units are available and the choice depends on the process conditions.
