DESCRIPTION

Houston-based industrial air cleaning manufacturer, Sentry Air Systems, celebrates Manufacturing Day 2014 by highlighting common manufacturing processes that emit fume, vapor and particulate that may cause adverse health effects if inhaled. Proper engineering safety controls should be used to protect operators from breathing contaminated air.

Sentry Air Systems is celebrating Manufacturing Day 2014 by shedding light on common manufacturing processes that generate dust, fume and particulate that may be harmful if inhaled.

As a manufacturer of industrial air filtration systems, we understand the importance of safety and health in the workplace and strive to provide superior air filtration systems that protect the operator.

Studies have found that Ultrafine Particles are emitted from desktop 3D printers during operation. This occurs when the feedstock filament is heated. Filament materials can include styrene, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and polylactic acid (PLA). Practically invisible to the naked eye, it is vital to implement a source-capture system to capture these particles. If inhaled, UFP may potentially deposit in the lungs and in the head's airways; allowing travel through the olfactory nerve and into the brain.

PCB & Electronic Abrasive BlastingIn order to perform changes or fixes to electronic boards, the protective layer of conformal coating must be removed. This can be done through abrasive blasting whereby a cutting media is introduced into a compressed air stream which is ejected through a hand held nozzle. The air stream is directed at the area on the board where modifications need to be made. This process uses a variety of cutting media which produce fine dust particulate. This dust should not be inhaled as it may affect the upper respiratory and central nervous system.

Polyurethane Foam DustPolyurethane foam is used in a variety of products and industries. The primary adverse health effects of this material are related to the dust created by sanding, grinding or cutting the cured foam. Inhaled dust may irritate mucous membranes with tightness in chest. Adequate ventilation should be employed so that dust levels do not exceed recommended guidelines.

Epoxy & Adhesives

capture of organic epoxy and adhesive vapor.

Respiratory precautions should always be considered when working with liquid, partially-cured, and fully cured epoxy. Vapors and particles can form when liquid epoxy evaporates and when partially-cured or fully-cured epoxy is sanded. If inhaled, these particles may cause inflammation and irritation of the nose, throat, and lungs, which may eventually result in sensitization or occupational asthma.

Plastic Injection MoldingDuring the injection molding process, thermoset and thermoplastic materials are melted, injected into molds, rapidly cooled and released; all the while emitting hazardous fumes. Studies on the constituents found in common plastic fumes revealed a host of hazardous chemicals, each with adverse health effects once inhaled.

chamber; scrubbing the air of hazardous contaminants.

Laser Etching & EngravingParticulate and gas released during laser applications are harmful to both the operator and the laser system itself. The inhalation of laser fumes can lead to long-term medical conditions and can cause expensive medical claims for employers. Depending on the target material, applying a laser beam may produce fumes containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PACs), hydrogen cyanide and benzene, heavy metals, and formaldehyde and synthetic fibers.

Spray Paint & Aerosols

Many professional-grade spray paints contain VOCs which include both human-made and naturally occurring chemical compounds.VOCs are emitted as gases and/or vapors from certain solids or liquids and include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. Harmful VOCs are typically not acutely toxic, but instead have compounding long-term health effects.
