Welcome to the New Year!

Community Education wishes you interesting and active learning experiences this year, and we have some great choices to offer! When you take a Community Education class or travel the region with EDventures, our instructors and guides provide informative, life changing and fun learning experiences in a relaxed setting that is convenient for busy people like you!

We have lots of new classes this spring, so please take a few minutes to browse through the schedule. The computer fundamentals classes have expanded, and there are many more language classes than ever before. If you have a pet, there are classes to teach you about holistic care for them. Crafts, gardening, bird-ing, geology and Saturday afternoons Just for Kids are some of our most popular courses to round out your spring.

College for Kids – Summer 2013Mark your calendar: the summer College for Kids will be available for online and telephone registration in mid-March. We have additional scholarship funds this year from the Yavapai County Community Foundation, so watch for information.

EDventuresOur EDventures trip to Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands was the trip of a lifetime for the travelers aboard Aranui 3. The group came back relaxed and rejuvenated and will appreciate the ocean colors and warmth of the people through the winter months.

Bring your heart to Kenya!EDventures international trips make wonderful memories with our travels to locations off the beaten path, and they provide opportunities to connect with the people who live in these locations. We hope you will join us as we travel to Kenya, Africa in August 2013. Travelers will view big game in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, visit an elephant orphanage and complete a service project designed to help children have access to better educational opportuni-ties. The itinerary is packed! Call us at 717-7755 for more information.

Take a few minutes to look at the local EDventures trips this season. In early February we will spend 4 days in Southern Arizona for the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show. If you have never been, you will be amazed at the variety and quality of the gems and minerals. We will also visit the Pima Air and Space Museum and the Desert Sonoran Museum along with other “surprises” to be found in the Tucson area.

We are surrounded by beautiful landscapes in the southwest, and if you have ever been curious about these for-mations, join geologists Terry Steinborn and Harry Allen on a 5-day trip focused on the geology of the Colorado Plateau. You will learn so much while you travel through the beautiful sites of Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyon-lands and Monument Valley.

The Grand Canyon always tops our travel list. Travel with EDventures to hike it, raft it, soak in it, drive to it, and take in the breathtaking views. Overnight at Canyon de Chelly or spend the day at the Rock Art Ranch, steam boat on Canyon Lake or photograph ancient ruins and spectacular landscapes. The popular trips fill quickly, so make your reservation early.

We look forward to seeing you in a Community Education classroom or traveling with EDventures in spring 2013!

We will discuss the geology encountered along the way – starting in the Basin and Range country of southern Arizona, moving across the Colorado Plateau through Utah, then heading for the Rockies in Wyoming and Montana. The road crosses Yellowstone and Grand Tetons and ends at Glacier. The scenery and geology are spectacular – from the ancient rocks of the Grand Canyon to the very young volcanic activity at Yellowstone. Geology of the Pacific Northwest WS13-215 • Thur, 3/21 to 4/25 • 9 - 11 amPrescott • Bldg 4, Room 123From the beaches of the Pacific Ocean to the mountains and plains of Idaho, this course will explore the extreme contrasts of the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington and Idaho), relating the striking landscape to the underlying geology. The Cascade Range of very young volcanoes dominates the landscape. The high lava plains east of the Cascades look similar to northern Arizona. This continental margin region shows how plate tectonics shaped the region and continues to do so today. The Ice Ages, glaciers and related events have contributed also. Geologic features have influenced the way people have lived in the area for thousands of years, and we will discuss what geology may bring to the region in the future. No special geologic background or education is necessary.Steinborn, Terry & Allen, Harry • $85
