ABSTRACT

This paper titled, “Common Windows Errors and Their

Solutions” is a suggestive paper, comprising of the solutions to

the common occurring problems in windows, during our day to

day interaction with the software.

INTRODUCTION

In this tech era, Computers are an indispensable part of our lives,

with its involvement in each and every routine activity. This

brilliant computing machine however is not perfect and therefore

gives us troubles from time to time. In this paper, we have

worked on troubleshooting the common windows problems,

whose solutions are rarely available on the internet. Users usually

encounter such software issues, for which formatting may not be

the apt, but troublesome and laborious solution. Herein, we have

shed light on 15 most commonly found errors and the ways to

easily and systematically troubleshoot the same.

SOME COMMON WINDOWS ISSUES:

Enumerated below are some of the commonly found windows

errors :-

Problem1: Changing Window’s 7 logon screen wallpaper.

Solution:

Step 1: Press Windows + R to open Runr and type regedit and

press enter.

Step 2: Goto Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFT-

WARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\

LogonUI

Step 3: click OEMBackground, and change its value to 1.

Step 4: Press Windows + R to open Runr and paste :

%windir%\system32\oobe to go to the oobe folder and create a

folder named info, and open it.

Step 5: Create a folder in info named backgrounds.

Step 6:Change the name of the image that you want as

background as Default.jpg and copy it in the folder backgrounds

(Maximum size of image is 245KB).

Restart your pc. You will notice the change logon screen

wallpaper has been applied.

Problem 2: Changing Window’s 7/vista/xp folder

background without software.

Solution:

We can change the background of a folder in Windows7 as

follows:

This can be done by editing the desktop.ini file.

Desktop.ini is a system generated configuration file which

contain the values of icon, source of background image etc. It is

a hidden system file and it's possible to view it by performing

the following series of steps:

(a) Open any drive and click on the “Organize” tab.

(b) From the Menu, select “Folder and Search” option.

(c) Click on the “View” tab.

(d) Click on the radio button, “Show hidden files, folders and

drives” under the “Hidden files and folders” option.

(e) Uncheck “Hide protected operating system files” option.

In case, this file is accidently damaged or absent, there is nothing

to worry about it as the system automatically creates a new one.

restart the system.

To set an image as the background in a folder follow the steps

given below:

Creating a desktop.ini file:

1. Go to the folder whose background image you want to change

and create a new text file in it.

2. Copy the following lines and paste them into the text file you

just created

[AveFolder]

IconArea_Image = " Path to image \image.jpg "

3. replace the path to image with the path to the folder where

you have the image you want to be placed as background is

stored.

4. Save the file and rename it to desktop.ini and restart your PC.

Problem 3: Reloading album art cache in Windows media

center:

Solution:

It happens sometime that when we changed the album art of

some files the changes are not reflected in windows media center

that is a software to organize and play media files both audio and

video.This happens because Media Center uses an album art

cache that is created once and never checked for consistency.

This causes media center to ignore the changes that we vmake to

the file,s properties.We can resolve this by making media center

to reload the album art cache as follows-:

Step 1:

1.1 Open any drive and click on the “Organize” tab.

1.2 From the Menu, select “Folder and Search” option.

1.3 Click on the “View” tab.

1.4 Click on the radio button, “Show hidden files, folders and

drives” under the “Hidden files and folders” option.

Step 2: Go to C:\Users folder and open your user folder which

has the same name as your username. Open the folder

AppData\local\Microsoft\ehome.

Step 3: you will see a a folder named Art Cache. Delete this

folder.

Step4: restart the pc, this will force album art cache to be

reloaded by the windows media center and the changes in the

album art will be visible.

Problem 4: Printing a file using one note

Solution:

Ever thought of printing without a printer? Yes, it can be done by

saving it to a file for printing. This option is usually helpful when

you fill an online form and it just gives an option to print not

save.

To do this, follow the steps viz-a-viz:

1. Click on print button or press ctrl + p.

2. Select send to one note from the list of available printers and

click ok.

3. The file will open in one note.

4. Open file menu n select save as pdf to save as pdf or any other

format available.

Problem 5: Missing one note printer in devices and printers.

Solution:

“Send To OneNote 2007 printer” is missing in the Printer list.

To resolve this issue, use the following steps:

1. We need to install a generic printer driver in Windows7 by

following the steps given below:

a) From start menu open devices and printers.

b)Click add a printer option from the menu at the top.

c) An Add Printer dialog box will open, click Add a local printer.

d) Select the “Use an existing port” option, select any port except

if it is a port related to any physical printer, and then click

“Next”. For example, you can select LPT1.

e) Select Generic from Manufacturer and in printer select

Generic / Text only and then click next.

f) Click next, and then click finish.

2. Now we need to configure the generic printer for OneNote. To

do this, follow the steps given below:

(a) Again open devices and printers. and right-click the printer

that you just added, and click Properties.

(b)From the Ports tab, and select the “Send To Microsoft

OneNote” Port check box.

(c) From the Advanced Tab, select Send to Microsoft OneNote

Driver in the Driver list.

