SLEEP HEALTH

What to do if you or a loved one is suffering from symptoms of a sleep disorder? What to do if you or a loved one is suffering from symptoms of a sleep disorder?Today, there is a very simple step you can take to help your care provider and you determine why you are having problems sleeping.

A sleep study does require a physician order. Once you talk with your provider and share your symptoms, he or she will perform a physical exam to rule out other factors. They may require you to undergo a series of tests such as a simple lab test to find out what’s going on within your body. They may also recommend you for a sleep study.

Sleep studies are performed overnight. The professional staff at Kirby Medical Center will walk you through how the program works and you can be assured that from the moment you arrive at the hospital for a sleep study, our goal is to make you feel as comfortable as possible.

If you or someone you love is suffering from a sleep disorder, you know how difficult it can be to function at your best and enjoy even the most routine daily activities. Did you also know that sleep disorders that are left untreated can lead to more serious health problems?Kirby Medical Center features two sleep suites designed and decorated for optimum patient comfort. Each suite has its own flat-panel television, queen-sized bed, and private bathroom. Our experienced technologists offer comprehensive testing for a full range of sleep disorders. Board-certified physicians from Carle Clinic, specialists in sleep medicine, evaluate the test results and prescribe an effective course of treatment so you can sleep, and feel, better.

If you’re ready to find a solution to your sleep problems, and want to do so closer to home, we’re ready to help you say “goodbye” to tired and “hello” to feeling rested and healthy.

To learn more about the program, contact the Kirby Sleep Center at (217) 762-1690 for more information.

BEST HEALTH

In March 2010, President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Two key elements of the Affordable Care Act require insurance companies to cover free preventive care and prevent insurance companies from dropping people when they get sick. Although there are unknowns regarding the upcoming healthcare changes, Kirby Medical Group is here to partner with you in your commitment to better health and wellness in 2014.

To get started, you should have an annual general wellness exam to check blood pressure, weight and height to calculate body mass index (BMI) and to review health risks. During your visit, your provider may recommend screening tests and im-munizations appropriate for your age. If you have chronic medical conditions, your provider may order tests to monitor the effectiveness of your medications. Together, you and your provider will develop a plan to work toward optimal health and wellness goals.

In addition to the general wellness exam, another important part of achieving your best health in 2014 is making a commitment to eating healthy and staying physically active. Making small changes to your eating habits can make a big difference for your long term health. Kirby Medical Center’s Fresh Start and Live Well Programs offer nutrition counseling along with exercise options based on your medical conditions, age, and gen-eral health. We also offer counseling services for those individuals who may have an eating disorder or emotional issues affecting their overall health. These services work in conjunction with each other to achieve optimal results for our patients. Remember, you are responsible for your own health and by partnering with your primary care provider, you can achieve better health and well-ness in 2014 and beyond.

NUTRITIONAL HEALTH

Ask your healthcare provider today!

Winterizing your DietThe cold weather can affect more than just your wardrobe and heating bill. It also causes your body to change energy levels, metabolism, and even food preferences.

Do you react to the bitter cold by splurging on a few calories to warm up or skip going to the gym to offset your discomfort? You are not alone. But the truth is that no weather warrants unhealthy eating habits. Just as you should not overdo ice cream during the summer, you should not live on hot cocoa and warm cookies during the winter.

Add these healthy foods to winterize your diet and stay healthy!

Add root vegetables such as carrots for a boost of beta-carotene, or boil turnips for vitamins C and A.

Oatmeal provides nutrients that are es-sential during winter. Oatmeal is high in zinc, which is important for proper immune function and has soluble fiber that improves heart health.

Soup made from broth is a perfect winter food. Pair your soup with a side of whole grain crackers for a dose of grains.

Broccoli and cauliflower help defend against winter sickness. Broccoli and cau-liflower are high in vitamin C, D, and other phytonutrients that are associated with enhanced immune function.

The Sky is the limit when you take care of your heart.

We all know giving helps others, whether we volunteer for organizations, offer emotional support to those around us or donate to charities. But studies show that giving is also good for the giver – boosting physical and mental health. Studies find these health benefits associated with giving: •Lower blood pressure •Increased self-esteem •Less depression •Lower stress levels •Longer life •Greater happiness

An International Journal of Psychophysiology study showed that people who gave social support to others had lower blood pressure than people who didn’t. Supportive interaction with others also helped people recover from coronary-related events. The same study also found that people who gave their time to help others through community and organizational involvement had greater self-esteem, less depression and lower stress levels than those who didn’t.

Living longerAccording to a 1999 University of California, Berkeley, study, people who were 55 and older who volunteered for two or more organiza-tions were 44 percent less likely to die over a five-year period than those who didn’t volunteer — even accounting for many other factors including age, exercise, general health and negative habits like smoking.

Feeling happierGiving can create a “warm glow,” activating regions in the brain associated with pleasure, connection with other people and trust. In a 2006 study, researchers from the National Institutes of Health studied the functional MRIs of subjects who gave to various charities. They found that giving stimulates the reward center in the brain, releasing endorphins and creating what is known as the “helper’s high.” And just like other highs, this one is addictive, too.
