Commodore’s Log

October brought some great weather, and with it we had some

great Regattas, and a lot of fun! I would like to thank everyone who helped or participated. Getting involved is what makes events like these so special.

I would also like to mention the MYC Big Boat Regatta. The Adult Opti Pram Championship took place on the traditional Thursday before the Re-gatta. As usual, this series was conducted in accordance with the “Grandest of Past Tradition and Practices”. This year’s racing was officiat-ed by Principal Race Officer (and Past Commodore) Pat Lambert. This year’s competitors included racing skippers and tacticians from PHRF, One-Design, and the power boat fleets. Yes, everyone was invited, and the results: Third Place was shared by Past Commodore Page Profitt and One-Design Skipper Tony Godden – and no, they were not in the same pram. Second Place went to Collegiate 420 Skipper Connor Cassi-dy. First Place and the title of 2017 MYC Adult Opti Pram Champion went yours truly, Commodore Eric Stord. I will hold the title for the year and fully expect to defend it at the next Fall Regatta, all comers welcome.

Our holiday events are coming up this month and next. I hope everyone will take the opportunity to come out and enjoy the season with fellow members in the spirit of the season. By the way, this is also the time year when we try to take care of a few things around club as well, so put on your volunteer gear and lend a hand. You’ll be glad you did.

Eric Stord / Commodore

P.S. It is with such profound sorrow that we must say goodbye to three Members this month: Commodore Rose Baker, Mary Ann Seiler, the “Commodore-able”, wife of Past Commodore Skip Seiler, and Principal Race Officer Gerry Moores. All three of these members were wonderful people who served the Melbourne Yacht Club, and our charter of promot-ing Sailing.

We wish them fair winds and following seas, a beam reach to the distant shore where they will be reunited with loved ones who have gone before. As we see their sails go over the horizon and feel the sorrow of our loss, we must remember that this is their journey. Our comfort is found in the belief that they are arriving to cheers on the distant shore, and they will be there to cheer our arrival when our time comes. To everyone, may peace be with you and your families.

House The House Committee has had another busy month doing a wide variety of activities around the MYC campus preparing to tear down the tire store, preparing for the roof repair and other general activities around the club.

The big news is the Tire Store is no more. As you can see in the picture, the demolition has happened. The removal of the building was completed on November 3. This will give the MYC a lot more parking spots, removes an eyesore, and improves the safety on the MYC campus.

I want to thank Del Weise who led this effort to make this happen. Thank you, Del! The end result looks very good.

We will be scheduling a work day to finish cleaning up the wall (pressure washing/painting) behind the tire store. Look for the announcement shortly.

Gregg Kowalski / Vice Commodore / House

Fleet

October was a busy month with three regattas scheduled: the J-24 Re-gatta with EGYC and our two Fall Regatta Weekends. Attendance was lower than anticipated at all three due to Hurricane Irma's effects around the state as

well as poor weather predictions for the regatta weekends. We had 26 Small Boat Regatta entries with half paying late fees. There were 16 Big Boat Regatta Entries.

IRYC has volunteered to take over Dragon Point Racing after being requested to do so by the J-24 Fleet 87 captain. The J-24 fleet are the predominant users of the Dragon Point Series. The change will begin in January.

The Mermaid Regatta is scheduled for December 2nd. This will be a big boat fleet only as there are conflicting regattas which make a small boat turnout unlikely.

Membership Final membership approval was granted to Margo Redmond (Corinthian) and to Alex Bajraszewski (Resident).

Now we would like to introduce our newest membership applicants.

Russell (Russ) & Bertha (Bert) Bradley, Resident, sponsored by Charlotte Parker

Russ has been around boats all his life. He and his wife Bert currently own a 36' power boat. Russ works for Health First and is in charge of customer service and satisfaction. Russ and Bert are also new franchise owners of a business that has a new revolutionary method for stretching.

Russ and Bert have been to several of our TGIFs and attended a general membership meeting. They are ready to pitch in and are looking forward becoming part of the MYC family.

Geoffrey Swain, Resident, sponsored by Melissa Tribeau

Geoffrey has been around the club for quite some time crewing with our members. He has sailed with Chris Gates, Paul Anstey, Floyd Bryan, and Craig Rastello. He recently attended our Fall Regatta and has decided that it is time to join. He owns a 14' Hobie Wave. He works at FIT, which is how he knows Melissa

Bob & Shawna Patterson, Resident, sponsored by Frank Dawson

Bob has been sailing with the small boat sailors. He grew up sailing on Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana. Their daughter, Carmen Patterson, sailed with her dad in a 420 in the Fall Small Boat Regatta. Carmen is also participating in the Youth Sailing Foundation.

Bob’s sailing resume is impressive. In 2008 he competed in the Sunfish World's championship in Italy. He was also active with 505s and with Wetas. Bob is willing to assist with sailing education and race committee during regattas.

Jack Mueller, Corinthian, sponsored by Phil Spletter

Jack is a full-time student at FIT. He has been active with the Youth Sailing Foundation for quite some time. He enjoys being on the water.

I am really enjoying getting to know members. I have heard that in the past the families would be down at Marker 21 almost every weekend. Frank Dawson and his family go to Marker 21 a lot. I asked if we could talk up a trip to Marker 21 specifically targeted for young families. We want to create opportunities for this segment of our membership to meet and bond. If you are a family with children and want to get more family activities on the calendar, please e-mail me at [email protected].

