Be on the look out for your season membership renewal forms: next season will be spectacular!

Our concerts are recorded for the purpose of WPR broadcasts. If you are using oxygen, we ask that you please set your tank to a quiet, continuous flow if possible, so no extraneous noises are recorded. Thank you.

Welcome to our final Masterworks concert of the 2009-2010 Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra concert season.

Tonight we give you a taste of the world of opera. We’ve selected certain opera choruses, arias, and orchestral works that are very popular, yet the works on this program represent just a small sampling of the great, memorable, and moving music that one finds in opera.

The Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra always brings you music of great passion and intensity, music that we hope will inspire and affect you when you hear it in performance. Opera takes that to the next level: with the combination of plot, drama, beautiful words and great music—especially great singing—opera is perhaps the most passionate of all music.

It has been a wonderful experience to work with the many singers and choirs that make up the massed chorus you hear tonight. These singers will thrill you with their musicianship and the sheer power of their sound. Tonight they get to sing in characters ranging from bullfight spectators, Hebrew slaves in exile, gypsies, witches, pilgrims, and Egyptian commoners and priests.

We have many people to thank for making this large chorus possible; so many people worked hard to make this dream a reality: from the dedication of the individual singers to the great work of the choir directors, and even our Civic Center crew who found creative ways to fit us all on stage!

We are also thrilled to welcome Amy Johnson and Marc Schreiner as opera soloists singing Puccini. I admit it…they are singing many of my personal favorites. I feel, as many do, that Puccini’s music—as well as his dramatic scenarios and poetic librettos—stir us and resonate more deeply within us than almost any other opera music. Amy and Marc are singing roles of lovers, and their musical selections are so poetic, tender, and passionate.

And, of course, who can forget the great talents of our Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra players. There are so many juicy orchestral highlights from the world of opera, and I am pleased to feature these musicians in such works by Bizet, Saint-Saens, and Wagner. Again, this is just a fraction of all the great choices we had to choose from. For instance, it’s a shame we didn’t have time to include the Intermezzo from Mascagni’s Cavalliera rusticana.

Please join us in May at the Wyoming Hereford Ranch for our final event of the 2009-2010 concert season: Baroque in the Barn. This concert will feature primarily the leaders of our CSO string sections in works by Bach, sons of Bach, Handel, and others. As you know, the Hales treat concert-goers to a Western chuck wagon-style beef dinner before the concert. Such fun. And only in Cheyenne would you find beef and Bach in a barn!

We hope you enjoy tonight’s concert, and we thank you for your attendance and ongoing support of this orchestra. Be on the look out for your season membership renewal forms: next season will be spectacular!

The contributions of the Cheyenne Symphony Business Partners are a critical part of the continuing success of your symphony.

There are three levels of donations available to businesses interested in being a Cheyenne Symphony Business Partner. Gold Business Partners contribute $1,000 and sponsor Classic Conversations, a one-half hour informal conversation with the Maestro before each masterpiece concert; Silver Business Partners contribute $750; and Bronze Business Partners contribute $500. All partners receive varying proposal rewards based on their level of support.
