LAVFW & MOCA President Carol Meadows

Here it is the end of a cold cold January but spring is just around the corner so our Red Bud tree tells us since it has blooms already! Thank goodness we live in the south & not in the snowy cold miserable north.

We have been busy with four dinners a month trying to build our funds for our programs. January 18th had two activities going at the same time. A “Celebration of Life for Sid Newberg” was held at the Post. The VFW Department of Florida District Six & Ladies Auxiliary had the “Youth & Teachers Award Banquet” that was wonderful to attend. Post 8255 & LAVFW had “2nd Place” winner Austin Selfridge & “4th Place” winner Ty Corfield for “Voice of Democracy”, “1st Place” winner Hanna Terhaar for “Patriots Pen” & two “Teachers of the Year” winners Calvin Malone Grades 9-12 Fleming Island High School & Erica Vanderventer Grades 6-8 Green Cove Springs Jr. High School. Way to go 8255!

The new Auxiliary room storage/pantry has been started & close to completion for use so painting is next. A lot of clean up & rearranging is also in the process. The MOC/MOCA Mid-Year Conference from January 24-25th was informative. The VFW, LAVFW & MAUX Mid-Winter Conference January 30th-February 2nd will have a lot of good information to be passed on after this weekend also. LAVFW member Fran Watson created a beautiful “Buddy Poppy” display that will be entered into the contest. February 14th will be the “Sweetheart’s Dinner” for Valentine’s Day. February 23rd is the “Patriot’s Pen” bowling at the Cassette bowling alley. Come support the teams! March 15th is the “Rock-A-Thon” so please help sponsor the rockers & all the other fun stuff we do for cancer. March 22nd is the “VFW Veteran’s Village” (Ft. McCoy) Picnic.

So as you can see we have a lot going on! Help is always appreciated for the dinners & any functions plus any new ideas are needed to help us with functions. Keep an eye on the Post web page at http://myvfw.org/fl/post8255/ updated by Tom Rentz & in the Canteen updated by Canteen Manager Kevin Eck.
