Measuring and Regulation FunctionFixed Orifice Double Regulating Valve (FODRV)The measurement function of the BALLOREX® VENTURI has been developed on the basis of proven technology.Flow measurements are taken at each valve prior to regulation. The improved accuracy of the Venturi unit ensures enhanced system performance. The unique design benefits of the BALLOREX® VENTURI simplify the installation process.

The function of the BALLOREX® VENTURI.

The flow through the valve is measured and calculated on the basis of the pressure difference generated through an orifice which is formed as a Venturi. The pressure

difference is called the ‘measure signal’. The Venturi’s special design provides a broad measurement range and a signal accuracy of +/- 3%. The accuracy is constant throughout the entire measurement range from 1 to 100kPa.

The Venturi is constructed with two sets of opposite facing holes, one set for the high pressure port and one set for the low pressure port.This ensures that the signal measurement is not affected by the installation direction of the valve – the test points may be facing directly up, down or to either side.

Due to the Venturi principle, large signals can be generated without significant pressure losses. The actual pressure loss throughout the valve is much smaller than the measure signal – i.e. 25%, thanks to the special design; most of the pressure loss is recovered immediately after the water has exited the Venturi.

The BALLOREX® VENTURI can reduce the losses in the system associated with the commissioning valve and therefore reduces energy consumption when compared to other types of balancing valves. Flow regulation in the BALLOREX® VENTURI DN 15-50 is achieved by adjusting the regulation needle. The regulation needle is situated within the orifice of the quarter turn isolation ball valve. When the valve is

isolated using the quarter turn function, the regulation needle remains static ensuring that the balance of the system remains when the valve is re-opened.

The up- and downstream lengths of straight tube required for accurate flow measurement are contained within the valve body. Therefore elbows, reducers and flexible hoses may be fitted directly to the valve without affecting the measuring performance. The BALLOREX® DN65-DN300 regulates and isolates using a butterfly valve. To ensure accurate flow regulation all units are supplied with a gear box allowing infinite adjustment. The gear box uses a unique memory stop system which allows the valve to be closed for isolation, but re-opened to the previously set regulation point.

The BALLOREX® VENTURI is available in two lengths, short and long. Please refer to pages 48-50 for installation details.

Measuring and Regulation FunctionVariable Orifice Double Regulating Valve (VODRV) Fixed orifice devices such as the BALLOREX® VENTURI have a signal related to the flow and a loss associated with the regulation needle position. Other types of commissioning valves, such as variable orifice devices, function slightly differently.

The signal measured with variable orifice type of devices change in relation to the regulation function as the signal is measured across the seat of the valve. This also affects the accuracy of the product, the

larger the opening of the valve, the more accurate the measurement up to +/-5%. As the valve is closed, accuracy will be reduced to +/-15%.

The signal measured at each set point of the variable orifice type device has a slightly different Kv value. Therefore as the valve is closed to balance the system, the engineer needs a new Kv-factor to recalculate the measured flow.

This type of valve has a high pressure loss, therefore the signals measured need to be as small as possible to minimise the effects on the system and maintain pump energy consumption.

A system with more than one (several) balancing valvesIf more than one valve is installed in a system, the adjustment of one valve has an impact on the flow of all other valves. Therefore a specific method has to be used to divide the flow within the system proportionally and create the balance required.

Conclusion:

The BALLOREX® VENTURI with a Fixed Orifice can be regulated without influencing the measurement accuracy.

It is difficult to adjust traditional Globe type balancing valves and take a flow measurement at the same time because the Kv-value changes with every change in the setting.

Where the Globe type valve is set with a reduced opening, accuracy is poor compared to accuracy when the valve is fully open.

Comparison between a BALLOREX® Venturi with Fixed Orifice and Variable Orifice Double Regulating Valves

BALLOREX® VENTURI valves with Fixed Orifice

• Attach the flow meter to the valve.Choose the product type, dimension and Kvs value of the Venturi

• Take the flow measurement and compare with the designed flow rate

• If the measured flow rate is not in agreement with the designed flow rate, adjust the valve accordingly

• This is possible because the valve has a fixed orifice and the Kvs value remains constant, irrespective of the setting of the valve

• It is necessary only to measure and adjust once per fixed orifice valve

• The adjustment of a BALLOREX® VENTURI valve is less time consuming than adjustment of other types of balancing valves

Variable Orifice Double Regulation Valves

• The adjustment of variable orifice double regulating valves is labour intensive

• The index valve is identified through the initial scan

• The valve setting is calculated.• The valve is then adjusted to the

calculated value• A flow reading is taken comparing

the actual flow measured against the designed flow

• If there is a difference between these two values, the setting of the valve has to be corrected as required.

