Analysis needs different approach

either for a single project, or for all of their

CFD simulations.

For example, your projects might

require the inclusion of terms in the governing

equations which are normally neglected

(because they're very small in most cases).

Or, you might require a higher order

scheme than is commonly available (for an

acoustics application, perhaps).

Or maybe your budget just won't

stretch for the licensing costs.

If you need something besides the

commercial packages, there are many high

quality CFD solvers which are freely available

from one source or another

The Stanford University Unstructured (SU2) suite is an open-source

collection of software tools written in C++

Performing Partial Dierential Equation (PDE) analysis and solving PDE-

constrained optimization problems.

Toolset is designed with computational fluid dynamics and

aerodynamic shape optimization

Ideal for performing multi-physics simulations, including multi-species

thermochemical non- equilibrium flow analysis, combustion modeling,

two-phase ow simulations, magnetohydrodynamics simulations, etc.

However, it seems that SU2 is in its infancy and has a long way to be

mature and bug-free.

OVERFLOW

The OVERset grid FLOW solver is a software package for simulating fluid

flow around solid bodies using computational fluid dynamics.

It is a compressible 3-D flow solver that solves the time-dependent,

Reynolds-averaged, Navier-Stokes equations using multiple overset

structured grids.

Scientists use OVERFLOW to better understand the aerodynamic

forces on a vehicle by evaluating the flow field surrounding the vehicle..

OVERFLOW has also been used to simulate the effect of debris on the

space shuttle launch vehicle

Open FOAMThis code is a library of C++ routines that facilitates the numerical

solution of partial dierential equations.

Many different solvers (included with the software) have been built to

address many classes of problems.

Applications range from laminar incompressible flow to fully turbulent

reacting compressible flow.

OpenFOAM is freely available under the GNU Public License.

It solves partial differential equations on an unstructured meshes and

for post-processing, the distribution comes with a version of ParaView.

GERRIS

This CFD solver is developed by Stéphane Popinet, with support from the New

Zealand National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research.

Gerris solves the incompressible Euler, Stokes, or Navier-Stokes equations

using unstructured Cartesian meshes with immersed boundaries.

This allows the use of dynamic mesh refinement to automatically generate

quality grids around complex geometries

Best suited for unsteady flows.

But no turbulence models are available.

Gerris is freely available under the GNU Public License.

An open-source package for computational mathematical modeling. Has some

functionality to solve Navier-Stokes.

An open source software library for lattice Boltzmann CFD simulations

The system includes a lot of tools and an incompressible fluid-flow package called

FEATFLOW.

ISAAC

Developed mainly to test turbulence models.

OpenFlower

An open-source CFD code written in C++. Mainly focused on turbulent, unsteady

and incompressible flow.

enGrid

An open-source mesh generation software for CFD. enGrid uses the Netgen library

for tetrahedral grid generation and an in-house developed method for prismatic

boundary layer grids.

Netgen

An open-source tetrahedral grid generator. Not directly aimed at CFD

Discretizer

A GPL based free interactive tool to generate geometry and create hexahedral

meshes.

snappyHexMesh

A mesh generation tool supplied with OpenFOAM. Generates 3D hexahedral

meshes using STL geometries.

ABAQUS-simuliaAbaqus/CFD provides advanced computational fluid dynamics capabilities with

extensive support for preprocessing and postprocessing provided in Abaqus/CAE.

Address a broad range of nonlinear coupled fluid-thermal and fluid-structural

problems.

Abaqus/CFD can solve the following types of incompressible flow problems:

Laminar and turbulent: Internal or external flows that are steady-state or transient,.

Thermal convective: Problems that involve heat transfer and require an energy

equation and that may involve buoyancy-driven flows (i.e., natural convection) can

also be solved with Abaqus/CFD.

Turbulent heat transfer for a broad range of Prandtl numbers.

Deforming-mesh ALE: Deforming-mesh problems may include prescribed boundary

motion that induces fluid flow or the problems with the boundary motion is relatively

independent of the fluid flow.

Fluidyn

fluidyn-MP is a general numerical platform for the simulation of fluid structure

interactions and coupling.

fluidyn-MP simultaneously calculates heat conduction and mechanical stress, in

structures

It can also simulate vibratory - acoustics or pressure fluctuations

Pam flow

PAM-FLOW is an advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology

used to simulate unsteady flow phenomena present in a wide variety of

The exceptional transient accuracy of PAM-FLOW permits the simulation of

large-eddy or very large-eddy type simulations (LES) of unsteady and

turbulent fluid flow phenomena.
