Commercial Architecture
The American Mall & Postmodern
mid-1970s - current
Postmodern Architecture can be wide-ranging and eclectic. Architecture which can be
double-coded, by combining modern materials with unique façades.
It was a way to redo historical styles again or regional styles in other areas,
yet still have modern functionality.
An aim was to design spectacular settings for work and to shop.
The American Mall developed into the new playground, taking consumerism away
from original Main Streets and independent businesses.

After fifty years of the modern style being forced onto the
American people, Robert Venturi rejected modernism for more
decorative details.
He developed a new architectural saying of “Less is a Bore” to
encourage architects to move away from the modern sleek styles.

The American Mall Malls are designed to attract particular clientele, such as Phipps Plaza,
which appears more affluent with marble & granite flooring
and grand staircases like past opera houses.
Notice how structural systems are still used today
with modern materials, such as in Tower City Center.
A more playful atmosphere was designed for Woodlands Mall,
displaying colorful animal sculptures.

Postmodern Here are three examples of the Gothic style being utilizing in different architectural periods.
Laon Cathedral & Milan Cathedral are original Gothic style from the Middle Ages.
From the early 20th C., The Woolworth Building represents a Neo-Gothic style from the Revivalism period .
The postmodern Pittsburgh Plate Glass building is reminiscent of this historical style in the late 20th C.

between cities about who has the tallest building in the world.