• The measurement is then repeated. • If the measured flow rate is not in

agreement with the designed flow rate, the above procedure must be repeated

BALLOREX® VENTURI is a static balancing valve used to regulate flow, measure and isolate. BALLOREX® VENTURI is used where there is a demand for a hydraulic balance in a heating or cooling system. This is assured by the distribution of the flow in the pipe system in accordance with the calculated requirement of heating or cooling.

BALLOREX® VENTURI consists of a regulation and a flow measurement unit where the pressure differential signals are generated. The flow measurement unit is a Venturi nozzle which has a unique construction through which the flow is measured.

The flow is calculated based on the pressure differential measured across the Venturi nozzle. The measurement accuracy is better than +/- 3%, and this accuracy is maintained over the entire measurement range from 1 to 100kPa.

EXPLANATION OF FUNCTIONS

RegulationThe regulation needle is positioned within the isolation ball valve. The opening or closing of the needle controls the flow through the valve.The settings of the needle can be read on the digital scale of the handle where the figure on the black background shows the number of full rotations and the figure on the red background shows the 1/10 rotations.

IsolationThe valve can be used as an isolation valve. The regulation needle is positioned in the middle of the isolation ball; the isolation function does not alter the setting of the regulation needle. When the valve is installed, it is easy to identify if the valve is open or closed. When the handle is positioned at 90° to the pipe, it indicates

that the valve is closed. When the handle is in line with the pipe, it indicates that the valve is open.

Flow Measurement Flow measurement is via the Venturi nozzle. The Venturi has two pairs of outlet connections. One set for the high pressure or inlet side and one set for the low pressure or outlet side. The two sets of outlets are sealed from each other using an EPDM rubber O-ring. The pressure differential measured between the two sets of outlets can be used to calculate the actual flow passing through the Venturi. The pressure difference is measured with a BROEN FLOWMETER or equal and is converted to a flow rate in l/s or m³/h – either automatically via electronic measuring equipment or manually using the calculation formula.

* The flow rates given in the table are for water flow in steel pipes which provide a pressure loss of 100 to 500 Pa per meter pipe.

EXPLANATION OF THE FUNCTION

RegulationThe valve is adjusted by rotating the hand wheel on the gearbox. The water flow increases when the hand wheel is turned to the left (anti-clockwise) and reduces when it is turned to the right (clockwise). By using the BROEN FLOWMETER or similar the flow rate through the Venturi can be measured and at the same time the flow rate adjusted to meet the design requirements. When the desired flow rate has been achieved, the setting on the gear box can be locked on the memory stop. Once locked, the valve can be isolated, however, when re-opened the valve cannot travel past the pre-set position.

Isolation The valve isolates by turning the hand wheel to the right (clockwise) up to the “S” stamped on the gearbox. After the isolation has been completed, the valve is re-opened

to the pre-set position when the indicator cam hits the stop post. Please refer to page 36.

Flow Measurement Flow measurement is via the Venturi nozzle. The Venturi has two pairs of outlet connections (P/T plugs). One P/T plug for the high pressure or inlet side and one P/T plug for the low pressure or outlet side. The two P/T plugs are sealed by using rubber membranes. The pressure differential measured between the two P/T plugs of outlets can be used to calculate the actual flow passing through the Venturi. The pressure difference is measured with a BROEN FLOWMETER or equal and is converted to a flow rate in l/s or m³/h – either automatically via electronic measuring equipment or manually using the calculation formula.

Manual CalculationThe pressure loss across the valve is calculated as follows:

From the �pSignal we can calculated the flow rate through the Venturi valve.

The loss factor at setting 9.9 (fully open) multiplied by Signal gives the total pressure drop throughout the valve. The loss factor is found in the valve table for each valve size.

The valve dimensions can be chosen according to the pipe size, the measure signal (�pSignal) can be calculated based on the requested flow rate:

No requirements for straight pipe up- and downstream.

If a pump is installed immediately in front of the valve (commissioning valve installed on flow), a straight pipe of 5 x pipe diame-ter is required (upstream). No requirements for straight pipe sections after the valve (downstream).

No impurities may enter the valve or pipes before and during the installation.Adapt the gland material in such a way that no part of it enters the pipe system.

All pipe ends should be smooth with all burrs removed prior to the installation of a valve.

The flow rate through the BALLOREX® VENTURI FODRV can be measured with the BROEN FLOWMETER or other types of manometers. BALLOREX® VENTURI FODRV is supplied with two P/T plugs to measure the differential pressure across the Venturi. By measuring the differential pressure the flow rate can be calculated.

The flow rate can be regulated using an Allen key which engages the regulating spindle through the hole in the handle. If the Allen key is rotated to the left, the flow rate increases and it is reduced by turning to the right. The sizes of the Allen keys are 3mm for valves with the dimensions DN 15–25 and 5mm for DN 32–50.

