Scattered throughout Yokohama are monuments to numerous Japanese “firsts.” Here did Japanese witness for the first time railway transport, photography, gas lamps, beer, cocktails, ice cream, jazz, tennis, and countless other imports. That influx fostered an innovative atmosphere, and Yokohama has remained a leading center of technological and business progress to this day.
Spring cherry blossoms and summer fireworks displays over the harbor are hugely popular. Awaiting visitors at Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise are a walk-through aquarium, rides and other attractions. Yokohama’s professional baseball and soccer teams thrill sports fans.
Highlighting Yokohama’s rich cultural heritage is Sankeien, a sublime Japanese garden surrounded by temple buildings, tearooms and other architectural treasures from throughout Japan. Yokohama’s Noh Theater boasts Japan’s oldest noh stage still in regular service.
The city serves up superb dishes of any and all origins. That includes a full of complement of sushi and other Japanese delicacies. Skyscrapers near the convention center tempt shoppers with floor upon floor of stores and boutiques arrayed around spacious atria. The vast shopping arcade beneath Yokohama Station and neighborhood shopping streets are also well worth exploring.
