PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Term One has flown by, in a blink of an eye. There have been many highlights with student ac vi es and achievements: Clean 4 Shore, Zoo Snooze, Interna onal Women’s Day, Swimming Carnivals and VET work placements just to name a few. There have been many changes this term to improve learning outcomes for all students. Our COVID Intensive Learning Program is well underway to support students to catch‐up from missed learning in 2020. This will look different for students depending on their needs and abili es. Yondr Pouches have been in use for several weeks with a huge improvement in student engagement in class. On average each lesson has an extra 15 minutes of learning due to teacher me not being used on phone use issues. That is 1.25 hrs a day, 6.25 hours a week – amazing! Classroom disrup on has been greatly reduced. Students do not get into disagreements with staff over handing over their phone, they keep their phone on them and keep them safely in their pouch. We have new large outdoor chess and draughts available for student use, card games, games room and we are awai ng delivery of our outdoor table tennis tables. The playground has no ceably increased cha er and ac vity as students interact with each other. Most notably, we do not have social media posts and messages being sent to others that take students out of class and use many hours of staff me to sort through. Students have been very responsible with their pouch use. Students who forget their pouch borrow one from a Deputy for the day. If any parent needs to get an urgent message to their child, please call the office on 4329 3780 and they will call your child up to return your call.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Con nued. A huge thankyou to all students, staff and families for their support during our recent flooding. The smooth transi on to remote learning was fantas c. The school had all roads around flooded and access to the school was cut, requiring the school to become non‐opera onal for safety. The school had minimal rain damage with a few areas of small ingress of water, which is being repaired.

There will be an increased focus on school uniform. The main issues of incorrect uniform are jumpers: red for juniors and black for seniors , no grey. Track pants can be worn but must be plain black.

DP’s REPORT Years 7 and 11 Year 7 A big congratula ons to most of our Year 7 student who have se led in extremely well this term. Moving into Year 7 is a significant transi on point in the lives of all young people. The reports back from most teachers have been very posi ve and I have been impressed to see quality lessons taking place in our classrooms. I would also like to congratulate our Year 7 student engaged in our targeted programs. The musical, drama c and ar s c talent of students in CAPA has been well noted. Our TSP students have been ac vely comple ng fitness assessments and training and our high poten al students in STEP have been producing academic work of a very high standard. It has definitely been pleasing to observe most students reflec ng our core values of respect, responsibility and personal best. I encourage parents to contact the school and chat with your child’s core teacher, Year Advisor – Mr Koen or myself, par cularly if you have any concerns or if you would simply like an update on your child’s progress. Year 11 Many assessment tasks have begun! Most students have been fran cally preparing for examina ons or commencing research tasks that need to be submi ed. I have been pleased to see a lot of students studying in small groups in the library. Although many senior students were not happy with the introduc on of the Yondr pouches, I have definitely observed an increase in produc vity, applica on to schoolwork, study and revision during break mes or free periods. In the past I would see many senior students was ng their me k‐toking, snap cha ng or accessing other forms of social media. The improved applica on to schoolwork is refreshing and noted by all of the teachers I’ve spoken to over the past fortnight. As I have previously men oned, the beginning of Year 11 sets the founda on for the next 18 months. Should any parents require an update of their child’s progress then please feel free to contact Mr. Bush or myself so that we can keep you up‐to‐date. I encourage all students to develop and maintain posi ve habits that will hold them in good stead as they prepare for the HSC.

DP’s REPORT Years 8 and 10

It has been an interes ng approach to the end of Term One in 2021. I would like to thank the majority of Year 8 and 10 students who have been excep onal in transi oning to a phone free school with the use of the YONDR phone pouches. It has been fantas c to see students being more focused in classes and ac ve during break mes!

As we approach the end of the term some students in both Year 8 and 10 are beginning to realise the differences from last year and unfortunately some students are slipping back into bad habits. I would like to share this advice from MATRIX EDUCATION Online that outlines some of the common issues students in Year 8 and 10 can face:

Year 8

Year 8 has new challenges for students but is s ll part of Stage 4. Many parents are unsure of exactly what that means for their

child. I like to think that students in Year 7 are introduced to many new concepts and subjects and Year 8 is the year in which they

consolidate and master these concepts before advancing to Stage 5 of their educa on.

