Health: Mental and physical state of a person –without disease

Wellness: Active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life.

What is Health Literacy? Health Literacy is Dependent

Health Literacy

Affects the Ability to:

• Navigate the healthcare system

• Share personal information

• Engage in self-care & chronic-disease management

• Understand mathematical concepts

Health Literacy: The degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information & services needed to make appropriate health decisions.

Why is Health Literacy Important? According to the National Assessment of Adult Literacy, Only 12% of adults have Proficient health literacy skills.

9 out of 10 adults may lack the skills needed to manage their health and

prevent disease.

Adults with Below Basic health literacy are more likely to report their health as poor (~42 percent) and are more likely to lack health insurance (~28 percent) than adults with Proficient

health literacy.

Fourteen percent of adults (~30 million people) have Below Basic health

literacy skills.

Poor literacy skills are associated with a higher risk

of hospital admission.
