Day 1 – Sunday 22 Oct 2017Arrive at Ben Gurion Airport at 7.40am from Hong Kong if you are travelling on Cathay Pacific. You will be met and assisted by a representative of our local Office and transferred to your hotel. Check-in time is at 10.00am. The remainder of the morning is at leisure.Optional walking tour in the afternoon:Guest Guide: Meet Ilan Schori, expert guide and Tel Aviv historian. Ilan will take us on a relaxed walking tour telling stories of the ANZACs and the three battles that took place in and around Tel Aviv / Jaffa where the Yarkon River meets the Mediterranean Sea (TBC).Overnight: Tel Aviv – check in at 10am (B)

Day 2 – Monday 23 OctMeet your guide in the lobby of the hotel to start your tour. This morning we will travel northwards along the shimmering Mediterranean Coast. Stop to explore the ancient port city of Caesarea built by Herod the Great. See the aqueducts and the restored amphitheatre now used as a concert venue. Explore the Crusader Fortress with its unique dry moat. Enjoy a coffee break at Jaser Al Zarka – The Blue Bridge built over the Crocodile River by the Germans and Turks in honour of Kaiser Wilhelm’s visit to the Holy Land. Onto Meggido to explore the ancient mount and waterduct and see where the battle of Armageddon is prophesied to take place.Overnight: Haifa (B, D)

Day 3 – Tuesday 24 OctTravel north to Akko (Acre) to explore the Knights’ Halls and the secret escape tunnel dug by the Crusaders. Will walk through at the old port and will continue to the colourful bazaar. Continue to Nazareth for a visit to the magnificent Basilica of the Annunciation. Stop by the German WWI Military Cemetery with wooden crosses made from the propellers of crashed airplanes. Onto the Galilee for check-in to a unique kibbutz hotel for country style hospitality.Overnight Galilee Kibbutz (B, D)

Day 4 – Wednesday 25 OctGolan Heights off road and brewery visitStop at The Bnot Yaakov Bridge - a landmark site where ANZACs fought a historic battle in 1918. The bridge is of strategic importance as it is one of the few fixed crossing points for the Jordan River enabling access from the Golan to the Galilee. Experience a jeep tour of the Golan Heights with a view of the Syrian Israeli border and an explanation of the Sykes Picot agreement that still holds in the area today! Finish the day with a visit to the ‘Golan Magic’ audio visual experience and a tour of the

brewery making beer from the fresh waters at the source of the Jordan River.Overnight Galilee Kibbutz (B, D)

Day 5 – Thursday 26 OctFrom Nazareth to the Jordan ValleyStart the day with a tour of Kibbutz Degania – the world’s first Kibbutz. Visit the historic site of Degania, preserved and authentic since its inception and hear the story of the Pioneers who came in 1910 and decided to build something different - the Kibbutz. Walk around Degania and you will encounter ‘Kibbutznikim’ who love living the collective/communal life and will visit the pre-school - ‘kinder-gardens’, the dining-room and the museum. On for a visit to the relatively unknown Turkish Pilots Memorial in the fields of Kibbutz Haon. Visit the Railway Station at Semakh and the Light Horse Memorial on the Sea of Galilee waterfront and hear the story of the Battle of Semakh. Explore the Crusader Castle of Belvoir. Enjoy the spectacular view and hear the stories of the Crusaders and Saladin’s inability to take the Castle by force. Travel along the fertile Jordan Valley stopping by the Bridge built by General Allenby. Visit the site of the original Baptism on the Jordan River at Qaser El Yehud.Overnight: Jerusalem (B)

Day 6 – Friday 27 OctJerusalem New CityEnjoy a taste of the New City of Jerusalem today. Drive by the Knesset, Israel’s parliament and see the famous Menorah with biblical emblems. Visit the Shrine of the Book to see the original Dead Sea Scrolls. See the model of Jerusalem as it was during the time of King Herod. Experience a moving visit to Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial. In the afternoon tour the Latrun Tank Museum, the biggest of its kind in the world.Overnight: Jerusalem (B)

Day 7 – Saturday 28 OctAncient JerusalemVisit the Jerusalem Commonwealth Cemetery built on a site today known as French Hill. On for a rooftops tour of the Old City. Walk the Via Delarosa and stop at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Place a note at the Western Wall and visit the Jewish Quarter. Stroll the oriental markets of the Arab Quarter. Walk along the walls from Jaffa Gate to Mt. Zion. Visit the Dormition Abbey and the Room of the Last Supper. Drive to the city of Bethlehem. Walk through the Manger's Square to visit the Church of Nativity. Continue on for a visit to the Shepherds' Field. Stop at a local souvenir store for genuine olive wood products. Day 8 – Sunday 29 OctFloating the Dead SeaDepart Jerusalem and drive to the Dead Sea region, 400 metres below sea level and the lowest place on earth. Enjoy a nature walk at the desert oasis of Ein Gedi where we see wild animals roaming freely in the desert. Hike to the waterfalls and dip your feet in the cold clear water. Visit the mountain fortress of Masada, once a luxurious palace built by Herod the Great and later the last stronghold of the Jewish rebellion against the Romans. Explore the unique remains including the bathhouse, water cisterns, storerooms, hanging palaces and the Synagogue. Continue to your hotel on the shores of the Dead Sea for an afternoon of rest and relaxation. Enjoy a float on the salty waters of the Dead Sea. Day 9 – Monday 30 OctFollowing the path of the ANZACSGuest Guide: Meet Avi Navon, former chairman of the WWI Historical Society and expert on the history of ANZACs in the Holy Land. Avi will host us over the next two important days focusing on the events surrounding the Charge of the Light Horse at Beersheba. ** Today we closely follow the path of the ANZAC’s leading up to the attack on Beersheba. Visit the ANZAC Memorial at Kibbutz Be’eri and look over the border towards Gaza. Travel along the Besor River. Cross the Hanging Bridge to the Besor Dam built by the ANZACS. Stop by the restored Turkish “Patish” Ruins and hear the story of Colonel Richard Meinertzhagen’s “Haversack Ruse”, where he deliberately left false clues of a major attack coming from Gaza instead of Beersheba. Finish the day at Abraham's Well and Visitors' Center - situated on the banks of the biblical Beer-Sheva River, at the gates of the Old City. Day 10 – Tuesday 31 OctBeersheba DayEnjoy a special day in Beersheba commemorating the centenary of the achievements of the Australian soldiers in

