Guiding Principles
• The Common Core State Standards identify what
students need to know and be able to do in each
grade level in order to be prepared for college and
career.
• Teachers will decide the
best way to teach their
students in order for them to
meet Common Core
expectations.

Anchor Standard 4: Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings,
and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone.
Anchor Standard 4 – Primary Grades

Ask and answer questions about unknown words in a text.
Grade 1
Identify words and phrases in stories or poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses.

Instructional Shifts in ELA
• Balance of fiction and non-fiction
• Gaining knowledge of the world through
non-fiction
• Text complexity
• Evidence-based conversation about text
• Writing from sources – departure from
narrative
• Vocabulary – everyone teaches reading
Instructional Shifts in Math
• Focus – greater depth, less breadth
• Coherence
• Rigor which requires:
Fluency – math facts
Deep conceptual understanding
