    COMMUNICATION SKILLS FOR INTERACTION WITH STUDENTS

    Teachers who have good communication skills are able to enhance the teaching andlearning process. Among the communication skills that a teacher must possess sothat they can interact appropriately with students are:

    i) Verbal Skills for Motiatio!: In a class, students often have different kinds ofpreferences over the subjects taught. It is the responsibility of the teacher to createenthusiasm and enhance students interest towards a subject. Teachers should helpto remove any fear and inhibition that a student may have towards the subject.Through good verbal skills, teachers are able to convince and motivate studentsfrom different cultural background towards the subject. In addition, by employingappropriate teaching and learning approaches, teachers can instill and sustainstudents interests in the subject.

    ii) Effe"tie #o$% La!&'a&e: This is a powerful communication skill that a

    teacher must possess especially when dealing with students from diverse culturalbackground. ood presentation skills include a powerful body language supportedby verbal skills. This can create a long lasting impression in the minds of thestudents. Teachers must be sensitive towards the different cultural norms ofstudents by communicating appropriately with the students and avoiding sensitivegestures among different cultural groups.

    iii) Se!se of H'(o'r: A good sense of humour keeps students active andinterested in class. A teacher who is boring and lacks humour does not contribute tothe overall well!being of the students. Teachers who use humour appropriatelycreate a fun and motivating learning atmosphere. "owever, teachers must be awareof the sensitive elements in different cultural practices so that they do not provoke orhurt students feelings when using humour in their communication with students. #ore$ample, teachers should not make jokes out of cultural norms and values ofstudents. This would cause embarassment and resentment on the students.

    i) A"tie Liste!i!&: Teachers should encourage students to communicate openlyand cultivate a dialogue rather than making a one!way communication. Throughlistening to different view points of students, teachers would be able to understand

    and assess better any situation. #or e$ample, in solving a problem in the classroom,especially when it relates to cultural practices, it is always wise to hear the opinionsof students from different cultural background before making a suggestion anddecision on how to solve the problem.

    ) Te"!i"al Skills* Teachers should be up!to!date with the latest technology forcommunication so that they can reach out to students in a more efficient manner.#or students with Internet access at home and in school, teachers can communicatewith students through email, learning portals, video conferencing, class #acebookaccount, et cetera. Through the use of efficient information and communicationtechnology, teachers are able to communicate effectively with todays generation of

    techno!savvy students from diverse cultural background to keep up their interest inthe learning process.
