Carol works closely with Hotter’sdesign team to ensure they areinvolved with the model’s final look.“It’s important I understand theirvision of how the shoes will workwith an outfit,” added Carol, wholives in Stockport.

“We go through the catalogue pageby page discussing how each shotshould be styled. I’m careful toreflect the differences between theclassic and contemporary shoes ,switching from tailored styling forthe classics to softer lines forcontemporary. I’m always consciousthat the clothes are comfortable, easy to wear and are appealing toHotter customers.”

Armed with notes, and lots of ideas,Carol had to create 44 outfits andthe shopping began. But thatproved to be a new challenge asphotos for the Spring cataloguewere taken in December – soshorts and summer skirts werethin on the ground!

Carol took seven days tocomplete her shopping trip using the internet and high street stores.

Every outfit was agreed andphotographed in the studio before itwas packed for shipping.

With the guarantee of long days, bright light and good weather inDecember, the Spring 2012 shoottook place in Cape Town. Onarrival the team had a productionmeeting to determine whichphotos would be taken andwhen; at which point Carol’soutfit photos came in handy andshe had to unpack, steam andiron each one.

Versatile Carol was also incharge of hair and makeup forthe models – again carefullymatching the model’s look to theclassic or contemporary styling.“This added an extra half hour onthe start of my day,” said Carol, whowas up and ready each day for 6am.

With up to six shots taken per day,and having to keep a close eye onthe models to make sure they were looking fresh and crease freefor each shot, Carol was kept sobusy that it wasn’t until the finalnight when the team went out to celebrate that she had time to style herself!

Does shopping for a living soundlike a dream job …well stylist Carol McKitty does love her work, but there is a downside –steaming and ironing outfit, afteroutfit, after outfit!

In this edition of Comfort Club wegive you a peak behind the scenes

of the latest Hotter photo shoot, where Carol has worked herstyling magic on the models, their clothes and, of course,

their footwear.

“I love working with theHotter team, it’salways excitingto see the

latest coloursand styles and Ilook forward to the challenge ofmatching clothes and accessories tothe different footwear categories,”explained Carol who has styledHotter’s two seasonal shoots for thepast six years. “I love the pale aquaand light beige shades for Spring, they are so on trend. Hotter’s designers have madesure that there are lots of

With Spring just around the corner it’s a great time to try a new look, gethealthy or even test out a new hobby.

We combine all three here with tips on style andhealthy feet from two guest bloggers who might just inspire you to delve deeper into the web –following their latest news, or maybe even starting a blog yourself!

Of course we asked them to focus their advice around shoes and they’ve both come to the sameconclusion …read on and all will be revealed!

Vicki Day, has just been voted one ofthe top three UK bloggers in Vogue’sOnline Fashion 100 poll. Find her atmrsd-daily.blogspot.com

‘A shop girl atheart’ Vicki, wholives in SouthKensington, started as aweekend salesassistant atKendal Milne inManchester and

after college became a managementtrainee at Jaeger. Age 40 Vickireturned to university to studyjournalism, landing an internship atfashion industry bible Drapers.

Vicki’s motto is “there are no rules tofashion just great style”; we askedher how to wear shoes fashionably…

“The whole shoe process starts withthe face and then the feet: do theshoes put a smile on your face whichmake you want them to put them onyour feet … and do they fit? Thesecond part of the ’feet to face’ ratiois… are they not only fabulous butcomfortable, because nothing looksworse than a woman with her facescrewed up in pain from her shoes.

“Make a statement with your feet, soif you’re looking for full on glamourgo for those spindly stilettos, but ifyou’re thinking cute then buykitten heels - basically know whatlook you're going for, and go fullout. Let’s also remember nighttime is the right time for attention-getting shoes. If you till want towear a ‘drop dead’ look duringthe day, choose a closed-toe orpeep-toe shoe or sandal -Surabaya is perfect.

“Make sure your clothing is tailored oryou'll risk looking sloppy. A trouser legshould fall at or above the ankle, while skirts or dresses should endabove the knee - so Darcey is aperfect choice for trousers.

“And if you’re ever in doubt, alwaystake the line of comfort or a classicblack court shoe as this is always infashion and will always look fabulouson you.”

new Year,new You

Sue Ferguson is a podiatrist with aprivate practice in Tenterden, Kentand blogs as www.footstar.co.uk.

“What could bemore interestingthan feet?” saysSue. “I knew achiropodist whoused to say ‘howcan you bebeautiful if yourfeet hurt?’ and

he was right, if your feet arecomfortable you stand tall and youfeel confident – you project how youfeel. I use chiropody to take awaypain and recommend shoes andorthotics to help compensate formechanical foot problems. I say topatients; “you wear glasses so youcan see to read, they don’t fix youreyes, they just help you to function.Good shoes are the same, theydon’t fix your feet, but they supportthem and let them function without hurting.”

Heres are Sue’s tips...

“If you had back pain 50 years agochances are you would be told to lieon a board for a month and notmove. We now know you need tomove as soon as possible. To getwalking quickly you needcomfortable shoes; you don’t wantsore feet to add to your misery.Make sure you only wear shoes thatare supportive and comfortable.

“I deal with people who admit to methat their feet are not perfect. Sowhat should you do if you think youare in that category?