The valve set point is best found by measuring the flow through the valve using the BROEN FLOWMETER and regulating the flow rate using the gearbox. The flow rate can be adjusted by rotating the handle

of the gearbox. The flow rate increases by rotating the handle to the left (anti-clockwise) and is reduced by rotating it to the right (clockwise).When the required flow rate has been achieved, the memory stop is locked. The memory stop is adjusted by loosening the screw (1) with a 3mm Allen key. The stop cam is then rotated to the stop post (2) and the screw (3) re-tightened. The memory stop is now locked.

Commissioning of water flow in pipelines for heating and cooling systems

The pipeline in a heating and cooling system is adjusted so that each circuit is assured a certain water quantity which has to be heated or cooled. Adjustments are done by installing the BALLOREX® VENTURI balancing valves which regulate the individual flows. The correct adjustment of the heating or cooling system is of great importance to the comfort and energy consumption of the building.

A specialist job The most simple and efficient way of regulating the water flow is by using the BALLOREX® VENTURI balancing valves and the BROEN FLOWMETER instruments of flow measuring described in this handbook. It is essential always to have the necessary knowledge and work hours available to accomplish this task. Making a quotation for heating or cooling system adjustments to a customer ample time must be allowed.

Advisors and engineers who do not have this specialist knowledge or capacity themselves have the possibility to contract this adjustment task from a trained specialist. When a specialist undertakes this job, he will certainly take on the responsibility that the heating or cooling system is adjusted according to the specifications given.

Proportional Method The simplest method of a correct adjustment of a heating or cooling system is using the Proportional Method described here. If the flow through a circuit is

changed, the flow in all parts of the circuit will change in the same proportion. This principle is the basis of the Proportional Method.

Preparations before balancingThe system should be completely drained of air and flushed out. Before balancing, it is recommended to clean all strainers. Furthermore it is an advantage if the system has been running for 24 hours or more, as there may be some inertia in the system.If the pump is a regulation pump (e.g. Grundfos type ALPHA+), it should be adjusted to keep a “constant pressure” during the balancing procedure.

In large systems the commissioning should be done by two engineers (‘A’+’B’), each with a flowmeter and a possibility of communicating with each other.

er‘A’ stands at the reference valve and informs ‘B’ about the varieties of the flow while ‘B’ is doing the balancing.

It is a great advantage if the valves have been defined and named prior to the balancing. The best way of doing this is by using the ‘tree structure’ below, the valve number indicates where in the ‘tree struc-ture’ the valve is placed.

The Proportional Method requests careful preparations to decide which of the risers and branches should be adjusted first.

Identify the risers using the larg-est λ-value’ (Lambda-value).

- All shunt, thermostat and BALLOREX® valves must be fully open

- Adjust the main valve at the pump to 100–110% of the requested flow

To identify the branches with the largest λ-valueWhen the risers are identified, continue with the branches - Measure the flow rate in each of the

branches and calculate their λ-value- In some branches the flow rate may be

higher than 100% of the requested water quantity

- Adjust these BALLOREX® valves to 110% of the requested flow rate

- Measure the flow rate again and calculate

the new λ-values- Start to balance the branches which have a λ-value larger or equal to 1. Begin with the branch which has the largest λ-value

The above sequence has to be followed to assure that the water quantities available in the rest of the circuit can be measured when you want to do so.In the following example it is assumed that riser 1.0 and branch 1.2.0 have the largest λ-values.

The balancing of branches - Measure the flow rate in every terminal

unit of the selected branch

- Calculate λ-values of all units in the branch

- Identify the unit with the lowest λ-value

(λmin), and call it the reference valve. This is typically valve 1.2.5 on the flowchart below

- Connect a flow meter in the reference valve for continued measuring, done by ‘A’

- Connect the second flowmeter in valve 1.2.4, done by ‘B’

- Set 1.2.4 so that λ4 = λ5 (λmin). Since the adjustment of 1.2.4 will change the flow rate in the reference valve, 1.2.4 has to be readjusted so that λ4 equals the new

λ5-value- Continue like this with the rest of the

valves in the branches. The next valve in this row is 1.2.3 - 1.2.2 - 1.2.1. When i.e. 1.2.2 is adjusted, 1.2.5 will change, but 1.2.3 and 1.2.4 remain equal to 1.2.5. The valves 3, 4 and 5 are therefore adjusted in relation to each other. This is why you only use one reference valve. This is the advantages offered by the Proportional Method

Continue this balancing procedure on all the other branches in the same riser.

