Computer science orcomputing science (abbreviated CS orCompSci) is thescientificandmathematicalapproach to
computation, and specifically to the design of computing machines and processes. Acomputer scientistis ascientistwho
specialises in the theory of computation and the design of computers.[1]
Its subfields can be divided into practical techniques for its implementation and application incomputer systemsand purely
theoretical areas. Some, such ascomputational complexity theory, which studies fundamental properties ofcomputational
problems, are highly abstract, while others, such ascomputer graphics, emphasize real-world applications. Still others focus on
the challenges in implementing computations. For example, programming language theorystudies approaches to description of
computations, while the study ofcomputer programmingitself investigates various aspects of the use ofprogramming
languagesandcomplex systems, andhuman-computer interactionfocuses on the challenges in making computers and
computations useful, usable, anduniversally accessibletohumans.
Communication within CSE
Mailboxes
Each student in the School of Engineering and Applied Science has a personal
mailbox. Undergraduate mailboxes for the Department of Computer Science are
located across from the elevator on the second floor of the Moore Building. Thesemailboxes are our principal means of communicating with students, and students
should get into the habit of checking their mailboxes on a regular basis.
Eniac Accounts
All CSE students automatically receive computer accounts on the ENIAC. With
these accounts, students gain access to electronic mailing services and bulletin
boards. Using electronic mail, students can send and receive messages to fellow
students, faculty and staff across the university as well as to people at other
institutions.Electronic mail is a powerful and important tool, and is probably the
most effective means of communication within the CSE department! It is the best
way to get in touch with a professor to set up an appointment or to ask a quick
question. Professors will also frequently use it to distribute class notes and grades.
Students can use it for chatting with friends from around the world, or getting
answers to questions that cannot be answered locally.
The ENIAC is maintained by CETS (Computing and Educational Technology
Services). A seminar on how to use the ENIAC is typically offered by CETS
during the first week of classes in the Fall semester. We strongly encourage

students to learn how to use the ENIAC as soon as possible. Questions concerning
this seminar or any accounts should be directed to the CETS office.
Electronic Bulletin Boards
Various electronic bulletin boards have been established to allow circulation of a
variety of postings, announcements and messages by subscribers. Most CSE
courses have bulletin boards associated with them, as well as the Dining
Philosophers, the undergraduate computer science student organization. See CETS
for further details in regard to electronic bulletin boards.
