In preparation for building a new library in Saugus, the City surveyed residents online and at special visioning workshops.

Over 1,500 people provided their opinions about what isplanned to be a state-of-the-art multipurpose facility, with library and recreation spaces for the whole family. Here are some highlights from the responses:

*Populations: Resources for children, homeschoolers, special needs individuals, and teens were all seen as needed at the new library.

Seventy-seven percent of those polled say they would use the new center, and many suggestions were made for sites. No location has been selected yet. Stay tuned!

Librarian’s Corner by Karen CruzeCommunity Outreach CoordinatorCultural Landscape Programs Enrich our Library and Community Every year I look forward to July -- but not only because I’m excited about going to the beach or taking a long vacation. Rather it’s the month when the library learns about the level of funding we’ll recieve to carry out Santa Clarita’s Cultural Landscape Initative. If, over the past several years, you listened to Alepho Deng, author of They Rained Fire On Us From the Sky, tell about his harrowing journey as a young boy across the Sudan, or you heard noted Hispanic writer Gary Soto share the funny exploits of his characters, then you’ve reaped the benefits of the Initiative. Likewise if you enjoyed the offerings of our Chinese New Year celebration or attended Dia de los Ninos. The lion dancers, drummers, storyteller Barbara Wong, bilingual singer Nathalia Palis and Native American dancer Ben Hale, all came to you courtesy of this funding. Working with the City’s Community Services Division, myself and others look for program ideas fitting the Initiative’s mission: “To encourage, assist, and empower the community to eliminate all forms of discrimination, and to promote understanding and appreciation ofhuman differences.” We brainstorm with schools and local groups. Having community backing is one of the secrets of success. It is a pleasure to see overflowing rooms and venues. It is even more pleasurable to hear from our audience: “Amazing night!,”’More please!,” and “It is so great that you do this!” These are the kind of compliments that make my heart sing. I’m glad we get to offer these enriching programs; and now that it’s once again July, I’m looking forward to planning more!
