Sheffield calling!

Every year our current student ambassadors try to call each and every one of our offer holders to chat about their experiences of living and studying in Sheffield.

This is an opportunity to talk to someone who has recently been through the process of moving to University. It’s a great chance to ask them any questions you may have about Sheffield and University life.

The feedback we’ve had from these calls in the last couple of years has been excellent, so we really hope that you also find speaking with one of our students useful.

Opt out of a telephone call If you would prefer not to receive a phone call from a current student then please let us know: www.sheffield.ac.uk/undergraduate/optout

No 1 Students’ Union in the UK for nine years running in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey (2009-17)

Every university in the UK has a Students’ Union. Its role is to provide you with independent support and representation, activities, services and entertainment during your time at university. When you become a student, you automatically become a member of our Students’ Union – your University of Sheffield ID card acts as your membership card. You’ll be joining a Students’ Union that’s been awarded ‘best in the UK’ for the last nine years running. Our locationWe recently invested £20m in a refurbishment, filling a contemporary new building with places to eat, drink, shop, meet friends, and seek support services. Located in the heart of the campus, the Students’ Union is the centre of student life, with over 400 societies and sports clubs. There’s always a diverse range of events on offer – from talks to live performances, and club nights to film screenings: sheffieldsu.com/get-involved Give it a GoOur award-winning Give it a Go programme is full of one-off introductory activities and events. Try new things, learn a skill, make new friends and visit different attractions in the UK – you don’t need any experience to take part and you can try out as many activities, sports and courses as you like: sheffieldsu.com/give-it-a-go The Student Advice CentreThis is a free and confidential service. Tuition fee loansMost full-time home fee paying students are eligible to apply for a tuition fee loan to cover the full cost of tuition fees, provided you haven’t studied for an undergraduate degree at an equivalent or higher level before. You also have the option to pay all or part of your fees upfront, and can take out a loan for the rest. Tuition fees are set each year and may increase during your course.

There are some exceptions to the standard fee, including work placement years and study abroad. Details of these and the confirmed fee for your year of entry will be published on our website as soon as they are available. The fee for 2017 entry was £9250. www.sheffield.ac.uk/funding

Maintenance loansMaintenance loans are also available. To check your eligibility and to find out how much you could borrow see: www.gov.uk/student-finance

Depending on your household income you might be able to apply for a higher amount of maintenance loan. (Your household income is the income of the people you live with). The amounts available for 2018 entry are yet to be confirmed. The information below is for students who started their course in 2017 and should be used as a guide only.

Funding from the UK Government

£25,000 or less £7,097 £8,430

£35,000 £5,901 £7,220

£50,000 £4,107 £5,404

£62,187 or above £3,124 £3,928

No matter which university you choose, there is funding available for eligible UK and EU students to help with costs. Information on fees and funding on the following pages applies to UK and EU students only. If you expect to be an overseas fee payer, please see: www.sheffield.ac.uk/international

Applying to Student FinanceApplications open after the UCAS deadline and you’ll recieve an email through your UCAS track account when it’s time to apply. You apply for your tuition fee loan and maintenance loan at the same time – it’s all part of the same process. If you’re eligible, you can also apply for Disabled Students’ Allowances and additional grants for parents at this time.

In order for us to assess you for a University of Sheffield bursary and other awards, make sure you give consent to share your information with us when you apply to Student Finance.

Additional supportIf you have children, or have a disability or specific learning difficulty, you may also be eligible for additional grants or allowances that don’t need to be paid back. Check our website at: www.sheffield.ac.uk/funding

InterestInterest is applied from the moment you take out your loan, at the rate of inflation + 3%, up until the April after you leave the University

After that, if you are earning less than £25,000 a year interest is applied at the rate of inflation.

If you are earning between £25,000 and £45,000 a year interest is calculated and applied on a sliding scale between inflation and inflation +3%.

When you are earning over £45,000 a year interest is applied at inflation +3%.

2018 repayment details are yet to be confirmed by the UK government. The current proposal is for the repayment threshold to be raised to £25,000. The information below works on this assumption, but please be aware that this is for guidance only and information for 2018 entry will be available on our website once confirmed by the government.

Your gross salary is: You pay back 9% of: Net monthly salary (estimate):

Your monthly payment is:

£30,000 £5,000 £1,973 £37.50

£40,000 £15,000 £2,540 £112.50

£50,000 £25,000 £3,065 £187.50

Paying back your loansYou don’t pay anything back until the April after leaving the University and you are earning over £25,000 per year. Your loans are added together to make one monthly repayment and these are based on what you earn, not what you owe. The monthly repayments are 9% of whatever you earn above £25,000. When your wage changes, this is automatically reflected in your repayments. After 30 years, anything you haven’t paid back is written off. There’s no extra charge for paying all or part of your loan off early should you want to.

Example repayments:

This money is from the University and it doesn’t have to be paid back. It’s in addition to any government funding. You don’t need to apply for it; if you’re eligible you’ll receive an award for each year of your course, including a year spent studying abroad (should you choose to do this).

We use the details you submit to Student Finance and UCAS to assess your entitlement for the University of Sheffield Bursary Scheme. You’ll have a choice of taking your bursary as a direct payment or a fee waiver (reducing the amount of tuition fee loan required).

The University of Sheffield Bursary Scheme is split into 3 main areas and you may be eligible for more than one of these. Please note that if you are eligible, you cannot receive a combination of awards 2 and 3 together.

Further details and eligibilty criteria can be found on our website: www.sheffield.ac.uk/funding

Sheffield City Region

University of Sheffield Bursary Scheme

This year we supported many of our students through scholarships and bursaries. In 2016/17 we dedicated £8.8million to home students.

1. Some of the bursary is based on household income.

You’ll automatically receive this bursary if your household income is £40,000 or less.

Household income Bursary per year of study

£0–£25,000 £1,500

£25,001–£30,000 £1,000

£30,001–£40,000 £500

2. You can get an extra £500 based on where you live and household income.

If your household income is £25,000 a year or less and you live in one of the country’s most deprived areas (as defined by the government) you’ll get £500 a year on top of any other financial support you receive.

3. You can get £500 depending where you live and what grades you get.

If you live within the Sheffield City Region, in an area where it’s not common for people to go to university, and you achieve ABB (or higher) at A Level or equivalent, you’ll receive £500 a year on top of any other support you’re entitled to.

Cost of living

It’s important to understand the costs associated with studying at university and to plan your budgets accordingly. All students have different lifestyles and spend money in different ways, so it’s difficult to provide an accurate figure that applies to everyone.

On top of your rent, bills and landline/internet charges, there are your general day to day expenses to take into account. All students have varying costs and spend money in different ways due to lifestyle choices, but it would be wise to budget for any society or gym memberships you have, as well as setting some money aside for socialising. There’s also your mobile phone charges, TV licence, laundry costs, and any insurances and general study expenses (stationery, books etc.) to take into account.

Our Money Planner is an interactive tool that allows you to generate your own budget for the year. You can use this to budget for the coming year and identify any potential difficulties or shortfalls in advance of starting your course: www.sheffield.ac.uk/moneytools