(d) Click Print Processor from Print processor, select

OneNotePrint2007, and select RAW from Default data type and

then click OK

Problem 6: Data sharing between pc and android without

data cable

Solution:

Use the following steps:

Step 1: Connect pc and laptop to same wireless network. It can

be any wifi network, even wifi hotspot running on the same

phone.

Step 2: A software namely the ES File Explorer must be installed

in the phone. It will be needed to perform the series of steps that

follow.

Step 3: Tap the remote manager feature in ES explorer and turn

it on.

Step 4. Turning it on will give an ip address.

Step 5. Enter the address in internet explorer or any other web

browser and the phone will open in the browser.

Step 6.Click on view menu and select open ftp site in windows

explorer to open site in explorer.

Problem 7: Expanding a drive size without formatting the

pc. Solution: 1. Right click on my computer and go to manage.

2. Select disk management.

3. Right click on the drive from which you want to take out

space to add to another drive and click shrink volume.

4. Select the amount of space to be removed and click shrink.

5. The shrinked space will be available as unallocated space and

will be shown in black.

6. Right click on the drive that you want to expand and click

extend volume.

7. Click next and finish.

Problem 8: Manually updating the virus definitions for an

anti-virus.

Solution:

These instructions are for avira internet security but can be

applied to almost all antiviruses with minor changes.

Proceed as follows to update your Avira Software manually:

1. Download the most recent Avira Fusebundle Generator

straightforward from the Avira site on an alternate PC with

Internet access.

2.Use winrar to extract the downloaded zip file

3. Run fusebundle.exe.This will open a avira decompressor tool

that will generate the vdf-virus definition file

6.In a folder called Install created by fusebundle generator you’ll

find the file vdf_fusebundle.zip.

7. Copy the file vdf_fusebundle.zip to portable storage device

such as a pen drive for copying it to the PC without internet

connection.

8. Plug the storage device into the PC whose antivirus you want

to update.

9. Open Avira Control Center by right clicking it from its tray

icon.

10.From update menu select Manual update.

11. select the file vdf_fusebundle.zip and click finish .

Problem 9: Not being able to dismount drive safely.

Solution: To do this, we need to utilize the utility called

unlocker.

Step 1: If we have a drive that we can’t remove safely as it shows

an error like drive in use.

Step 2. Right click on the drive and click unlocker (unlocker

option will be available only after installing unlocker)

Step 3. The drive will open in unlocker and it will show which

processes are restricting the drive.

Step 4. We can either unblock the drive by using unblock if this

fails we also have an option to kill the processes.

Step 5. Try again to remove safely the drive will be safely

removed.

Problem 10: Solution to missing DVD drive in my computer.

Solution:

Sometimes the dvd/cd drive icon does not appear in my

computer or device manager this can be fixed by following

steps:

Step 1: Press Windows + R to open Runr and type regedit and

press enter.


Step 2 : Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\

CurrentControlSet\ Control\Class \ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-

BFC1-08002BE10318}.

Step 3 : You will find keys named upper filter and lower filter

delete them.

Step 4 : Restart your computer the drive will start appearing in

my computer.

Problem 11: Disabling a damaged speaker in laptop.

Solution:

To do this open sounds in control panel.

Click on the speakers that has a green tick and click on properties

select the levels tab.

Click on balance and turn the balance of the speaker that you

want to disable to zero.

Click ok and done.

Problem 12: Downloading YouTube playlist using IDM at

once.

Solution:

1. To do this we can use add on in firefox called

“bytubed”.

2. Install the add on bytubed in firefox.

3. Open the playlist that you want to download right click

and select bytubed.

4. Dialogue box will open select the files that you want to

download and in what to do drop down list select

”generate links” click start.

5. Links will be generated in a html file right click on it

and select download all links with idm to download the

playlist using internet download manger.

6. The files will be added n downloaded using idm.

Problem 13: Closing or opening windows explorer without

logging off.

Solution: This can be used when you need to close windows

explorer to install some software or to open it when some

software accidentally closes it.

To close

1. Press ctrl+alt+esc to open task manager.

2. Go to processes tab select explorer.exe and click end process.

3. The explorer will be closed and the desktop will look

something like this without icons.

To open

1. Press ctrl+alt+esc to open task manager.

2. Go to applications tab select new task and write explorer.exe

and click ok.

Problem 14: Installing and running software’s built for old

operating systems.

Solution:

1. Right click on the exe and select properties.

2. Click compatibility tab and select run this program in

compatibility mode check box.

3. Select the operating system that you want to select from the

drop down list.

Problem 15: -Manually removing software components that

remain after uninstalling.

Solution:

To do this press ctrl+r to open run wizard.

• Type regedit.exe.

• Registry will open.

• Press ctrl+f search box will open type the name of

software whose remnants you want to remove.

• It will search for keys related to this software delete

them manually.

• Search for next key by pressing f3.

CONCLUSION

We must remember that the computer was the vision and

creation of a Human and no invention is bigger than the

inventor. Instead of letting it turn into a behemoth due to lack of

knowledge on your part, interact and know your computer better.