Bus Zone Reminder

We would like to remind our parents and carers that they are not to drop off students in the BUS ZONES during the specified me

periods. The drop off areas are in the KISS and RIDE zone or via the side access gate on Pandala Lane.

VAPES or E‐Cigare es

We have had a small number of students bring Vapes or e‐Cigare es to school. Consistent with DoE and school policy – vaping,

selling or being in the possession of e‐cigare es will result in disciplinary ac on that may lead to a student being suspended from

school.

Year 9

Our Year 9 students are currently finishing their Term 1 Assessment Tasks across all of their KLA’s. As a cohort they have had a

very se led start to the year and seem to be enjoying their elec ve subjects. Students are no longer allowed to change elec ve

classes as they need to complete the mandatory course hours.

INSTRUCTIONAL LEADER—LITERACY & NUMERACY UPDATE

From the outside teaching can look simple. Covid and the experience of learning from home in 2020 gave a bit more insight into some aspects and challenges of our profession. Teachers are very much like the metaphor of the duck on top of the water looking calm on the surface while paddling fran cally underneath; there is a lot of considera on that goes into making decisions for teaching and learning programming that is unseen. Teachers make informed judgements based on their knowledge of students and how they learn through formal and informal assessment and constantly adjust and pivot to cater for change and new informa on. The ‘Teaching and Learning Cycle’ seen here explains the teaching and learning process. Researched and developed by Helen Timperley, it is the model that is founda onal to much of the high impact professional learning design and approaches schools use to implement improvement. However, there is always an opportunity to grow and learn more. Keeping up to date with what works best research and ways to implement it has been an ongoing theme at Narara Valley High School. This includes using data to inform prac ce.

Data‐informed prac ce: Where are my students now? The Intensive Literacy and Numeracy team have been hard at work analysing and comparing student results to determine where our students are now. We have been looking at assessment data from external sources such as NAPLAN, Best Start Yr7, Yr9 Check‐in assessments, HSC and HSC Minimum Standard tests. We have then compared them with our school‐based understanding of student learning strengths and areas for further support gained from internal assessments, work samples, quizzes and teacher professional judgment. Through this close analysis process, we have been able to fine‐tune and specifically target what areas of literacy and numeracy support we are focusing on for individual students, for whole year groups and teachers. As you can see assessments provide valuable informa on to us. They are not merely assessment for assessment’s sake. We use assessment AS a learning tool, to plan FOR learning and then as evidence OF what has been learnt. They inform our planning and help us to determine support and growth for students and staff. Learning for the community: The Intensive Learning team have no ced the need for support with vocabulary. Students are finding it challenging to read and comprehend texts; including test papers and ques ons. At mes students are guessing answers because the words provided in mul ple‐choice answer op ons are unfamiliar. They are not able to share these due to hygiene. Check‐in assessment Yr8: These will be taking place 19th April to the 7th May‐ Term 2 and assess reading and numeracy progression. Interna onal Women’s Day

Happy Interna onal Women’s Day from NVHS.

On Monday 8th March we held our annual #IWD event. Female staff & students were part of an amazing event which helped deliver the message #choosetochallange. Thank you to our wonderful drama students, vocalists, Zumba instructor, all of the students who baked and helped to make the event possible. We'd like to acknowledge the staff on the IWD commi ee for the enormous effort they put into making this year’s IWD such an empowering event. PAWS – Posi ve Affirma on Well‐being Sessions

Our second PAWS session was last week. It is so fantas c to hear so many posi ve comments from both staff and students about

the program so far. Below is a blurb from one of our sessions. We will try and include a new session each month.

Dungeons and Dragons Session: Mr Maranik

As our intrepid par es con nue their adventure along the Swords Coast, we would

like to thank Good Games and Good Games Gosford for sponsoring our PAWs group.

They have generously provided us with an assortment of miniatures to help us see

the combats play out in front of us. Each player was able to pick a miniature to

represent them on dungeon map, making the whole experience more immersive.

Our “breakfast program” runs every Thursday morning 730‐8am. All

students are invited to access a free breakfast and socialise with their

peers and teachers before star ng their day. Please take the

Year 6‐7 Parent Informa on Evening

A fantas c a ernoon mee ng our 2022 Year 7 students and their families

on Tuesday 9th March. Our School Leaders were wonderful tour guides as

they walked groups around our facili es. Parents and future students had

the opportunity to tour the school, speaking to staff from all facul es,

experiencing some of the resources used in lessons and gaining

informa on about our specialist programs we have on offer.

