Principal’s VisionFor

Communication & Media Arts H.S.

The vision for Communication and Media Arts High School is to establish a professional learning organization that promotes learning of its members. It is an organization that nurtures its students through rigorous academic engagement. The organization will instill in its instructional leaders the willingness to provide engaging, student centered instructional practices, tasks and strategies. The principal will act as the leader of instructional leaders providing support, direction and resources.

Communications and Media Art High School will also pursue the engagement of parents, guardians and the community as a supplemental support system to enhance this professional learning organization. The entire process will be carried out in a physical setting that is clean, safe and otherwise conducive to academic excellence.

The organizations primary function is to increase student learning and achieve through best instructional practices and the use of technology.

SCHOOL POLICIES/PROCEDURES

Staff Assignments:

Teaching assignments are made to best service our students. However, this year CMA has incurred several unforeseen instructional staff loses. With the rigid CMA curriculum and schedule, the instructional scheduling was very difficult. Adjustments to the schedule may take place within the first four weeks of the semester. The changes in the schedule will be based on what is best for the student.

The CMA Work Day:

Teacher’s contractual work day is 7:45 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. Teachers are required to be on active door duty at 7:45 a.m.; first hour classes start at 8:00 a.m. All instructional staff members are expected to begin instruction promptly at 8:00 a.m.

Classroom Repairs:

Notify the assistant principal of any needed classroom repairs or furniture shortages.

Classroom Supplies:

Notify the assistant principal for classroom repairs or furniture shortages.

Lesson Plans, Syllabuses, and Major Project Schedule:

All lessons plan are due each Monday for the upcoming week of instruction. Lesson plans must be placed in the assistant principal’s box by 8:00 a.m. All lesson plans must include HSCE Objective(s), Common Core Standards, Materials, Procedures, Evaluation, Word Wall assignment, and standardized testing. Lesson plans will be read by the principal and assistant principal.

One copy of each course syllabi is due to the principal by Monday, September 19, 2013. Each department is responsible for assigning students a major project. Teachers are reminded to follow the calendar of major projects.

∙ Emergency Sub Plans – 5 Days

Classroom Rules and Consequences:

Each teacher must have posted classroom rules and the consequences for violating those rules. There should be no more than 3 to 5 rules and their consequences that must include contacting the parent or guardian. Written documentation of parent contact and corrective discipline measures is required. Classroom rules should be enforced daily. Rules and their consequences should be reviewed daily at the beginning of each semester.

Classroom Routines and Procedures:

Classroom routines and procedures are the foundation of classroom management.Classroom routines and procedures will guide the behavior of students by alertingthem to all of the managerial processes and how those processes are to be carriedout in your classroom. Routines would be doing the same activity at the sametime during a class period, for example: Each day students enter the classroomtake their seats and begin their “Do Now”, or 7 minutes prior to the end of the period students secure all of their belonging and participate in the closure of thatdays lesson. Procedures should be how specific activities are to be carried out, forexample: Procedures in how to turn in homework, how to make a request, what todo if you are late, how to throw away trash, etc.

Student Code of Conduct Referral Procedures:

All students are expected to adhere to classroom, school, and district rules.Students who choose to violate rules will receive consequences that parallel the infraction. Serious or continual infractions of classroom, school, or the StudentCode of Conduct must be reported to the administration via a referral form. Forms must be forwarded to the Assistant Principal’s office within 24 hours ofthe infraction. In a classroom situation, make sure the section requiring the teacher to make an effort to correct the behavior is completed. Once a student is sent to the administration, the administration will determine the consequence for the student. Teachers are reminded that you are the most important person when it comes to the discipline in your classroom. If you allow the administration to control the students behavior in your room, students will see you as WEAK and unable to control your own classroom, this in unacceptable.

Extracurricular Clubs and After School Academic Assistance:

All members of the CMA instructional staff are required to sponsor a club thatmeets after school once per week. All instructional staff members are also required to be available at least 25 minutes after school to offer academic assistance to students. Students whom you know need assistance, make itmandatory that the student come back to see you.

First Hour Attendance:

Teachers, take attendance within the first 10 minutes of the class period. Students will not be allowed to enter their first hour class after 8:15 a.m. Any student arriving to your class after 8:15a.m., must be sent to the College Counseling Center.

Staff Absence Procedures

Starting this year, all staff members who are absent must report their absence to the school and the district’s Sub Finder System.

To report an absence to the school, please call 651-3299. Please state your name, department, and the reason for your absence. This call must be made by 6:45 a.m. of the day you are going to be absent. The day before returning to work, staff members must call the school prior 2:00 p.m. It is always helpful if staff members report absences as early as possible.

Failure to call in (make contact with administration) may result in your time being recorded as 07 (absent without pay). Text messages will not ensure confirmation of a reported absence.

To report an absence on the Sub Finder System (this is mandatory), please go on-line to Sub Finder or call 566-0800 and follow the prompts. In order to successfully complete the Sub Finder process you must know the following.

All Communication and Media Arts High School students must report on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at 7:45 a.m. to the below listed registration rooms. Students who do not register on September 3rd may lose their place at CMA. Students are to enter at the South St. Mary’s Street door beginning at 7:40 a.m.

Students should report directly to their registration room to receive their individual schedules. They will be required to complete family data cards, so they should be prepared with work telephone numbers and a writing instrument.

After the registration and orientation period, students will be given the opportunity to select their lockers for the school year. All students must share a locker with another student. Students must bring a combination lock to reserve a locker.

**Since your child is now at the threshold of adulthood, we strongly encourage you not to accompany him/her on September 3rd. Since this is a full day, please see that your child has a lunch and transportation at dismissal time.0

Staff Meetings & Professional Development 2013-2014

All DFT Staff members are expected to attend weekly Wednesday staff meetings. Please expect to be in attendance for the entire two-hour duration of the staff meetings. The second half of the weekly meeting will consist of a one (1) hour professional development component that can be utilized; but not limited to, the following:

Teacher’s Preparation Period

Instructional Staff will be required to utilize teacher preparation time for content level and grade-level planning. Administration will give advanced notice of these prep planning sessions. Teachers are expected to be on time during this planning session and are permitted to eat during this session.

All Do Nows must be actual ACT/MME released items or practice questions. The Do Now ACT/MME question must be clearly labeled ACT/MME test question #:_____ and Date:_____.

Teachers are expected to review Do Nows daily and check for mastery of the concept.

DATA WALLSAll Instructional and Counseling Staff are required to keep a visible display of student data. Please adhere to the following guidelines:

1. Must be a large display that is easily viewed from various classroom locations.

2. At least three forms of Academic data must be posted, i.e. Homework average, Student or class assessments,NWEA MAP Results,Pre-Test,Overall grade averages.

3. Must be current and updated every 3-4 weeks.

Data Walls are the responsibility of the teacher. Administration will offer guidance regarding resources for the Data Wall. *All students must be able to interpret their own academic data; i.e. R.I.T. score, PLAN score.
