On July 26, 2012, English department at Midland High School, Jennifer Albrecht, Matt Butcher, and Dean Poignant, discussed how we would reach each Common Core Standard in our department. Below are our notes: Reading Standards for Literature 6-12 Common Core Standard How we are going to cover the standard in grades 9-10 1.) Citing strong textual evidence weeklies, research paper, comprehension questions on stories, Bloom’s questions, answer and provide proof 2.) Determining theme grade 12 dystopian theme paper, theme questions on quizzes and unit exams in which students have to provide textual evidence 3.) Author’s choice of complex characters studying character development in novels and discussing importance of setting 4.) Word meaning/ language impact studying history documents such as the Constitution, Old English vs Modern English, poetry 5.) Author’s choice of structure In all texts, we teach key terminology such as; plot structure, rise and fall, climax, flashback, foreshadowing. The students will identify and explore the importance of structure in each particular text. 6.) Point of view/ world Lit, satire, irony, sarcasm, understatement Beowulf studies British Lit., A Modest Proposal is a satirical piece. Comic strips to portray sarcasm and irony 7.) Key scene in different mediums & different interpretations of same text Rockwell’s problem, key scenes in movies vs. novels; how are they portrayed differently? 8.) N/A N/A 9.) Knowledge of American Dream American Lit., The Great Gatsby, Native American history documents. How is the dream different? Overarching theme throughout all texts. Goal is that students understand how different authors portray this theme. 10.) Read and comprehend grade level self evaluations

Writing Standards 9-10

1.) Arguments with valid reasoning JR research paper; presenting an argument and acknowledging the counter argument

2.) Research Paper multi- paragraph claims, researching Native American authors

3.) Real experiences narrative JR personal narrative paper that will be the first step to the research paper

4.) Clear and coherent writing weeklies, essay test questions, research paper

5.) Revising and Editing Any extensive paper in our classes will include revision and editing.