NVHS Music Tour 2021

Elec ve Music students have been gearing up for another epic Primary School Tour for 2021! Each year, a group of elite musicians

are chosen to engage on a 3 day whirlwind tour to our feeder primary schools to deliver an earth shaking, toe tapping and thrill‐

seeking concert for all students to watch and enjoy, and, as always, have a sing and dance out their energy. This year’s tour took

us to Our Lady of the Rosary Wyoming, Gosford East, Niagara Park, Wyoming, Narara and Valley View Public Schools, and wowed

audiences with hits from Taylor Swi , Guns & Roses, Tones & I, The Jackson 5 and One Direc on. Huge congratula ons need to

go to Ella Powell, Savannah Duck, Connor Gyorffy, Daniela Vassalo, Cooper Newton, Jacob Syiemiong, Lavender Woodbridge,

Kristy Oliver, Joseph Alvaro, Xavier Cardozo, Ben Pugh, Lincoln Burkinshaw, Will Parkhouse and Dylan Grey for their incredible

efforts, as well as Ms Akhurst for her organisa on and coordina on, and of course Mr Ross and Mr Legg for their contribu ons to

NVHS Concert Band

The Narara Valley High School Concert Band are a fun‐loving group of musicians who rehearse weekly on a wide variety of concert

band music. We share a love of music and a desire to share this interest with our community by enriching the community culture

through performance.

The repertoire of the band includes a wide variety of musical genres that would appeal to any age group, from Classical to popular

tunes, including movie themes, jazz, big band, show music, military marches, as well as the composi ons of local composers.

The band's members span from years 7‐12, and we are always looking for new members to come and join us. The band meets

weekly on Monday a ernoon from 2:30pm to 4:30pm in the Performance Space. New members of all experience levels are

always welcome!

PDHPE REPORT

This is the second instalment of PE news and already the year is off to a flying start! With the swimming carnival been and gone as

well as all of the spor ng teams beginning their knockout compe ons it has been a very busy few weeks in the PDHPE

department!

Our classes have begun the year in a posi ve way and the majority of students are displaying the school’s core values of Respect,

Responsibility and Personal Best throughout both prac cal and theory lessons. Could I please remind all students and parents that

they must bring their PE uniform, otherwise there will be further consequences.

Currently our Junior students are working on the following in class:

Year 8 – Health is wealth (prac cal and theory)

Year 9 – What makes me (theory) & A show of force (prac cal)

Year 10 – Equal opportuni es to get involved (prac cal and theory)

Swimming Carnival

The school swimming carnival was held on Friday 19th February, Week 4 at Gosford Pool. The day was a humid 24 degrees, with

rain threatening, however water was sparkling with an cipa on as the 4 houses of Bannister, Gardner, Mackay and Saxby arrived

with enthusiasm at heart. The day began with our long‐distance races and we saw some outstanding performances from a range

of students. Once the shorter distances kicked off we saw a ba le take shape between Bannister and the dark‐horse, Saxby that

would go down to the wire. A special men on must go to our fantas c Year 12 students who a ended the carnival with bright

colours, enthusiasm and a sense of good fun that was reflected throughout everyone’s enjoyment across the day.

However, this enthusiasm and good will did not translate into a posi ve performance for the student body in the student vs staff

race. With the day winding down the crowd was swelling with an cipa on as the staff and senior students took their places on

the blocks. With a closely fought race it took a come from behind swim by the PDHPE staff team to ensure victory for the staff.

Overall the day was a roaring success and huge thank you must go to Mrs Ludlam and Mr Koen for organising the en re carnival.

To all staff and students I thank you all for your efforts and par cipa on over the day.

Zone swimming carnival was held on Thursday 4th March at Peninsula Leisure Centre. This was a fantas c day overall. NVHS took a

smaller team than usual, however what we lacked for in size we made up for in enthusiasm with two of students taking age

champion in their respec ve ages. Well oden to Megan Ca o (17+ girls) and Mia Akhurst (12 girls) for their outstanding efforts on

the day. We managed to finish 5th in the overall standings which was fantas c effort by our amazing students.

Sydney North swimming will be on Thursday 25th March at Sydney Olympic Park. More details to come.