The balancing of branch pipes on a riser When every terminal unit on the branch pipes is balanced, all branch pipes can be adjusted in relation to each another using the same procedures.

- Measure the flow rate of each branch pipe

- Calculate the λ-value of each branch and find the branch with the lowest λ-value (λmin)

- Typically it will be the 1.3.0 valve on the flowchart to the right

- Choose 1.3.0 as the reference valve- Insert a flowmeter in the reference valve

for continued measuring, done by ‘A’- Connect the second flowmeter in valve

1.2.0, done by ‘B’- Adjust 1.2.0 so that λ2 = λ3 and then 1.1.0

so that λ1 = λ3

Then the 1.0, 2.0 and so on and finally the main valve is adjusted or the pump pressure is lowered in order to have the flow in the main valve at 100% of the designed flow.

List all valves with their position numbers, as mentioned above, valve type, dimension and the designed flow rate. In the next column you’ll find the space to write down all measurement results and valve adjustments.

The extended spindles are designed to ensure that only the inner spindle rotates when the handles are moved during the isolation function, thus preventing the vapour shield from being damaged

BALLOREX® MVS units are assembled to the customer specifications. This is achieved by selecting the different components so that the unit meets all requirements.

DESCRIPTION OF FUNCTIONING

1. The forward flow flush: Isolate the bypass and inlet isolation ball valve on the Y- pat-tern strainer valve. Attach the hose union to the drain and flush any dirt or other impuri-ties out of the system.

Pre-commissioning

2. Bypass flush: Isolate the BALLOREX®

VENTURI balancing valve and flow isolation valve module. Then open the bypass isola-tion valve and flush debris and dirt from the main flow and return pipes.

3. Return flush: Isolate the flow isolation valve and BALLOREX® VENTURI. Attach a hose union to the drain point. Open the BALLOREX® VENTURI commissioning valve and allow any debris to leave the system via the drain.

After the flushing, the BALLOREX® VENTURI is adjusted to “normal operation”. Remem-ber to isolate the bypass valve and open all others. Then the balancing valve is adjusted with a 3 mm Allen key.

Balancing valve handling

Flow Regulation - In the centre of the isolation ball valve is a needle valve; the flow is regulated by opening or closing the needle. The settings of the needle can be read on the digital scale of the handle where the figure on the black background shows the number of full rotations and the figure on the red background shows the 1/10 rotations.

Isolation - The valve can be used as an isolation valve. The regulation needle is positioned in the middle of the isolation ball; the isolation function does not alter the setting of the regulation needle. When the valve is installed, it is easy to identify if the valve is open or closed. When the handle is positioned at 90° to the pipe, it indicates that the valve is closed. When the handle is in line with the pipe, it indicates that the valve is open.

Flow measuring - Flow measurement is via the Venturi nozzle. The Venturi has

two pairs of outlet connections. One set for the high pressure or inlet side and one set for the low pressure or outlet side. The two sets of outlets are sealed from each other using an EPDM rubber O-ring. The pressure differential measured between the two sets of outlets can be used to calculate the actual flow passing through the Venturi. The pressure difference is measured with a BROEN FLOWMETER or equal and is converted to a flow rate in l/s or m³/h – either automatically via electronic measuring equipment or manually using the calculation formula.

The BALLOREX® MVS is suitable for use with other types of commissioning valves and can be supplied without any commissioning unit. The BALLOREX® MVS unit is suitable for use with a dynamic (automatic) or thermo actuated commissioning valve on heating or cooling systems, controlled by a room temperature sensor.

BROEN FLOWMETER is an instrument to measure liquid flow or pressure differences to create hydraulic balance in heating and cooling systems. It is a handheld instrument and very compact. Its handling is simple and easy. The pressure sensors are built into the instrument and are connected to the system by the use of hoses with measuring needles.

The characteristic feature of the BROEN FLOWMETER is its great measuring accuracy, furthermore it can be used as a data-logger. The instrument is prepared for flow measuring on the BALLOREX® VENTURI balancing valves, but it can also be used for flow measuring on other valve products like Oventrop, Danfoss, and TA. You can programme the BROEN FLOWMETER with other Kv-values yourself, this creates the possibility of measuring on nearly all flow-measuring units.

For valves with fl ow measuring units – type FODRV – a diagram is shown where measuring signals ΔP [kPa] are directly converted into a fl ow rate in l/s and m3/h.Besides, the formula to calculate the fl ow rate is shown. In case of an adjustment, the setting of the valve is changed until the measuring signal indicating the requested fl ow rate comes up. The mea-suring is taking place continuously during the adjustment.

For valves without a fl ow measuring unit – type DRV – there is a diagram for each position of the valve setting.In the diagram the fl ow rate can be read in l/s and m3/h for each position at a given pressure (kPa).