World War I. Start the day with a moving service hosted by the Australian Ambassador and various dignitaries at the Beersheba Commonwealth Cemetery. The cemetery contains 1,241 Commonwealth burials of the Great War, 67 of them unidentified. There are rows upon rows of graves, meticulously maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Many of the graves are dated 6 November 1917, the date of the battle of Tel-El Khuwelfeh, an intense two day engagement, six days after the Battle of Beersheba. Join in the opening ceremony of the new ANZAC Museum in Beersheba. The new museum will be dedicated to the history of the Battle of Beersheba and will be built by the Beersheba Municipality in cooperation with the Australian Government, the Australian Embassy in Israel and the Pratt Foundation. The museum will be completed and officially inaugurated on 31 October 2017 (TBC). Visit Tel Sheva for an overview of the main battlefield sites in the area and a special ceremony hosted by the New Zealand Embassy. Experience a re-enactment of the Charge by the Australian Light Horse Association and the WWI Heritage Society. A large contingent (in full World War One battle attire) plan to re-enact the ride in 2017, the 100th Anniversary of the great charge. Continue on for the Australian event at the magnificent Park of the Australian Soldier established by the Pratt Foundation in 2008. The Park includes special facilities for children with physical and/or mental disabilities, including a maze for blind children with signs in Braille. ** Onto Jaffa or Abu Gosh for a festive farewell dinner at an authentic Middle Eastern Restaurant.Overnight: Tel Aviv (B, D)

Day 11 – Wednesday 1 NovDepart Tel Aviv and drive to Sheik Hussein Bridge for border crossing procedures to enter Jordan. Our first stop is Jerash, the ancient Roman city of the Decapolis. The city is one of the best examples of the grand, formal provincial Roman urbanism found throughout the Middle East. It contains paved and colonnaded streets, soaring hilltop temples, a handsome theatre, spacious public squares and plazas, baths, fountains and city walls pierced by towers and gates. Onto Al Salt, an ancient agricultural town and administrative centre. The architecture of this period is the highlight, houses with long-arched windows in picturesque narrow streets. This town was the site of a dramatic battle in 1917. Drive to Amman. Visit Amman Citadel and

Amphitheater. The Citadel is considered an important site because it has had a long history of occupation by many great civilizations. Overnight: Amman (B, D)

Day 12 – Thursday 2 NovKings WayStop at Zizia Railway Station on the Hajeez Railway Line which ANZAC Light Horse captured at the closing point of the war. This was in important strategic achievement in cutting off the Hejaz railway link to the Ottoman garrisons in Arabia. Depart Amman for Madaba. Best known for its spectacular Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics, Madaba is home to the famous 6th century Mosaic Map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Visit Mt. Nebo where Moses viewed the Promised Land before his passing. Explore the remains of the Byzantine Church with a mosaic floor, and from a platform in front of the church enjoy a breathtaking view across the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. Visit the magnificent ruins of the crusader castle at Shobak. The castle is perched in a wild, remote landscape in southern Jordan. Built in 1115 by Baldwin I. of Jerusalem it was strategically located on a hill on the plain of Edom, along the pilgrimage and caravan routes from Syria to Arabia.Overnight: Petra (B, D)

Day 13 – Friday 3 NovPetraEnjoy a spectacular full day tour exploring the rose-red city of Petra. Travel by foot through the awesome ‘SIQ’ valley. Visit the Treasury, and explore hundreds of buildings, tombs, temples, and a 3,000-seat theater from the first-century AD. Overnight: Petra (B, D)

Day 14 – Saturday 4 NovOnto Aqaba for a tour of the city and see the biggest flag in the world. See the Mamluk Castle where a great Arab victory took place in 1916 when this heavily defended Turkish stronghold fell to a daring Arab camel charge. Transfer to Eilat for your domestic flight to Tel Aviv International Airport and onto your Tel Aviv hotel.Overnight: Tel Aviv (B)

Colonel Robert Likeman CSM is a former Director of Health of the Australian Army. Born in England, he studied Arabic and Hebrew at Oxford University before taking up medicine. He emigrated to Australia in 1972.

In addition to his medical and military careers, Dr Likeman is also an established military historian, and has published seven books of Australian military history. Of particular interest for this tour is From Law to War, the biography of Brigadier General Lachlan Wilson, Commanding Officer of the 5th Light Horse Regiment in the Sinai Desert and afterwards of 3rd Light Horse Brigade in which was first into Damascus. Also of interest is From the Tropics to the Desert, which includes an account of the Desert War in Egypt and Palestine 1916 - 1918. Colonel Likeman has travelled widely in the Middle East, and in 2011 represented Australia at the 5th International Medical Conference sponsored by the Israel Defence Force in Tel Aviv. He also led our successful tour to Gallipoli for theCentenary in 2015.
