a much more conscious effort to comprehend what is heard.

Meaning of ListeningListening is with the mind.Hearing is with the senses.Listening is an active process of

eliciting information, ideas, attitudes and emotions.

Listening is an interpersonal and oral exchange

Types of Listening There are many types of listening.

They may be categorized as follows:1. Casual Listening2. Intentional Listening3. Active Listening4. Passive Listening5. Empathetic Listening6. Critical Listening7. Appreciative Listening8. Ignoring

1. Casual ListeningListening to someone without

much focus or intention, is called casual listening.

This process doesn’t serve any specific purpose.

2. Intentional ListeningListening with intention and

focus, and in a symmetric way, is called intentional listening.

It serves specific purpose.

3. Active ListeningAttentive listening with careful

consideration and concentration becomes active listening.

The listener responds verbally and/or non-verbally during the listening process.

4. Passive ListeningListening without responding to

the speaker is known as passive listening.

Since there is no feedback from the listener, the speaker may be in doubt about the effect of the message.

5. Empathetic ListeningListening with care and regard to

give advice, or to solve problems is empathetic listening.

For example, a psychiatrist listens to his/her patients empathetically to suggest solutions.

6. Critical ListeningListening to solve problems, to

think of a solution , to suggest options etc. requires critical listening.

7. Appreciative ListeningListening to something with a

positive attitude in order to appreciate something, such as a music performance, is called appreciative listening.

8. IgnoringPretending to listen to someone

without grasping the message of the speaker is another way of ignoring someone.

This kind of listening is also called pretentive listening.

There may be other types of listening like selective listening, biased listening, etc.
