Featured teacher Jacinta Pinkster is our Featured Teacher for November. Jacinta is the very creative teacher who works with

the Possums. She has the responsibility of helping to develop the school’s performing arts and sensory

awareness programs. “I joined the Peterborough family in 2015. I have enjoyed every minute of my time at

school and feel very lucky to work alongside such hard-working, dedicated and creative colleagues. Being

part of the students’ lives and watching them grow and learn is a very rewarding experience. Outside of

school, I teach dance lessons for people with a disability. I also enjoy spending time with my family, friends

and my puppy dog, Opie!”

Featured school program Morning circle At Peterborough each class participates in a morning circle or morning meeting. The morning circle is a

very important part of our day as it settles, informs and engages the students. Morning circle connects the

students to the teacher, to each other and to what is going to happen during the day. Morning circle also

engages students in many Key Learning Areas including English, Mathematics, Science and Personal

Development. During morning circle students use technology including interactive whiteboards, iPads,

switches and computers to assist with communication and engagement during the activities presented.

Primary ‘Discovery Space’ excursion On Monday November 12, our primary classes held the annual ‘Family Fun Day’ excursion to the

Discovery Space. It was wonderful to see students from across every primary class engaging with the

different learning spaces. Among the favourite stations were; the shop, Antarctic ship and train station. We

were extremely proud of the positive behaviours displayed by every student while representing our school

in the broader community. We are already looking forward to our next visit! - Jacinta Pinkster

Art Awards Three Peterborough students have recently been acknowledged for their creativity.

Brolga student Taj, received a highly commended award in the Schools Reconciliation Challenge 2018. Taj

has now won awards in this competition in consecutive years. Taj’s art work is titled “Gerringong Friends”.

It is about the place where Taj lives and his school friends. The art work is part of an exhibition currently

touring N.S.W. Taj graciously accepted his award in Sydney.

Two more Peterborough students have received praise for their art work, Samantha and Charlie entered

the Wollongong Council Christmas competition. As a result their drawings are now on display in Wollongong

Mall. Taj, Samantha and Charlie are part of Nancy’s creative arts club.

Library news Two very exciting things have been happening in the library this month.

Lego challenge Thank you must go to Kiama Toy World for donating prizes and sample bags for our LEGO Challenge. It

was a huge success. Thank you to Rose for assisting in the organisation of our challenge and to the staff

who were able to help during their lunch break. Students were very busy building boats, gardens,

skyscrapers, houses and interesting patterns. Everyone who participated received a prize. We have

decided to host another challenge next year and will continue to provide opportunities for students to

develop their LEGO building skills in a Wednesday club during lunch play.

Robotics We were very lucky to have a visit from Lauren Purcell a STEM instructional leader at Kiama Public School.

Lauren and her team showed our students how to code simple instructions for some really cool robots

called Mangobot and Dash.

There are even more exciting activities ahead in 2019.

Lauren will be coming on Tuesdays in term 1 to work with a High School and a Primary group of children

who have displayed real interest in the Robotics program. This has motivated us to join the Hour of Code -

a global movement involving 180 countries around the world. During this hour in week 8 HS5 will be

learning how to use Scratch Jr an iPad application that allows students to explore simple creative coding.

The Art Expo

The Art Expo and presenation is one of the major events on our school calendar. Mia and Deb organised

a fabulous display based on students’ individual and class art and craft work. Miss Corkery presented gold

banner awards to students who achieved gold level. Miss Corkery also presented certificates of

achievement to students in years 6,10,11 and 12.

Jumbo Flight Some very excited Peterborough students recently went for a mystery flight in a QANTAS jumbo jet. For most students it was their first ride in a plane. The Saturday adventure was a great day for the students who were even interviewed for the news. Thank you to Sue, Chrissie, Cassie, Blake, Senna and Nancy who accompanied the students for the ride.
