Partnership for Clean Indoor Air
The Challenge
• Almost 3 billion people burn traditional fuels indoors for home cooking and heating.
• The number of people using these fuels is expected to rise substantially by 2020.
• More than 1.6 million people, mainly women and children, die prematurely each year from breathing elevated levels of indoor smoke.

About the Partnership for Clean Indoor Air (PCIA)
• Launched in Johannesburg at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002.
• Now over 120 partners from the public and private sector working together in 67 countries.
Partnership for Clean Indoor Air
PCIA’s Mission
• Improve health, livelihood, and quality of life through reduced exposure to air pollution, primarily among women and children, from household energy use in developing countries.
Partnership for Clean Indoor Air
PCIA’s Goal
• Increase the use of clean, reliable, affordable, efficient, and safe home cooking and heating practices that reduce exposure to indoor air pollution.
Partnership for Clean Indoor Air
Cross-cutting Issue
• Energy (LPG, renewables, wood…)• Deforestation/desertification• Gender (time, health, education…)• Health (air pollution, injuries, pests…)• Economic development (jobs, activities with time-
saved…)• Children’s Health (pneumonia, asthma, acute
lower respiratory infections …)

Strategies to Achieve Results
• Utilizing Partner networks, members, and expertise to accomplish goals.
• Flexible About “How” We Accomplish Our Goalso Each partner contributes what they do best.o There are many ways to accomplish the mission.o Solutions meet local needs and include a variety of fuel
types and practices.
• Clear About “What” the Goals Areo Mission driven.o Focused on increasing the use of clean, reliable,
affordable, efficient, and safe home cooking and heating practices to reduce exposure.
Partnership for Clean Indoor Air
Achieving Sustainable Development Goals
• Utilize a Comprehensive Approach:
o Address social and cultural barriers.o Support sustainable, local markets.o Meet design/performance criteria.o Demonstrate reduced exposure.
Partnership for Clean Indoor Air
Current Partnership Activities
• Providing a venue for collaboration among countries, NGOs, and the private sector.
• Exchanging information and lessons learned through outreach and communication.
• Developing country networks.
Partnership for Clean Indoor Air
Current Partnership Activities
• Developing tools and resources.o Partnership Web site: www.PCIAonline.orgo Quarterly Bulletino PCIA Design Principles for Wood Burning Cook Stoveso Catalog of Health and Exposure Monitoring Methods
• Building capacity in priority areas.
o Stove design and performance workshopso WHO regional health/exposure workshopso Commercialization workshops
• Implementing pilot projects to demonstrate effective approaches.
Partnership for Clean Indoor Air
Partner Pilot Projects
• Partners funding pilot projects throughout the world (Africa, Asia, Latin America).
• Sharing lessons learned.• Replicating projects that
promote improved cooking and heating practices that are more efficient, meet users’ needs, reduce exposures, and can be produced locally.
• Scaling-up effective approaches.
Partnership for Clean Indoor Air
Shell Foundation Breathing Space
♦ Over the last 4 years have supported projects which have disseminated over 250,000 stoves mainly employing commercial solutions.
♦ On track to reduce the IAP risk for 1 million households by 2008 and build over 500 successful enterprises in the stove supply chain
♦ SF vision to sell 20 million stoves, in the next 5 years employing $50mill
♦ The scale up strategy will require a blend of grant and “investment” funding (1:3)
♦ Focused and strategic but recognize that it is only one solution♦ Still a critical need to find a suitable technology that will deliver the
improved stove performance and the customers needs♦ Continued focus on Biomass to reach the most commercially
viable and significant scale customer segment ♦ Currently seeking interest from the private, NGO, government and
donor sectors to collaborate

Questions About PCIA
• To improve the lives of the more than 3 billion people affected by Indoor Air Pollution from Household Energy use and to achieve the Millennium Development Goals – we need to reach more than 450,000 people per day, every day, between today and 2015. We ask CSD14 to endorse this goal as a target and commit to long term public sector investments to achieve this goal.
