Reading Academies will be focused on TEKS

Focused cohorts across the state,

established by ESCs, LEAs, and/or non-profit organizations through

LOI process, will receive additional support and create resources for the

field

Goal: Reading Academies will grow teachers’ knowledge, understanding, and use of the new TEKS, based around both the TEKS guides and effective, research-based, and scientifically validated reading instruction methods.

All content will be available through the TEKS guides to ensure that teachers across the state have access

to professional development on the

new standards

Participants include K-5 teachers,

school leaders, district leaders, and optional ESC representatives

ESCs will be able to provide year-round

professional development on the new standards, which

may also include observations, feedback, and

instructional coaching

Assessment of the TEKS – Additional Steps

16

• Curriculum content staff members participate in TEKS review work groups meetings.

• TEKS Guides will explain each student expectation (SE) in detail.

• Teacher Institute discussions focus on the meaning of the TEKS and how they should be assessed.

• Revised assessment item specifications will go into greater detail regarding content expectations of each SE.

• Educator external committee meetings ensure each item is appropriately aligned to the intended SE.

Assessment Development

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Curriculum content staff members engage in conversations with TEKS review work groups about how the language of the standards will impact whether standards can be assessed and the manner in which they would likely be assessed. TEKS Guides will explain each student expectation (SE) in detail so that there is one interpretation of the standards throughout the state. Teacher Institutes have and will continue to focus on detailed discussions around the meaning of the TEKS at the breakout level and how they should be assessed. Assessment item specifications that instruct assessment item writers and are developed by curriculum staff will go into greater detail regarding content expectations of each SE. Educator external committee meetings focus first on whether an item is appropriately aligned to the intended SE. If an item is not appropriately aligned, it is revised or removed from the possible item bank.