Spor ng Teams

There are a variety of spor ng teams beginning their journey in 2021 over the coming weeks. These include the Girls and Boys

Cricket teams, Girls and Boys Basketball teams, Girls and Boys Volleyball teams, Under 15 girls Netball, Girls Touch Football and

Under 14’s Rugby League. We have already had some success in our Open Girls Basketball team winning and the Open Boys Touch

Football team succeeding in their opening games. Please ensure you are listening out for any spor ng team announcements at roll

call.

REPORT: Very impressive win to Narara Valley. The team has been dedicated to a ending training sessions and displayed

their true form by winning the second set 25 to 14.

The win was achieved through a solid team effort where all players at mes, provided crucial rally winning shots. Overall, the

most valuable players were Nathan Rodgers and Jheff Vergara.

EVENT: Sydney North Trials, Thornleigh [Thursday 4th February 2021]

STUDENTS ATTENDING: Nathan RODGERS and Jheff VERGARA

REPORT: There were approximately 70 students who a ended the trial. Both Nathan and Jheff made it through to the top

25. Unfortunately, they both missed selec on in the final squad.

This is the first me we have sent students to trial for Regional Volleyball. It was fantas c that they progressed so far during the

trial. Both boys will have a big impact in our school team.

Congratula ons on your perseverance and skill development in the game of volleyball.

EVENT: CHS Knockout [Round 2] versus Henry Kendall High School. [11.3.21]

RESULT: Henry Kendall 131 defeated Narara Valley 72

TEAM: Thomas Annesley, Liam Buckley, Jordan Collins, Peter Cur s, Jarrah Fender‐Walters, Jaden Jensen, Dylan Kesby, Jed

Leadbi er, Keegan Montgomery, Logan O’Brien, Riley Post, Riley Shearman and Jesse Walker.

REPORT: Despite the forecast of wet weather the game went ahead much to the delight of both teams. Narara bowled first.

Logan 1‐27, Liam 1‐7, Jesse 2‐51, Riley 1‐13, Peter 1‐7 and Jarrah 3‐1 dismissed Henry Kendall for 131. Some missed catches did

allow Henry Kendall to achieve a higher score. Riley Post led the team well and consequently got a solid response from the whole

team.

Henry Kendall had several strong bowlers and kept our response to 72. Best ba ers for Narara were Riley [30], Jarrah [15] and

Peter [10].

The student’s behaviour was excellent, and I look forward to a be er showing with this team in 2022. Thanks also to Jackson and

Harisyn for their support.

Students from the Support Unit have been doing an

AMAZING job washing cars to raise money for our local

Rural Fire Service (RFS). Over the last month they have

washed 14 cars, that’s $140 for the RFS! Thank you to all

As part of our Targeted Programs, our Job Ready group has been hard at work moving some large garden beds. The removal of

the garden beds are to make way for our new gym equipment coming soon. The boys did a fantas c job at reusing materials and

learning new skills such as reading levels, using string lines and digging post holes. Great effort boys!

TAS REPORT Our TAS students have been demonstra ng enthusiasm towards learning and developing new skills. We have been very impressed with the way students are willing to challenge themselves in trying new things. Our Year 7/8 students will be wrapping up their first area of TAS learning, ge ng ready to rotate onto something different next term.

Faculty invoices have now been sent home. Could we ask that you assist us by paying these as soon as you are able. Contact the front office or our Head Teacher Stuart Harvey if you have any ques ons regarding this.

Our new Year 11 VET students have completed their Work Readiness training in prepara on for their Work Placement commencing Term 2. When the me comes, we ask that all paperwork for Work Placement is completed efficiently and submi ed when required to avoid complica ons. We will be following up with any students who have not completed this training. We would like to congratulate our Year 11 VET students on their a en veness during the VET Induc on and the way they have been commi ng themselves to lessons and displaying excep onal work ethic thus far this term. Our Year 12 VET students are currently on Work Placement and employer comments have been posi ve thus far.

It was nice to see parents here for our EXPO for Year 6 students transi oning to NVHS in 2022. We love to show off the wonderful things we do here in TAS and the amazing facili es and learning opportuni es we are able to off here at NVHS in TAS.

We hope you all have a lovely Easter break and will see all our students re‐energised for a posi ve start to Term 2.
