The 32nd UFCD Commencement Ceremony was held at the Curtis M. Philips Center for Performing Arts on May 18. There were 79 dental students who graduated with their D.M.D degrees, and 12 internationally educated dentists received cer-tificates. Also, 46 dental students received advanced certificates and graduate education program degrees.

Class president of four years, Joseph P. Richardson, D.M.D., gave a speech about the four years the students spent together, summarizing it as “we’ve studied, achieved and partied together.”

Richardson asked his classmates to think like bumblebees. With chunky bodies and stubby little

wings, bumblebees don’t appear to be aerodynami-cally designed for efficient flight, but they never doubt they can fly and buzz from flower to flower. He concluded his speech with a message to his col-leagues, “be a bumblebee and soar to the heavens. You can do it.”

A reception was held following the ceremony at the UF Hilton Conference Center. Photos of the commencement ceremony can be viewed at: http://dental.ufl.edu/offices/news/UFCD_commencement_07/index.htm.

High Honors magna cum laude were bestowed on Andrew Deitrich, Manav Malik, Angela Matrisciano and Maggie Novy.

The winners of this year’s show were Erin Smith and her Freshmen Rappers, with their urban poetry show, “Floss it right, floss it right, floss it tight!” Second runner-up was David Yates for his Victor Borge-like piano/comedy routine, and third runner-up was Jamie Amir with his beautiful Spanish Guitar medley performance. Harriet had excellent ideas for the staff retreat. She was a great leader. She always tried to focus on something that would be beneficial to all of us. She will be greatly missed here. Her grandchildren will be happy to have her with them. Kathy Cannon

Harriet has stopped in on several occasions and reports that her grandchildren-sitting activities are time consum-ing but very enjoyable. While she misses all the people and sends her best regards, she is glad she is not working for that slavemaster Dr. Clark anymore. Dr. Buddy Clark

When I first met Harriet, I wanted to be just like her. She became my mentor for many reasons but primarily because she made work fun but knew when to be serious and strict and when it was OK to play. Her devotion to the Special Events Committee was phe-nomenal and made Dentistry “THE” College to be a part of. My fondest story about her is that after I dressed like a duck for Halloween, she secretly left small little decorative holiday ducks in my office each and every holiday just to make me smile. She also gave me the nickname “Ducky.” Shee-mailed out a daily “thought for the day” which made you stop and think what is impor-tant in life, and because of all of these things she is greatly missed. he department of pediatric dentistry, headed by Dr. Marcio Guelmann, chair, focuses on teaching and community service.

The department provides a two-year pre-doctoral training program which helps students to develop skills necessary to comprehensively care for the dental needs of the healthy child and the child with special health care needs. The department also has 10 residents in the post-doctoral training program. Both pre-doctoral students and residents gain experi-ence in comprehensive preventive and restorative care, hospital-based dental care in an operating room setting, sedation and monitoring in the dental office setting, treatment of patients with oral facial anomalies, diagnosis and treatment of developing malocclusions, and emer-gency dental care. In addition, residents participate in a four-week rotation in anesthesiology at Shands Hospital and a two-week rota-tion in pediatric medicine at the Eastside Community Health Center.

Consultation and dental care are provided to patients referred from pediatric cardiology hematology/oncology, nephrology and neurology clinics and from the Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit. The department also works together with the Craniofacial Center as part of the center’s multidisciplinary craniofacial team. In collaboration with the department of orthodontics and oral maxillofacial surgery, the pediatric department con-tributes by providing oral health education, counseling and restorative treatment for patients with craniofacial anomalies. The pediatric department is dedicated to service in the community. “The department’s service mission to the community is accomplished by providing care to the undeserved population,” said Dr. Guelmann, “and, in

this way improving access to care and the oral health of children.” The department participates in the Head Start program, which is a pre-kindergarten educational experi-ence for low-income children. The department also treats patients at the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind in St. Augustine eight times each year. In addition, the department provides services through Shands Eastside Community Practice, whose dental clin-ic provides oral health services for low-income families. Several of the department’s faculty and staff members work at the clinic. The Tacachale Dental Clinic also falls under the department’s wing. This clinic enables the department to provide care to Tacachale residents, most of whom have severe and profound disabilities; it also allows their pre-doctoral students and residents to have valuable clinical educational experience with patients who have disabilities.
