– There wasn’t any hospital.

– Nowadays, the health system is much better.

• The number of dead children is lower now.

• The life expectancy was more or less 65 years.

• The hygiene wasn’t very good. They seldom had a bath.

• They went to the washing place to wash their clothes.

RUBBISH

• They seldom produce rubbish like plastic, paper... The only rubbish was the organic one.

• These days, it is thrown to a dumpsite called Lapatx.

FOOD

–They ate specialy meat, fish(in the coast), vegetables and fruit. Sweets were like delicacy, they ate them in special occasions like weddings, someone’s birthday…

MEAT: Farm animals: pig, cow, sheep, rabit, chicken…

FISH: atuna, sardines, anchovies, squid…

VEGETABLES: beans, onions, tomato, potato, leeks, carrot, corn…

FRUITS: apple, nuts, hazelnuts, pear, cherries,

strawberries…

Health

In Azkoitia 100 years ago there were

only 4 doctors, no nurses, and several

healers who were rather popular, and one

chemist’s.

The situation nowadays is very different with

public and private healthcare centres and

clinics, dentists, nurses etc.

Hygiene Hygiene was not good.

They had only one toilet for all the apartments on

the same floor.

In farmhouses the stable or the fields around were

the toilet.

The shower did not exist and perhaps a bath might

be taken in a big washbowl in the kitchen once a

week the most often.

In summer they might make do with a splash in the

river.

Food Milk, maize, leeks, beens and potatoes were

the basic staple. White bread might still be a

luxury.

They starting eating very early and quite

often. The physical exercise let them burn

calories.

They drank water, (despite some occasional

danger), cider and wine (altough it was more

expensive).

Birth and death

Life spectancy was 65 years.

You might easily get tuberculosis or tifus.

Welfare

They threw away the garbage into a

dumpsite called the “txakur zulo”, i.e. “the

dog’s hole” and then they burnt the

rubbish.
