In January 2019, Nervous Waters opened its newly built Suindá Lodge. Suindá is a dorados’ fishermans’ dream. Strategically located near the town of Itatí, in the province of Corrientes. The region houses one of the most productive sections of the Upper Paraná River, a clear-water fishery that consistently kicks out good numbers of monster sized Dorado. Add world-renowned Pira Lodge to your adventure and explore even more of Argentina’s best dorado waters on the same itinerary.

WHY A COMBO TRIP?

Dorado, due to how they react to seasonal conditions, are one of those species that requires patience and planning. By booking a combo trip, you increase your odds of catching more fish. You also broaden your fishing horizons, seeing new riverscapes, learning new techniques, and exploring an array of prime dorado habitats. These trips are not only educational, they’re the makings of a true adventure.

This one-of-a-kind pairing, allows anglers six full fishing days at our two premier Dorado operations: three days on the clear Upper Paraná out of Suindá Lodge, known for its monster dorados, coupled with another three days on the diverse waters of the Iberá Marshland out of Pira Lodge, known for its numbers. The seven-night program gives guests the ability to rotate lodges in the middle of the week. Begin at Suinda, and then transfer to Pira. Or vice versa. No matter where you decide to start, you’ll fish two of the most consistent environments for Golden Dorado that Argentina has to offer.

Where the combination takes place?Pirá Lodge

• Located in the Corrientes Province, in the middle of the 3,000,000 acre Iberá Wetlands Reserve.

• The Iberá Wetlands is a vast system of clear creeks, flowing rivers, shallows, and lakes.

• Sight casting opportunities are available in the marshes of the Ibera marshes, as well as blind casting on for the big fish on the river gives anglers are variety of ways of pursing these beautiful Dorado.

Suindá Lodge

• Located on the upper Paraná system also in the Corrientes Province, this clear waters fishery offers exceptional sight-fishing opportunities for huge Dorado, as well as Pirá Pitá and Pacú on dry fly.

• The river here marks the border between Argentina and Paraguay.

• This section of the Paraná flows clear along beautiful fishy banks, sandbars, rocks and islands that create deltas and smaller “riachos” (streams).

• This beautifully built, sprawling estancia/lodge is located in plush fields of the virgin wilderness marsh.

• A beautiful 20 meter pool sits right off the bar and veranda, a wonderful place of a midday dip.

Suindá Lodge

• Capacity: 10 rods - 10 guests

• Stilted nine feet above ground, beautiful wood cabins are perched high on a bluff, offering soaring views of the sprawling river below and natural jungle around.

• The eco-property includes three spacious, two-bedroom “cabañas”, with private bathrooms. Wooden footbridges conveniently connect each room to the main lodge.

• Main Lodge: Boasts a local wood Bar, fully stocked, a comfortable stylish living and dining area along with a fly tying area.

• Fresh water plunge pool is right in front of the main lodge, a great place to enjoy a beverage.

Fishing at Suindá takes place on the upper Paraná River. The “Río Paraná” is the second longest river in South America, next to the sprawling Amazon. We fish a clear-flowing stretch of water where the river borders Paraguay, flanked by jungle expanses on both its edges. You’ll explore this exciting fishery on 21-foot boats specifically designed for two anglers to fish simultaneously. After the engines are cut, you’ll drift the structure-rich shorelines of the Río Paraná, casting to sunken logs, in and around boulders, and across clear sandbars. We mostly fish streamers on floating lines, which makes for unforgettable visual takes.

Paraná River dorado average 5 to 20 pounds, but there are also fish pushing 30+ pounds. When the conditions are right, you’ll wade clear sandbars where Sabalo baitfish school up in big numbers and Dorado come to ambush their prey. This is the ultimate sight-fishing experience, where landing monsters is a real possibility. As the sun sets on the horizon, you might find yourself swinging big flies through productive mid-river rock gardens. The hard takes on the swing are some you’ll remember always.

In addition to dorado, we also fish for Pirá Pita on light tackle (6- and 7-weight rods). This unique species is pound for pound one of the stronger fish we catch on big dry flies and smaller mouse patterns. Our Pirá Pita, on average, weigh 2 to 10 pounds. Pacú also abound here, and most of the time we sight-cast for them with “fruit imitation” flies. They also take on the surface, and they can run from 5 to 15 pounds (even heavier if you’re lucky).

FISHING AT PIRÁ LODGE

Fishing at Pira takes place on a pristine 3-million acre ecological preserve, one of the largest natural freshwater reservoirs on the planet. The water here runs clear. This is the only Dorado fishing program in the world where you’ll fish from a Hell’s Bay flats skiff with a guide on the push-pole.

As far as the fishing goes, the area can be divided into two hemispheres: the headwaters of the Marsh, and the downstream stretches of the Corrientes River. You’ll fish both. The Marsh comprises a labyrinth-like system of streams, lagoons, and side-channels. We typically fish from the deck of the skiff, one angler at a time. When water conditions are low, there can be great wade-fishing opportunities in this area as well. On the Corrientes River, we often “swing” flies from the skiff with sink-tips, which is an effective, fun technique. Most of the fishing, however, is done with floating lines.

The average-size fish ranges from 5 to 15 lbs. Larger 15- to 25-pound dorado are also landed every season. We fish a variety of flies, from mouse patterns to streamers. This spectacular ecosystem is brimming with wildlife, and it’s also one of the most productive spawning environments for dorado in all of Argentina.

At both locations, your boats and guides will be waiting for you at the dock, gassed up and ready to go every morning.

TRAVEL LOGISTICS

Combining these two dorado fishing destinations is easy. Whether you begin your adventure at Pirá or Suindá, a series of short flights and short drives is all it takes to complete the merger. Drive time between the lodges is 4 hours.

EXAMPLE: Assuming you start at Pirá, then finish at Suindá:

1) Fly from Buenos Aires to Pirá Lodge on a one-way private charter. It’s a 2-hour nonstop flight from BA to Pira’s landing strip. Walk to the lodge upon arrival.

2) After completing your fishing days at Pirá take a ground transfer to Suindá. 4 -hr drive.

3)Depart Suindá via a 1-hr return flight back to Buenos Aires, from either:

A)Corrientes (CNQ) airport – 45-min drive from the lodge.

B)Resistencia (RES) airport – 1-hour and 30-minute drive.

*Note: Resistencia (RES) and Corrientes (CNQ) are neighboring airports, both located close by.
