Dear Graduating Students:

On behalf of the Touro University Worldwide Faculty, Staff and Administration, I want to extend my

congratulations to you upon the achievement of your degree. The Seventh Annual Touro University

Worldwide Commencement Ceremony will be held on Sunday, July 12th at 2:00 P.M. PST in the

Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall of the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, CA.

Students earning a degree by Summer II 2019 thru Summer I 2020 are eligible to participate in this

year’s Commencement.

The Commencement Handbook will provide you and your guests with all the necessary information

required to plan for this auspicious occasion. Directions to the ceremony are provided on page 12.

We sincerely thank you for attending Touro University Worldwide and celebrate your

General Information

TUW is monitoring the recent outbreak of COVID-19. The wellbeing of our students, their families, and

TUW staff are a top priority. At this time, our commencement ceremony is still scheduled for July 12,

2020 but due to COVID-19 we will inform you if the dates change. We will continue to monitor Federal,

State and Local Health agencies guidelines. Therefore, if you are planning to attend the 2020 TUW

commencement, it is a good idea to purchase travel insurance.

The Academic Dress

History

The origins of academic dress date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, when universities were taking

form. The ordinary dress of the scholar whether student or teacher, was the dress of a cleric. With few

exceptions, the medieval scholar had taken at least minor orders, made certain vows, and perhaps been

tonsured. Long gowns were worn and may have been necessary for warmth in unheated buildings.

Hoods seem to have served to cover the tonsured head until superseded for that purpose by the skull

cap.

A statute of the University of Coimbra in 1321 required that all "Doctors, Licentiates, and Bachelors"

wear gowns. In England, in the second half of the 14th century, the statutes of certain colleges forbade

"excess in apparel" and prescribed the wearing of a long gown. In the days of Henry VIII of England,

Oxford and Cambridge first began prescribing a definite academic dress and made it a matter of

university control even to the extent of its minor details.

The assignment of colors to signify certain faculties was to be a much later development, and one which

was to be standardized only in the United States in the late 19th century. White taken from the white

fur trimming of the Oxford and Cambridge Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) hoods was assigned to arts and letters.

Red, one of the traditional colors of the church, went to theology. Green, the color of medieval herbs,

was adopted for medicine, and olive, because it was so close to green, was given to pharmacy. Golden

yellow, standing for the wealth which scientific research has produced, was assigned to the sciences.

European institutions have always had great diversity in their specifications of academic dress and this

has been a source of confusion. In contrast, American colleges and universities opted for a definite

system that all might follow. A significant contribution to the development of this system was made by

Gardner Cotrell Leonard of Albany, New York. Mr. Leonard designed gowns for his class at Williams

College in 1887 and had them made by Cotrell and Leonard, a firm established by his family in Albany,

New York. He was greatly interested in the subject and following the publication of an article by him on

academic dress in 1893, he was invited to work with an Intercollegiate Commission made up of

representatives of leading institutions to establish a suitable system of academic apparel.

Gowns Touro University Worldwide gowns are black. The gown for associate and bachelor degrees have

pointed sleeves and are designed to be worn closed. The gown for master degrees have oblong sleeves,

opens at the wrist. The sleeve base hangs down in the traditional manner. The rear part of its oblong

shape is square cut, and the front part has an arc cut away. The gown is so designed and supplied with

fasteners that it may be worn open or closed. The gown for the doctoral degree has bell-shaped sleeves.

Gowns for the associate, bachelor and master degrees are untrimmed. For the doctoral degrees, the

gown is faced down the front with black velvet; three bars of velvet are used across the sleeves. These

facings and crossbars may be of velvet of the color distinctive of the disciplines to which the degree

pertains, thus agreeing in color with the binding or edging of the hood appropriate to the particular

doctoral degree in every instance.

For all academic purposes, including trimmings of doctoral gowns and edging of hoods, the colors

associated with the different disciplines are as follows:

Hoods

Touro University Worldwide hoods are black. Hoods are worn for master and doctoral degrees. Only

hoods worn for the doctoral degree have panels at the sides.

Hoods are lined with navy blue and a light blue chevron and gold accent. The binding or edging of the

hood is to be velvet or velveteen. Width of binding or edging is based on degree and the color should be

indicative of the subject to which the degree pertains (see above).

Caps

Touro University Worldwide caps are black. Caps for associate, bachelor and master degrees are

mortarboards. Only doctoral degree caps are velvet. A long tassel is to be fastened to the middle point

of the top of the cap only. The tassel should be black for associate, bachelor and master degree. A tassel

of gold should be used for the doctoral cap.

3. A pop-up box will appear asking you to Select Your Collection between Faculty

Rental, Student 2019 or Student 2020. Please choose ‘Student 2019’ or ‘Student

2020’ based on the year you completed your program.