“First tip: wear shoes thataccommodate all your lumps andbumps. It sounds obvious but yourshoes should have room for all ofyour toes. So if you have hammertoes or toes that overlay each otherwear shoes that are deep andwide enough at the toe box end. Ifyou have bunions make sure yourshoes are wide enough across theforefoot. Don’t make bunions or

corns worse by wearing tight narrow shoes withpointed toes.

When in doubt think ‘comfort’ andyou won’t go wrong.

“Second tip: save your inappropriateglam shoes for party nights whenyou are not planning to walk far.

“Third tip: When you go out dogwalking don’t wear cheap rubberwellies … your feet will get cold andsore. Choose boots or shoes withGORE-TEX® technology to keep yourfeet dry, warm and comfortable. And don’t forget to slip in yourorthotics if you normally wear them.Walking for miles on uneven groundin unsuitable footwear like welliescan wreck your feet… and evencause back pain.”

“Nothing looks worse than awoman with her face screwed upin pain from her shoes. ” Mrs D

“I knew a chiropodistonce who used to say

‘how can you be beautifulif your feet hurt?’ he was

right, if your feet arecomfortable you stand tall

and you feel confident.”

In Britain our classic wines came, and still mainly do, from that greathome of wine - France. We’ve alsoenjoyed the classic fortified wines ofPortugal and Spain - port and sherry- which have alcohol added to keepthem drinkable long after the corkhas been pulled.

For French red wine Bordeaux is aclassic, with great ‘Château’ vintageyears dating back decades and evenlonger fetching many thousands ofpounds a bottle. Made to be ‘laid-down’ to mature, these wines oftencome in a claret shade which, forcenturies in Britain, became thename of this great wine.

Claret has to be a blend of two ormore grapes, of which CabernetSauvignon and Merlot must alwaysbe included. One to try is BordeauxRouge Patrice Calvet 2009 whichhas newly arrived at Majestic Winesat a modest £7.99 (buy two, £5.99). I found it immediately enjoyable, traditional but soft and fruity.

Today, wines come into the UK fromacross the world: Australia, NewZealand, South Africa, South

America, California. These ‘NewWorld’ wines can all be calledcontemporary, but are made to have wide appeal. They use classic European grapes, somewhich have been given new life after almost dying out.

Most of these contemporary tipplesare single grape, but we’rebeginning to see an increase in thenumber of blends, some followingthe Bordeaux tradition, such as WestAustralia’s Margaret River, VasseFelix Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot2009. West Australia is zoomingupwards for the quality of its wines, and this is reflected in its price(£12.49, £9.99 buy two). This winereally manages to get back to thetaste of France where the vinescame from, with a rich blackberrymix and dark plum. It also can keepfor a decade or so.

A note of caution readers and fellowdrinkers, New World wines are veryoften higher in alcohol by volumethan their classic Europeanancestors. This Aussie, for example,is 14.5% compared with Bordeauxwhich is usually 12.5%.

After that warning, let’s find adelicious white which iscomparatively low in alcohol, (12%).Made with the only other grapewhose wine is accepted as a worldclassic model - Riesling the greatwine of the Rhine. This German winewas almost unchallenged as thesupreme white but from the 1970smuch of the quality fell off (thoughnow improved). Better Rieslingcame from Alsace, Austria, and nowthe New World, especially Australiaand, for our bottle, New Zealand, from their leading wine region,Marlborough, made by FairleighEstate (£8.74, £6.99 buy two). Appleand a hint of lemon on the nose, when sipped, clean and fresh in themouth, with a great balance ofsweet and dry notes. Perfect as anaperitif or a light lunch of justvegetables or salmon.

It is five years now when I look backsorting through some photos, agreat thing to do on a drizzly day inDecember. I was going to Norwaywith some friends and neededsome walking boots and as apodiatrist you can imagine that I amvery particular about my footwear.

So when Mel from Hotter suggestedI try their GORE-TEX® walking bootsI was scornful, ‘surely not’ I thought,‘they are for casual wear and not upto the rigours of climbing and walking’.With the challenge from Hotter set, Idecided to push the boots to the

limit; climbing Preikestolen (Pulpitrock) near Stravanger, Norway. Iarrived after a four hour trek through some amazing terrainincluding bog, rocky crags andstreams to find my feet were warm, safe and amazingly without blisters.

You can see in the photo my Hotter boots standing proud at thesummit. I am the first to admit when I am wrong and in thinkingHotter boots were not up to the task,I was indeed wrong and I canthoroughly recommend them.

Health conscious Tracey wears apedometer every day; how many stepsdo you think she takes in her five dayHotter working week? The closestanswer to the total will win a £20 Hottervoucher. See back page for details.

Dear Comfort Club,I’ve always been fascinated with the culture and history ofChina and last October I was lucky enough to go there with mypartner Mark. We arrived at the Great Wall in 34C and sawseveral thousand people walking to the highest part, some ofthem in high heels! I decided to power walk the wall to seehow far I could get in two hours and the scenery was amazing. Our visit to the Chengdu panda sanctuary turned into amemorable all-day event. Tony the tiger, our travelling mascot,

proved to be a focal point of our travels and we were stoppedconstantly by people wanting their photo taken with him.China was everything I expected and more, the people were