Charlotte Parker / Membership Director

Celebration of Life of Gerry Moores To everyone who has extended love and comfort to each other at this time of our loss of Gerry Moores, thank you. His Celebration of Life will be on Sunday, December 10. Reception begins at 2 pm. A gathering of boats at Dragon is planned that morning for a memorial to start at 1100 hours. Anyone planning to bring their boat to the service who has room to give a ride, let me know so we can get those on boats that want to come.

Orphan’s Thanksgiving Come join your MYC family at the 2017 Orphan's Thanksgiving Dinner at 2 PM on Thursday, November 23. This event is intended for those who have little or no family in the area over Thanksgiving.

The dinner will be served buffet style, and then we will all sit at one big family table. Each person/group of two, is expected to bring a dish to serve 8-10, and to do a chore, such as helping set up, help in the kitchen, or clear off, or put away the tables and chairs.

The cost will be about $7-8 per person, still TBD. That will include turkey, basic stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, and coffee. Please use a chit that day to cover all members of your party. No cash will be accepted.

The Bar will be open at 1 PM, with some hors d'oeuvres, and inner will be served at 2 PM. No outside liquor is allowed, only that served at the Bar. Non-alcoholic beverages will be available.

The deadline to sign up is Monday, November 20. The number of diners will be limited to 38, as that is all that will fit around the big table, and the number of people we had last year.

Email Carol Mairs at [email protected] with your name, contact info, and the number of people in your party (maximum of four). She will then contact you with the list of dishes and chores still needed. The sooner you sign up, the greater your choices will be.

Orphan’s Thanksgiving 2015

Entertainment John Frinzi, a nationally known Trop Rock musician, performed at the clubhouse on a rainy Sun-day afternoon of October 1st. This concert was free for MYC members, and many attended. John enjoyed our venue so much, he wants to come back for another concert and to bring some of his musician friends with him.

The Seafood Raft-up scheduled for November 4, 2017 was canceled. Only two boats signed up.

On Saturday, November 18, 2017, 8 am to noon, we will decorate the clubhouse for the Holidays! There will be free breakfast and coffee! Please, come out and help deck our halls.

Thanksgiving, November 23, 2017, 2 to 5 pm. Carol Mairs is organizing Orphan's ThanksgivingDetails in the article above.

Sunday, December 3, 2017. After the rum race, come out for Dick Tillman's 81st birthday and a celebration of Linda Tillman's life. We will share cake, food, and a special toast. Bring your best memories and stories. For-ward any pictures of the couple you may have, and we'll get the slide show on the TVs. Come out to celebrate these people who are so special to the club. Send pictures and stories to Sunny, [email protected]

Saturday, December 9, 2017. Gail Martin is organizing the MYC 2017 Christmas Party. Jerry Ross cheerfully agreed to bring Santa and a few Elves in on Sleighride. Amy Lacy will take care of the presents for the kids, and read a Christmas story. Cathy Kowalski will be Mrs. Claus again this year. Please, let Gail know what you can do to help with this wonderful event. See the separate flyer inside this newsletter for the details.

Lynn Duerbeck volunteered to chair the New Year's Eve Party this year! Please, tell Lynn what you can do to make this yearly event a great success!

Plans for the club in the works for the next couple of months, more details to follow: Orphan's White Elephant exchange and Christmas Day Dinner; January clubhouse garage sale; January and February Trop Rock club-house concerts by Jimmy Parrish, Dave McKenney with Emily Randle, and others.

If you have an event or an activity that you would like to see happen at the club, please, let me know, or drop a note into the suggestion box. We can never have too much fun!

Dock Notes Now that the water level is receding, we’ll be able to start to repair the dinghy dock. The sea wall replacement will be starting up in early December.

Please make time to look at the diameter and type of your dock lines. Please check all lines on your boat and replace as required.

Recommended line diameters are as follows:

Although there are many fancy options available for dock lines, NYLON three-strand is likely preferred as it s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-s. Lines made of other materials, such as those used around many of our sailboats SHOULD NOT be used to secure your boat, especially in heavy weather.

With the tire store gone, we’re really out of dry storage for boats. The Club Rules allow you to have only one boat on the property unless you have a dinghy and a boat in a wet slip. The exception to this rule is only for small boats that are stored in tandem as it’s all about “footprint”.

I have been receiving complaints that there are some boats on the property that never seem to go out. Our facility is not a storage yard; it should be used for active boaters. If you’re not using your boat, please remove it – storing it at the club is not good for the boat and it’s not good for the club. The rules require that all dry stored boats be used at least quarterly. If you’re not using your boat on a regular basis, please make other arrangements for storing your boat elsewhere as we have active sailors looking for storage.

Please feel free to email me with any issues/suggestions/recommendations/etc. at: [email protected]

Grog Locker The Bar and Kitchen are doing well. I returned from vacation to a bar that was in great shape due to the help of my great Bar Committee. There were no problems with any equipment this month — always a good thing. My committee cleaned up the kitchen refrigerator while I was gone. Let’s all try to keep it clean and watch the food being put in it through the holidays with events going on. We have replaced the kitchen microwave, which should be helpful during the holidays.

I have been contacted by Dave Hutson – the Grand Canal Boat Parade Party and Pot Luck Dinner are on again this year on Saturday, December 16th. I will be sending out all the information in my next email blast.

The Bar and Kitchen will be offering lunch on Wednesday, November 15th.

Any of our members can put on an event at the club. If you would like to organize something special, just get with me. We can put it on the calendar and get things started.