4. Please select from the options available – Associate, Bachelor, Masters or

Doctorate. Each unit includes a cap, gown and tassel. Additional tassels, honor cords

and stoles are also available for purchase. Stoles and Honor Cords are optional.

5. Masters Degree students will need to choose their major/curriculum field of study

for the band color for your hood.

6. On the cart page, please take a moment to review your selection. When ready,

please click on the checkout button and complete the checkout process.

7. Orders will be shipped via UPS to the address you provide. UPS does not deliver to

PO Boxes.

Honors

Graduation Honors Recognition

Exceptional scholarship is recognized upon graduation for students based on the following scale:

Summa Cum Laude: 3.90 to 4.0

Magna Cum Laude: 3.75 to 3.89

Cum Laude: 3.60 to 3.74

Graduates who fall into the above categories may purchase honor cords (see page 4) at the time of their

regalia to wear during the commencement.

Valedictorian

Eligibility

Only graduates who RSVP to the Commencement Ceremony and meet their program requirements by Sunday, April 19, 2020 are in the running for Class Valedictorian.

Process

Graduates who meet Eligibility for Class Valedictorian will be contacted directly by the Commencement Committee with instructions regarding the process of selection on Monday, May 4, 2020. All items requested by the Commencement Committee are due to graduate@tuw.edu no later than 6:00 P.M. PST Monday, May 11, 2020.

Criteria

1. Overall GPA of 4.0

2. No more than 1 LOA per year throughout the entire length of their program

3. A vote by school administrators

4. Level of participation in Community Service (Local, State, National, and/or International)

5. Dedication to TUW community

The selected Class Valedictorian and runner-up will be notified by the Commencement Committee on Friday, May 22, 2020 via email.

Information for Graduates

Participation in the Ceremony

In order to participate in Commencement as a graduating student, you will need to apply for graduation

by completing a TUW Application for Graduation and submitting it to the Office of the Registrar when

you are enrolled in your last course of the program. You are also required to RSVP for commencement

by responding to the official invite sent to all eligible commencement candidates via email or by

emailing your full name and number of guests to graduation@tuw.edu

Final RSVP for Commencement is Friday, May 29, 2020.

*Both an application for graduation and RSVP for the commencement ceremony must be received in order for you

to participate in Commencement activities.

**Submission of an application for graduation is not a substitution for RSVP of attendance of or participation in the

Commencement activities.

****Please Note: Doctoral Students

Only students who have successfully defended their completed dissertation and have been approved by the Provost

may be considered for participation in the commencement ceremony. (This does not mean only the proposal

defense). The graduation of the PsyD student is based on completion and defense of the entire and final

dissertation. The Dissertation has to be completed and defended no later than Spring I 2020.

Graduates should arrive at 12:30 P.M. PST, 90 minutes prior to the processional, for check-in and

participation in professional graduate photos. Graduates will be instructed by a faculty or staff member

to lineup at 1:30 P.M. PST, 30 minutes prior to the processional, by program and degree level as follows:

Guest Information

This is a ticketed event and each graduate is allotted a maximum of five (5) guest tickets. Tickets are

limited based on number of graduates eligible to participate in commencement ceremony and capacity

of the commencement ceremony location. This year’s commencement ceremony location is the Renée

and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall within the Segerstrom Center for the Arts at 600 Town Center Drive,

Costa Mesa, CA 92626 and will take place on Sunday, July 12, 2020 at 2:00 P.M. PST. Additional guest

tickets will be made available on Monday, June 1, 2020 and can be requested on a first come first serve

basis and are not guaranteed. Graduates (and participating faculty) do not require a ticket for

admittance. All tickets will be distributed to commencement candidates via the following schedule:

Service Animals/Pets

Animals or pets of any kind are prohibited in Segerstrom Center for the Arts with the exception of trained service animals and service animals in training for Patrons with disabilities. Service animals are welcome inside the venues, but must remain on a leash or in a harness at all times. Service animals will rest in the seating area of the individual with a disability, rather than in the aisle. A Patron whose service animal poses a threat to the safety of, or is causing a disturbance for, other Segerstrom Center for the Arts Patrons, performers, and employees may be asked to escort the animal off the premises. Service animals/pets will not be permitted on the stage at anytime.

South Coast Plaza. Segerstrom Center can be easily reached from either the 405 or the 55 Freeways,

with signage directing you to the Center.

Parking

Parking for the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall is located in the Plaza Tower Parking Structure

on the corner of Anton/Park Center Drive. There are parking spaces for guests with disabilities on every

level of the parking structure.

Current rates for event parking are $12 (cash only). Please note that the Center neither owns nor

operates any of these parking garages, and rates are subject to change.
