Stanley Cup championship runs of 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2008, and oneof the grinders on those teams that provided his share of those memoriesis Darren McCarty. The winger was a beloved player to fans because hecould drop the gloves, score clutch goals, and carried a likable person-ality. Despite his success on the ice, McCarty struggled with addiction,finances, and health issues – some of these issues he continues to battletoday.

McCarty shares inside stories from his 15-year professional hockeycareer and his life in a new memoir My Last Fight. He wrote the bookto share his story in the hope that others will learn from his struggles.

McCarty will talk his book in a conver-sation with WJR Radio Sports DirectorSteve Courtney during a multiple-chamber luncheon at Laurel Manor inLivonia on Friday, February 7.

Happy New Year! With the passage of 2013, it is an opportunity toreflect on the past year’s civic endeavors. Westland benefits from thepublic choosing to be involved in its civic life-as a community we arestronger for it. Thank you for your continued engagement and com-mitment to being an active partner in your own community.

As our Shop and Dine district has grown and evolved, new retailcenters, corridors and districts are also starting to emerge to serve res-idents and visitors. New retail opportunities continue to make a posi-tive economic impact throughout our City providing additionalinvestment and job creation.

While it is often the big deals and major developments that get theheadlines, it is Westland’s small business men and women who driveour economy on a daily basis, representing the vast majority of busi-nesses in our City. Our small business owners are among the mostvested members our community and are directly linked to the successof Westland.

My administration has and will always remain committed to findingnew and innovative ways to help our small businesses expand andgrow. Last month, on “Small Business Saturday”, I handed out giftcards at many of our small businesses with the intent to encourage ourresidents to invest in their City by shopping with locally owned busi-nesses and for locally made goods whenever possible. It was a greatway to leverage the purchases folks were already going to make tobenefit the growth and stability of our City. Let’s all work together tosupport small business in Westland!

During my most recent State of the City speech, I was pleased toannounce that our home on the internet, the City’s website, is gettingcompletely rebuilt from the ground up. My goal with this new websiteis to let our residents and business owners do business with the City24 hours a day. Our site is being designed to be compatible not onlywith a computer and laptops, but with mobile phones and tablets too.

I understand how busy life can get and the value of being able toskip the lines at the counters. Chamber & Rotary Team up for 2013 Taste FestOn Tuesday, December 3, 2013 over 350 people enjoyed Westland’s

premier charity event, the Holiday Taste Fest at the Hellenic CulturalCenter. For the second time, the Westland Rotary Club teamed up withthe Westland Chamber of Commerce raising funds for scholarships andother worthwhile projects in the community. This year’s event hosted11 restaurant/vendors treating guests to some of Westland’s best culi-nary treats. The stars of this year’s event were Hickory BBQ, who re-ceived the Culinary Excellence Award for having the best food andKnox Catering, for having the best table display.
